This church was one of the first built in North Burnaby to serve the new community of Vancouver Heights. Designed by architect Frank Barrs and constructed by local builders, Arthur England and Mr. Scott, it reflected the English roots of the Anglican Church with its fine Arts and Crafts style. It was officially opened in an impressive ceremony by the Bishop of New Westminster and could accommodate 200 worshippers. It was named after Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. The adjoining parish hall was completed in 1920. The church building features a gabled roof, triangular eave brackets and a semi-octagonal apse. Stucco has been applied to the exterior, but it retains its original form, scale and massing. It now houses the Burnaby Pacific Grace Church. English-born Frank Barrs (1871-1963) arrived in Vancouver in 1907 and established an office for about one year before he began working for the Vancouver Exhibition Association. He briefly established a partnership (1912-1913) with Samuel Shewbrooks (1877-1957), and was active as an architect until about 1933.

This small Edwardian-era bungalow home was built and owned by Burnaby resident Jane Sincock (1848-1940) and her husband Thomas Sincock (1844-1916) as an investment rental property. By 1916, the couple was living in New Westminster, on Bole Street, where Jane, who was born in Cornwall, remained until her death. This substantial bungalow is distinguished by its bellcast hipped roof and dormers, an octagonal corner bay, and a small front verandah supported by square tapered columns. The house retains its original lapped wooden siding though the windows have been replaced.

This house was built by Thomas Davis Coldicutt (1879-1970) and Margaret Jane Coldicutt, pre-eminent local citizens. Thomas Coldicutt was born in Birmingham and arrived in Canada in 1900, finding success in the steamboat industry. In 1902, he married Margaret Jane Styler who had been born in Redditch, Worcester, England, and in 1908 they settled in East Burnaby–some of the first pioneers to the area–and established a fruit farm. Thomas had a successful real estate, insurance and brokerage business, and was elected as a councillor for East Burnaby in 1909. He was also active in civic, political and social circles in Burnaby and became president of the Burnaby Board of Trade. "East Burnaby is booming and the signs of prosperity that may be seen on every hand. Most of these are substantial dwellings, such as effect a permanent improvement to the countryside. Among those whose homes have been completed, or on the point of completion may be mentioned. Councillor Coldicutt, who has built himself a habitation on Second Avenue at a cost of $4,000. (The British Columbian, 1911). In 1913, Coldicutt sold his original farm described as “the show place of Burnaby” to the Burnaby School Board for the development of Second Street School and this house was moved from Second Street and Sixteenth Avenue to this site. It has been extensively altered, but retains its original form, scale and massing.

One of the prominent buildings along Vancouver Height’s early commercial strip, this block has continuously served its original commercial/retail use, with apartments on the second floor. Alterations over the years have included a coat of stucco over the original lapped wooden siding, and the alteration of the roofline cornice. Notably, the building has retained its distinctive second storey bay windows and three ground floor commercial spaces with recessed entrances. It was financed and built by Arthur Wall, a director of Hill, Wall & Company Ltd. Real Estate, which was based in the Pacific Block in Vancouver.

This house was built by East Burnaby pioneers William Karman (1866-1948) and Rachael Karman (1865-1933), both born in Scotland. The Karmans originally farmed a “fruit ranch” on Cumberland Road in the 1890s but retired to this home after selling their former farm for a residential subdivision. Rachel died in 1933, and William was remarried to Mary Selkirk (1904-1981). In pristine condition, this Edwardian-era home has a front gabled roof, with symmetrical saddlebag dormers and a gabled front porch. Cedar shingle cladding is used at the foundation level and in the gable ends, and lapped wooden siding on the main level.

This modest, hipped roof, cottage-style bungalow is distinguished by a full width front verandah. It was built as part of the Buena Vista subdivision in about 1911 by the Leibly & Blumer Real Estate Company. It was reported in The British Columbian in 1911: “Ten houses are now being erected by the company on the property, solid substantial five or six-room buildings that appeals to the homeseeker”. Retaining a high degree of integrity, this residence displays its original double-hung windows and lapped wooden siding. Houses of this type were often constructed from a complete package of materials offered by building supply companies, and were extremely popular due to their low cost and ease of construction.

Description
The Vorce Station is a modest utilitarian passenger tram shelter, originally constructed at the foot of Nursery Street as part of the British Columbia Electric Railway Company’s Burnaby Lake Interurban Line. In 1953, it was moved to a local farm by the Lubbock family, and in 1977 it was relocated to Burnaby Village Museum. The wood-frame structure has a rectangular plan and hipped roof. It is enclosed on three sides, with an open side for access to the train platform and a single long built-in bench across the back of the station.
Heritage Value
The heritage value of the Vorce Station is as the last remaining interurban station in Burnaby and one of the few extant structures left in the Greater Vancouver region that were once part of the extensive British Columbia Electric Railway (BCER) interurban system. The Vorce Station was designed and built by the BCER, and is typical of the small local passenger stations on the Burnaby Lake and Chilliwack interurban lines. It was named after C.B. Vorce, the Chief Engineer for the company. The impact of the interurban line on local development was extremely significant, as it connected the cities of New Westminster and Vancouver, and enabled the residents of Burnaby to form a cohesive municipality from the mainly rural lands remaining between the two larger centres. Much of the early development in Burnaby was due to the growth of the interurban rail lines. The heritage significance for this station also lies in its interpretive value within the Burnaby Village Museum. The Vorce Station is an important cultural feature for the interpretation of Burnaby’s transportation history to the public, and is an important surviving feature of the BCER interurban system.
Defining Elements
The character defining features of the Vorce Station include its: - rectangular form and pyramidal roof with overhanging eaves - simple vernacular design and utilitarian nature - cedar shingle wall cladding - cedar shingle-clad roof with galvanized pressed tin roof ridges - interior vertical tongue-and-groove panelling - heritage graffiti: initials and messages carved and scrawled on the walls - identifying sign with large letters visible at a distance

North Burnaby's waterfront was the location of a unique squatter's community known as Crabtown. Although its origins are obscure, it is believed that the first shacks were built before 1912. When the depression of 1913-1917 began, the shacks became permanent homes for impoverished workers. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the community grew larger. Crabtown was not a slum, but a neighbourhood - the community even rallied together to build a water supply system and trails up the steep bluff with steps and banisters so children could go to school safely. In 1957, the National Harbours Board decided that Crabtown was encroaching on Federal property and evicted all 130 residents. Within a few months, residents were relocated and 114 homes were levelled.

After considering several sites in the Greater Vancouver area, the Shell Oil Company chose 70 acres in North Burnaby with frontage of one third of a mile on Burrard Inlet. Shell proposed to build a four-million dollar plant that would employ up to 2000 - providing some relief in the middle of Burnaby's economic crisis of the Depression years. The site became known as the Shellburn Refinery and was in operation until 1993.

In 1950, the Burnaby School Inspector reported: "the recent development of a number of large housing projects and the continuing growth of new homes in settled areas are compelling the Board to consider a building program of major proportions...now under construction, including McPherson Park with 21 classrooms." Enrolment in its first year was 686 students. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, junior high schools were replaced with expanded secondary schools encompassing grades 7 through 12; as a result, McPherson Park Junior High was closed and Burnaby South Secondary School opened.

The south-east corner of Burnaby featured homes that were scattered in a rural setting. Previously, Riverway East and then Clinton Elementary School had served this neighbourhood, but a more central location was preferable to the School Board to limit bussing of students, so Riverside School was opened in 1953. There were 84 students registered in its first year, but by the late 1970s, enrolments across the City had declined and a number of schools, including Riverside, were closed.

At that time Mr. James Herd and Mr. Peters were the only residents of the district...Soon, however, the timber was removed, streets laid out and other conveniences such as water, light and transportation provided... The school population of the district has increased so rapidly that the school has been enlarged twice this year and is at the present time inadequate. About 200 children are attending now. There are three churches in the district and one mission...At present time there are two large blocks containing six stores..."

Real estate ventures became quite active in the Vancouver Heights and Capitol Hill areas of Burnaby by 1908. Brokerage firms and agents who bought large tracts, subdivided and sold them off in parcels and by 1909 had adopted the name "Capitol Hill" to describe Burnaby's newest neighbourhood. In his book, History of Burnaby and Vicinity," historian George Green explains that the term "Capitol Hill" was taken from ancient Rome where the civic centre was built upon the Capitoline Hill, one of the seven hills of the eternal city. In 1909, the Scott Brokerage Company advertised the sale of lots on Capitol Hill, calling it "one of Vancouver's swellest suburbs."

"Picturesquely situated on the south-westerly slope of the highest hill on the Burrard Peninsula is a district that in many ways resembles the early pioneer settlements…its centre is at the intersection of east Hastings Street and Sperling Avenue. Only a few years ago a dense forest covered this area and the settlers were few and some distance apart. After the war working men began to enter the Lochdale woods in quest of cheap home-sites. Today there are more than 400 residents in the district who combine to make a happy contented industrious community living on the edge of a big city yet enjoying the life offered by the country...The Community Hall is the centre of all social activities. Dances, concerts and other forms of entertainment are all there...Curtis Street runs from Sperling Avenue up to the hill, locally known as Hastings Grove. Burnaby North and Burnaby South were the first high schools built in the City. Before the high school opened, Burnaby students had to travel to Vancouver if they wished to pursue education beyond an elementary level. In 1921, arrangements were made to use the basement of the Presbyterian Church for instruction of local students. By 1922 the Burnaby North High School opened at its first permanent location (4375 Pandora Street - which is now Rosser Elementary). In 1945, the Willingdon Avenue site was built and was used until a new building was constructed in 1961 on Hammarskjold Drive. From 1962, the school was used as Burnaby Heights Junior High school, but it closed in 1982 and the junior high students went to the new Burnaby North on Hammarskjold.

During the height of the real estate boom between 1909 and 1913, Vancouver developer Frederick Munson plotted the subdivision of more than 150 acres of land on Curtis Street east of Sperling Avenue, on the newly logged slopes of remote Burnaby Mountain. Burnaby opened up Curtis Street to facilitate access to Hastings Grove and Munson agreed to pay one-third of the cost but never did. He also paid only $1000.00 down on the agreed price of the land. When he failed to make further payments, the mortgage holders foreclosed and re-sold the properties. People who had bought lots from Munson lost not only the land they though they owned, but also the money they had paid for it. Hastings Grove was a disaster. The converted automobile - which served as the bus - stopped running. The few houses and most of the lots reverted to the Municipality because of non-payment of taxes and are now part of Burnaby Mountain Park. The only remaining building is the old Hastings Grove Store which still stands as an apartment building.

The original Barnet mill burned down in 1909 after a dramatic explosion in the boiler house. The company rebuilt a new plant, considered a model of mill construction. The company's timber was towed down the Pacific in huge rafts containing about 400,000 to 500,000 board feet. Mill capacity during a 10-hour day was 150,000 board feet with an amazing annual output of 50 million feet.

The Seattle contractor was forbidden from doing the work in the US because of American neutrality regulations and he set up the secret plant here without the knowledge of the Canadian Government.

Between 1905 and 1924, the Broadview neighbourhood in Burnaby was settled by almost 100 families who saw the advantage of living in an area that was served by two railway lines - the B.C. Electric Railway and the Great Northern Railway. Touted as being only a 20 minute car ride to the city centre, this neighbourhood expanded during the early 1920s with the promise of a new direct access road to the city being built by the Great Northern Railway company and new blocks being opened up on two government reserves adjoining it.
