The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts opened in 1995. The Shadbolt Centre was named after two Burnaby residents who dedicated a lifetime of support and cultivation of the arts locally, nationally and internationally. Doris and Jack Shadbolt resided in Burnaby for over 50 years until Jack's death in November 1998. Doris Shadbolt spent her life's work bringing the artist and the audience closer together through her writing and curatorial work. Jack Shadbolt was an internationally recognized Canadian painter. He was also an author and both received many awards including the Order of Canada. In keeping with the Shadbolts' generosity the arts, Jack Shadbolt donated two of his paintings to the Centre for permanent display.

Description
The J.D. Shearer House is a one and one-half storey British Arts and Crafts-style house distinguished by its picturesque roofline, half-timbered rough-cast stucco cladding on the upper floor and battered window casings. It is located on the south side of Buckingham Avenue at Haszard Street in Burnaby's Deer Lake neighbourhood.
Heritage Value
Built in 1912, the J.D. Shearer House is an excellent example of the high quality residences constructed in the British Arts and Crafts style by affluent citizens in Burnaby's Deer Lake neighbourhood, promoted at the time as the equivalent of the prestigious Shaughnessy Heights development in Vancouver. The site of this house was part of Louis Claude Hill's Buckingham Estate subdivision. Development of these Edwardian era neighbourhoods in Burnaby was facilitated by the B.C. Electric Railway interurban line. In addition, the increasing availability of automobiles to the well-to-do families of the era sped up the process of urbanization in the outlying areas of Vancouver. Built for retired English military officer John D. Shearer and his wife, Katherine, the British Arts and Crafts design of the house represents associations with the Mother Country and the displays of patriotic loyalty considered desirable characteristics at the time. The picturesque charm and character of rural England is evoked in harmony with its woodland setting.
Defining Elements
Key elements that define the heritage character of the J.D. Shearer House include its: - location in the Buckingham Estate subdivision in the Deer Lake neighbourhood - residential form, scale and massing as exemplified by its one and one-half storey plus basement height, asymmetrical plan, front bay window and picturesque roofline - British Arts and Crafts details such as the half-timbering and rough-cast stucco on the upper storey, battered window casings, external clinker brick chimney on the east facade, deep overhanging closed eaves and bargeboards with distinctive lower returns - side gabled roof with gabled and shed dormers, clad in cedar - raised central entrance porch - irregular fenestration, including multi-paned transoms over casement windows - two internal red brick chimneys

History
The Burnaby Arts Council was formed in the early 1960s and was comprised of representatives from six existing arts organizations: the Burnaby Writer's Society, the Burnaby Historical Society, the Burnaby Art Gallery, the Burnaby Players, the Burnaby Civic Opera and a dance group. The Council was initially called the Fine Arts Council and its first mandate was to see the Art Gallery move from its location in the basement of the Burnaby Kingsway Library into premises of its own. Sheila Kincaid was a driving force behind this venture and when the Gallery was successfully relocated, she became the first director of the Burnaby Art Gallery in its present location in Ceperley House. During the 1967 Centennial Year, one of the Municipal projects for the Centennial was the dedication of the land at Deer Lake Park for an Arts Centre. At this time, the Fine Arts Council changed its name to the Burnaby Arts Council and the group focused its energies on securing funding for needed renovations and staffing for the Gallery and Arts Centre. That year, all the groups in the Council donated their share of the Provincial Cultural Grants toward outfitting the James Cowan Theatre. 1967 also saw a big Festival of the Arts produced to raise the public's awareness of the Arts Centre. During the late 1960s, the Council worked to get registered Society status and by 1976, it was fully incorporated. Throughout the years, the Burnaby Arts Council has supported and sponsored the arts and arts programs in Burnaby. Events such as the Burnaby Craft Market, the Burnaby Summer Theatre, the Christmas Craft Fair, and various concert series, studio tours, exhibitions and displays have been presented by the Council and it continues to be an active and driving force behind the celebration of arts and culture in Burnaby.
