History
Josephine Hong was born to Sui Ha Hong and Chan Kow Hong. The Hong Family had seven children, oldest to youngest: Pauline, Josephine, Catherine, Norine, Gary, Darlene, and Marlene.
The family runs Hop-On Farm on Marine Drive in Burnaby. Many Hong family members worked on the farm including Josephine Hong's grandfather, Gay Tim Hong, and uncles. Her great-grandfather was Sui Wing Hong

Object History
Postcard from the Golden Dragon Resturant which served Chinese-Canadian food. Their grand opening was September 2, 1950. The community staple was known for its neon dragon sign that advertised “Chop Suey”. One side of the kitchen served Chinese foods, while another served Canadian dishes. Chinese cuisine such as rice would be served with chopsticks, while steaks, a more western dish, would be served with knife and fork. Advertisements from the resturant and meeting notices were found in local newspapers from 1950 to 1957. The establishment was not listed in the 1966 Great Vancouver Cross-Cross Directory.

There are two versions of the book: English and Simplified Chinese (left, below) and the other in English and Traditional Chinese (right, below).
From the late 1800s to the present day, Chinese Canadians have made Burnaby into a more vibrant and livable city. Rooted: Chinese Canadian Stories in Burnaby brings together a collection of diverse stories and photographs from the community, celebrating the legacy and contributions of Burnaby’s Chinese Canadian community spanning over a century. This coffee-table book features oral histories and interviews with descendants of multigenerational family farms, green grocers, corner stores, restaurants, and places of worship. Also included are archival research and community perspectives on anti-Asian racism, community activism, courage, and resilience.
The publication has been timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the introduction of the Chinese Exclusion Act by the Government of Canada in 1923. This federal legislation followed decades of discriminatory legislation by Canada’s federal, provincial and municipal governments that targeted Chinese Canadians by limiting opportunities to live, work and raise families in Canada. The Chinese Exclusion Act banned almost all migration from China and remained in place until 1947. Publishing this book in 2023 is an effort by the City of Burnaby to recognize the impact of discriminatory legislation on Chinese Canadians in our community, including discriminatory bylaws and practices implemented by Burnaby’s early municipal government.

Object History
Samovar from the Kwong Chai Tong Herbalist shop, located at 122 East Pender Street in Vancouver's Chinatown. The business was founded in ca. 1915 by Lim Butt. The business was later ran by his son, Lim Bong. The samovar was situated on the counter of the shop, filled with an herbal brew which customers could pour off and drink for a small sum of money.
The top portion is the resevoir for the Herbal tea. The lower portion is where the fire was in order to keep the tea warm. Vessel was used to store herbal tea which was offered to visitors for maintaining the balance of their body.
Shen Nong is a deity in Chinese religion, a mythical sage ruler of prehistoric China; he has been thought to have taught the ancient Chinese not only their practices of agriculture, but also use of herbal drugs. “Shennong” can also be taken to refer to his people, the Shennong-shi (Shennong Clan). According to legend, tea was first discovered by Shennong over two thousand years ago.
It is written in Classic of Tea that, "The tea drinking tradition began with Shen Nong and actively developed by the Duke of Zhou." Tea was used in ancient China. It is said that Shen Nong, the God of Medicine who tasted all herbs was poisoned by 72 different plants everyday. He relied on tea to neutralise the toxins. As for how he discovered this plant which can treat all sorts of ailments, there are many different versions.
Label contains 3 Chinese characters that are translate to: Shen Nong Cha (the God of Medicine’s tea).
Product is a medicinal tea brand name which uses more than 10 types of herbs to make the tea. Consumed to relieve symptoms of a cold. Often consumed during the summer months to help someone stay cool.

Scope and Content
Item consists of part one in a two part video series "A Taste of History" created by Debbie Liang and Joty Gill, University of British Columbia alumni and graduates from the Asian Canadian & Asian Migration Studies program (ACAM). Part one is titled "Scraps and Dragons". The film provides background information on the origins of the Chinese-Canadian culinary dish "chop suey" and tells the story of Chinese Canadian Chop Suey restaurants, highlighting the history of the "Dragon Inn" chop suey restaurant owned by Larry Lee. The film is supported with voice over in english, subtitles, animation, historical and family photographs and interviews with family members, Kathy Lee and Eleanor Lee. One version of the film is supported with subtitles in English while two other versions of the film are supported with subtitles in Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.
History
In 2020, due to the restrictions of COVID-19, University of British Columbia student interns with the Burnaby Village Museum Chinese Canadian History in Burnaby project were asked to create virtual experiences to reimagine Burnaby Village Museum's historical Chinese Canadian programming in remote online spaces. Debbie Liang and Joty Gill (UBC alumni and graduates of Dr. Henry Yu's 2019 summer ACAM 390A Global Seminar to Aisa) returned to work with Burnaby Village Museum to create two short films showcasing the history of Chinese Canadian Chop Suey restaurants and piggeries in Burnaby.
Larry Lee was born in Kaiping, Guangdong, China and immigrated to Canada in 1949 at the age of sixteen to reunite with his father, Lee Soon. Larry Lee's father had been in Canada for years before his son immigrated to join him. Larry attended Vancouver Technical Secondary School and learned English and carpentry. After he graduated, he was hired by Mr. Wong. Larry and Mr. Wong operated an IGA grocery store at Lonsdale in North Vancouver. Following this, Larry worked as a cashier for his father at "Bamboo Terrace" Chinese restaurant in Vancouver's Chinatown. In 1958, he married his wife Kathy and one year later, in 1959 he started a new business of his own. Larry opened the "Dragon Inn" chop suey restaurant at 2516 Kingsway (at Slocan) in Vancouver. Once the restaurant was doing well, Larry opened the "Park Inn" at Kingsway and 25th Avenue. The "Park Inn" was the first Chinese food restaurant with a smorgasboard in Vancouver. With the success of these restaurants and subsequent restaurants Larry Lee opened three other "Dragon Inn" chop suey restaurants located at; 4510 Kingsway and Willingdon in Burnaby (1964); 250 Columbia Street in New Westminster (1971) and Hastings and Willingdon (1990s). In the 1990s Larry retained ownership of the Dragon Inn at 4510 Kingsway and Willingdon and sold the other restaurants. In 1996, Larry sold the property of the Dragon Inn and surrounding lots located at Kingsway and Willingdon to make way for the construction of Crystal Mall. Larry and Kathy Lee had eight children who all worked in the family run restaurants until they were sold.
