Heritage Value
This home was built by Captain William J. Eyres. In 1912, it was reported in The British Columbian: “Captain Eyres of Seattle is remodelling the front of his house on Douglas Road and otherwise improving it.” The house was later sold to William A. Mawhinney, who subsequently built houses at 6011 Buckingham Avenue and 7616 Burris Avenue. This spacious, high-quality Craftsman bungalow remains in excellent condition. It features a cross-gabled roof with multiple half-timbered front gables with large exposed purlins, in contrast to the shingle cladding on the rest of the house. At the front corner is a glazed sun-room. The entrance porch features tripled square columns. The property still has a beautiful garden, but once included large vegetable gardens, an orchard, and a large chicken house.

Heritage Value
Danish builder Hans Jorgensen Hau (1878-1944) and his wife Anna (née Sorenson, 1874-1956), constructed this highly-distinctive Tudor Revival residence circa 1935. This was a time of entrenched traditionalism, and most domestic architecture reflected period revival styles. Tudor elements have been compressed here into a cottage form, including a distinctive front façade with half timbering and brick noggin; on the sides the nogging is rock-dash stucco. Casement windows contribute to the cottage appearance. The rear façade is clad with more utilitarian shingles. A prominent brick chimney exhibits angled and corbelled brickwork. Hau worked as a bricklayer and stonemason, and this house has common elements with the Moore Residence at 5165 Sperling Avenue, which Hau designed and constructed in 1943.

The Douglas-Gilpin Neighbourhood developed into a diverse area incorporating residential, business, educational and park districts in the period after 1955. The BCIT site was built in the early 1960s, shortly after the Burnaby Municipal Hall was located on Canada Way near Deer Lake in 1956. The construction of the Municipal Hall at this location fostered the creation of an administrative and business centre adjacent to the park, while the northern and central areas of the neighbourhood retained their primarily residential character.

In the 1980 "Residential Neighbourhood Environment Study," the Morley-Buckingham Neighbourhood is described as "perhaps Burnaby's most prestigious residential area. The lots are larger than most other areas of the Municipality and this, along with the new expensive housing developed over the past 10 years, has created a very desirable residential neighbourhood...The older area of Buckingham lies at the lower edge of the slope and here the homes and streets are more uniform and aged between 20 and 25 years old...to the east of Canada Way lies...a cluster townhouse development."

Description
Dress with bolero jacket, c. 1930s. Black cotton lace with black silk chiffon slip. Sleeveless, low draped back, ankle length slightly flared at the bottom. Long sleeved lace bolero with metal brooch clasp. The dress has a round neckline in front that drapes into a deep V in the back. There is a magnet at the centre front of the neckline to hold up the metal clasp of the bolero. The bodice attaches at a fairly high waistline. At the front of the skirt, there is are two triangular sections that make up the top section; on the back, there is one triangular piece cut into the top section of the skirt. The rest of it is cut as a front and back section, with a slight flare at the bottom. The slip is cut differently, and may not be the original that went with the dress since it lacks the corresponding shoulder snaps. Each shoulder strap has five rows of smocking on the top. They meet at a triangle shape with gathering under the breasts, and at the back at the waistline in the same way as the dress. The skirt hangs in six gores which also flare out somewhat at the bottom. It is somewhat longer than the dress, visible at the bottom for several inches. The seams are unfinished. The bolero is long sleeved, gathered to cuffs at the wrist, with purposeful large holes at each underarm. It has two darts at the bottom back, and a triangular shape hangs down from the centre back neckline. The front angles down to points from each shoulder, where there is a silver metal brooch clasp with clear rhinestones. It is held up with the magnet in the dress, which gives the bolero front a draped affect.
Object History
This dress belonged to Mrs.Myra Mitchell, who lived in a senior's cottage housing complex located S.W. area off Canada Way and Edmonds. She passed away c.1961.

honour roll

Description
Roll of Honor [sic]; 1916; Burnaby; large wooden tripartate frame with typed lists of names in each panel; left list "Burnaby Roll of Honour / Dec. 1915"; centre list "Dec. 1915 May 1916"; right list "May 1916"; watercolour images of war at top of each list; "The Great War" on brass plaque bottom centre.
Object History
Honour rolls that recognize individuals that serve in the time of war have been used by communities throughout Canada and the Commonwealth as a traditional act of remembrance. These memorials consist of a list of veterans that is compiled to ensure that names of all service men and women are included, with their rank and service acknowledged. The "Heroic Dead" have been traditionally marked on Canadian honour rolls with the addition of a cross and/or maple leaf beside the honoured name. Typically this sombre memorial is crafted in traditional style using calligraphy for the names listed on the "tablets" and native woods and brass for the frame materials. Burnaby has a proud history of men and women who served by volunteering for active service. The community honoured its war heroes during World War I with an impressive Honour Roll crafted by civic staff and dedicated at the former Municipal Hall at Edmonds on July 14, 1916. The intention of this memorial was to "keep the record bright before the people of the municipality". At the conclusion of this war over 1,200 names of service men and women were listed including over 90 "Heroic Dead" who paid the "ultimate sacrifice". The Burnaby Honour Roll remained as an important civic memorial on public display in the old municipal hall and was the focus of many annual Remembrance Day services. It consisted of a wooden frame with three paper "rolls." The Honour Roll unit was removed from the old municipal hall in 1956 when municipal council chambers and offices were relocated to the 4949 Canada Way hall site. It languished in storage and obscurity for decades until being "rediscovered" by a city works crew in 1993 and relocated to Burnaby Village Museum. It was professionally conserved by museum staff and in 2004 was placed in secure storage at the Museum. In 2005, the Heritage Commission approved a project that would provide a World War II Honour Roll to compliment the first one from 1916. The Government of Canada declared 2005 the "Year of the Veteran" so the City decided to create the new World War II honour roll by November 11, 2005 (Accession number X2834). It was determined that no complete Honour Roll of Burnaby's contribution to World War II yet existed. The research and creatin was completed so that both honour rolls could be displayed in City Hall in 2005. The intention was set that both honour rolls would be stored at the Museum and exhibited at City Hall during the month of November as part of the City's commemoration.

Description
Oval shaped coiled cedar root basket with cedar slat foundation. Overcast rim with remnants of a loopwork border. Decorated with vertical stripes of imbricated designs in canary grass and black dyed cherry bark. Cherry bark can be distinguished by the small eyes in the surface of the bark. If the basket maker is skilled the bark has a shiny appearance, if it has not been scraped properly it has a greyish tinge. Canary grass is differentiated from cattail and bear grass by its shiny appearance according to a Stó:lō/Stl’atl’imx elder and basket maker from Mount Currie, who was married into Upper Sḵwx̱wú7mesh.
