- Scope and Content
- Item consists of part two in a two part video series "A Taste of History" created by Debbie Liang and Joty Gill, University of British Columbia alumni and graduates from the Asian Canadian & Asian Migration Studies program (ACAM). Part two is titled "A Pig's Tale". The film highlights the history of Chinese pig farms also known as "Piggeries" in Burnaby. The film tells the story of how many of these farms were established by Chinese immigrants along Douglas Road (now Canada Way) between the 1890s and 1920s; the importance of the pig in the Chinese Culture as well as a way for Chinese immigrants to make a living and the racism and discriminatory bylaws that the Chinese pig farmers suffered that finally led to the closure of many of these farms. Content references three documented piggery ranches along Douglas Road: Ah Sam; Young Chung and Hop Hin Yen. The films are supported with voice over in english, subtitles, animation along with historical photographs. One version of the film is supported with subtitles in English while two other versions of the film are supported with subtitles in Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.

- In 2020, due to the restrictions of COVID-19, University of British Columbia student interns with the Burnaby Village Museum Chinese Canadian History in Burnaby project were asked to create virtual experiences to reimagine Burnaby Village Museum's historical Chinese Canadian programming in remote online spaces. Debbie Liang and Joty Gill (UBC alumni and graduates of Dr. Henry Yu's 2019 summer ACAM 390A Global Seminar to Aisa) returned to work with Burnaby Village Museum to create two short films showcasing the history of Chinese Canadian Chop Suey restaurants and piggeries in Burnaby.

The podcasts were created by students Rose Wu and Wei Yan Yeong from the Facutly of Land and Food Systems at the University of British Columbia Faculty and while student interns at Burnaby Village Museum. - Cylindrical veneer mushroom spawning barrel. The wood has been shaped to make the barrel. There is a base and rim around the top and bottom of the barrel, stapled to hold it together. There are a number of stains, discolourations, ink, and evidence of past mold. There is also a lid with a metal ring afixed to it. - The plate is to commemorate the Fraser Valley Milk Producers Assocation Burnaby Plant sod turning ceremony on July 26, 1962, when construction started on the new facility at Sperling and Lougheed. The plant opened in 1964, and housed the FVMPA head offices, fluid milk plant, and ice cream manufacturing division.

- Podmore's Ice Cream - Advertisement -- [1912]. Advertising fan for Podmore's Ice Cream in Edmonton. One side of the fan states "Podmore's Ice Cream/ Slips On The Plate/ All Flavors and Bricks/ Edmonton". On the other side is an illustration of a woman in a green winter coat and hat holding a branch of holly in one hand and a snow ball in the other. The illustration is titled "212 - Aiming High" and was produced by The American Art Works in Coshocton, Ohio in 1912. The bottom of the fan has a spot where a handle would be attached. The fan measures 22cm x 23cm.

- Grocery sign The sign is from a neighbourhood grocery on Royal Oak at the Skytrain line: 6949 Royal Oak Avenue. The bulk of the sign is rectangular with a grocery bag and contents extending above the top edge of the sign. The words "M & B / GROCERY" are written in white text, with "GROCERY" highlighted in neon. The sign was suspended from a horizontal pole with a spear like finial that was mounted at the front of the roof or the store.

- Eagle Ford neon sign. It is a large double-sided hollow sheet metal sign measuring 13.3 feet tall and 8.9 feet wide. The sheet metal and structure of the sign retains most of the eagle's original painted image, including the dramatic wings with their blue and white feather pattern.
- Object History
- Eagle Motors Limited was established by the well-known Burnaby businessman Frank McCracken at 4161 Hastings Street in 1948. The car dealership became a successful local Heights business and was the largest Ford car and truck retailer in the province during its operation. The company had adopted the silhouette of the classic Bald Eagle in full flight to serve as a logo which was utilized in advertising and promotional materials. The eagle symbol was famously developed into a classic chrome badge with the name "Eagle Ford - Burnaby, BC" that was installed on all the Eagle Ford cars and trucks sold by the dealership. After a new showroom building was constructed on the site in 1950, the company commissioned Neon Products of Vancouver to manufacture a very large double-sided neon eagle. Typical of neon signs of the era, the eagle was painted with dramatic designs and bright primary colours on metal with blue, white, and gold neon tubing serving to highlight the outline of the eagle.
- The "Burnaby Eagle" sign immediately became a landmark on the Burnaby Heights business district. From its high perch atop the dealership building, located at Carleton Street, the Burnaby Eagle shared the night sky with other nearby classic neon signs of the era including the "Swinging Girl" sign of the Helen's Children's Wear store. Eagle Motors was a successful dealership until the recession of the 1980s, and in 1985 the business was closed. Vandalism on the site resulted in damage to the neon tubing of the sign before the leased sign was reclaimed by its owner, Neon Products Limited. The sign was obtained by a local collector, who carefully looked after it for 25 years. In 2012, the sign was sold to the City of Burnaby.
- The sign will be restored and installed near its original location on Hastings Street in 2024.

- Object History
- The plaque commemorates the history of the British Columbia Electric Railway in Burnaby, and the preservation of tram #1223 by the Burnaby Historical Society in 1958. Interurban tram No. 1223 has been restored by the joint efforts of the Friends of 1223 and Burnaby Village Museum. In March 2007 the tram was officially returned to Burnaby Village Museum and is currently on display, in a replica of a Tram Car Barn, at the Museum.

- Annie D. Basiuk (later Yanko) was born on February 25, 1902 in Sheho, Saskatchewan (formerly Sheho, North West Territories). Daniel "Dan" Yanko was born in Kobilnicha, Ukraine in 1887 and immigrated to Canada in May or June of 1905. Daniel Yanko married Annie D. Basiuk and had thirteen children together. Their son, John Ivan Yanko was born on the family farm, near Kelliher, Saskatchewan, on June 27, 1923. In grade six, John was pulled out of school to help support the family. Eugenia “Jenny” Haresomovych (later Carman) was born August 8, 1904 in Galecia, Austria. She came to Canada in 1928, when her parents sent her to live with the Austrian consular in Halifax. A year later, she was in The Pas with Albert Edward Carman, with whom she would have three children. Their daughter, Leida Doria "Lillian Doris" Carman was born in The Pas, Manitoba March 24, 1929. Eugenia “Jenny” (Haresomovych) Carman later re-married Joseph Nagy who was born in Hungary in October 3, 1900. Jenny, Joseph and the children moved to Nelson, British Columbia, where Joseph worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway. At the age of twenty, John Yanko met his future wife Lillian Doris Carman while visiting relatives in Burnaby. Lillian received a rail pass because of her dad’s employment with the CPR and at fourteen had gone to visit her Godmother in Burnaby. John Ivan Yanko and Leida Doria "Lillian Doris" Carman were married October 16, 1948 in Nelson, British Columbia and moved into the basement of John’s sister’s house on Union Street. Lillian began working at the downtown Woodward’s store as a cashier in 1948. In 1950, the young couple bought property at 7385 (later renumbered 7391) Broadway in Burnaby and began constructing a house as they could afford it. Knowing she’d be let go if she was pregnant, when Lillian was expecting her first child, Jenny sewed her several versions of the same outfit; they all used the same material, but each was a little bit larger than the last to accommodate her expanding girth. Rhonda, born in 1953 and Charmaine, born in 1955, grew up in the Broadway home. They attended school at Sperling Elementary, and later at Burnaby North high school. Lillian left her job to be a stay-at-home mom when Rhonda was born, but that changed in 1963 when John and Charmaine were in a car accident that left John temporarily unable to work. Joseph Nagy died April 20, 1962; his wife Eugenia “Jenny” (Haresomovych) (Carman) Nagy passed away August 14, 1985. Daniel "Dan" Yanko died in 1976; his wife Annie D. (Basiuk) Yanko died in 1997. John Yanko later returned to work, establishing his own tile setting business and working until age eighty-two. John and Lillian lived out the rest of their married lives on the Broadway property. John Ivan Yanko passed away in 2010; his wife Leida Doria "Lillian Doris" Carman (Carman) Yanko passed away in 2011.

- Large plastic sign with internal backlighting for advertising. The sign has two sections for ad inserts and one section for price display.
- The price display is currently set up advertising the price of packs and cartons of cigarettes
- The first bank of prices are 3 digit with small windows that reveal the number on a roller behind. The second bank of prices are 4 digits.
- The sign was made by CDA Industries in Scarborough, Ontario and is stamped with "JULY 1986"
- There are three labels at the top of the sign including information about how to replace the lamps or reinsert unrolled numbers.
- There is a hole at the top of the sign for the electrical cord to come out.
- There are two white metal brackets attached to the ends of the sign and there is a rusted chain hanging from each bracket.
- The plastic at the bottom right corner on the back is broken and damaged.

- Item was used in the Canada Way Food Market owned by Harry Toy between 1975 and the late 2000s. the building sat vacant until sold in 2023.

- Wooden sandwich board advertising Dairyland products. The board consists of two wooden panels that were attached at the top with a piano hinge. The hinge is currently only attached to one panel. The wooden panels are painted white. The paint is chipping in many areas.
- Both panels feature the same information and have an large illustration of a cow's head an front body on the bottom left.
- The two panels are held together on the back with a rusty metal chain.
- Handwritten on the back of one of the panels is "Canada Way Food Market"

- Promitional tape measurer with a silver top plates and a gold body engraved on both sides. One side dark blue with ariel drawing of building and "Dairyland/ BURNABY PLANT/ 1964" engraved. Reverse is oval image of 4 cows in a field with mountains, sky, and a barn painted on a gold body with "FRASER VALLEY/ MILK PRODUCERS/ ASSOCIATION" in red. Top has a retractable silver steel tape with measurements in inches on one side. "Japan" engraved on base.
- Object History
- This object belonged to a sales representative for Dairyland, who lived in Chilliwack. He retired in 1978 after 40 years with the company. The Burnaby Dairyland plant was constructed in 1964 on Lougheed Highway near Sperling Avenue.

- "Mel-Ray" Meat Market - Thermometer. Promotional wall thermometer for "Mel-Ray" Meat Market with a glass thermometer and a cardboard backing. The thermometer has a picture of two cottages on a lake side. Below the thermometer is the name of the company, the phone number and the address which is "4008 East Hastings St. North Burnaby, B.C.". The thermometer is 14cm x 24cm.

- Wooden frame around two rectangular shaped windows with a wooden separation bar. The frame and windows are both dark (brown/black). The wooden frame appears to be composed of mahogony. The windows are composed of a glass-like material yet do not appear to be ordinary glass. One side of the windows has a scallop shell pattern and the other side is plain. Two holes are drilled through the edges of the frame at the midpoint. Length: 114 cm Width: 25 cm Thickness: 2.1 cm
