This charming home was built for George Norman Stowe (1885-1955) and his wife Lillian (née Ross) Stowe after they purchased this property from the Municipality of Burnaby in a Depression-era tax sale. George Stowe was a civil engineer with the Provincial Department of Public Works from 1905 until 1950. Inspired by the British Arts and Crafts movement, this stuccoed cottage is notable for its picturesque side gabled roof with sloped eaves, and a jerkin-headed dormer with half-timbering. Multi-paned casement windows are used throughout the house, adding to the picturesque effect. A verandah with a colonnade of pillars on the east side of the home overlooks a ravine.

Local farmers William Alexander Mawhinney (1870-1953) and Annie Josephine Mawhinney (née Sutcliff, 1871-1956) built this residence as their retirement home. It was the last of several houses built in the immediate vicinity by members of the Mawhinney family between 1909 and 1930. Born in Ireland, William Mawhinney first came to Burnaby to help his brother Isaiah establish his fruit farm. Due to his farm management experience, in 1908 William became foreman of the Avalon estate at Deer Lake that was owned by F.J. Hart. When he retired in 1930, William had fifty years of experience as a fruit and grain farmer.This house is situated on its lot at an angle, rather than parallel to the street, to take advantage of the view of wooded Buckingham Creek that runs through the northeast section of the property. Complementing the picturesque character of the property is this charming cottage-style residence, which is an excellent example of an interwar Storybook Cottage. During the years between the two World Wars, domestic styles in North America were resolutely historicist. In order to display good taste, it was expected that a house would have an identifiable period revival style. As economics dictated that houses of the time were generally modest, they often assumed a cottage appearance that provided a romantic ideal of traditional domesticity. The American Sesquicentennial reinforced this historicist trend, and the most popular Hollywood movies of the time were swashbuckling costume dramas. With its distinctive roughcast stucco and half-timbering, this house is an excellent example of this housing trend. The rolled roof edges, with steam-bent cedar shingles, simulate a traditional thatched roof. Other picturesque features include a front porch with round-arched openings, battered wall buttresses, an oriel window and diamond-paned leaded casement windows.

This bungalow was built by local farmer William Alexander Mawhinney (1870-1953) and Annie J. Mawhinney (1871-1956). This was one of several houses built in the immediate vicinity by members of the Mawhinney family between 1909 and 1930. William Mawhinney first came to Burnaby to help his brother Isaiah establish his fruit farm. In about 1930, William and Annie Mawhinney built a new house at 6011 Buckingham Avenue. This home is architecturally notable for its unusual front-gabled dormer, which is divided into parallel ridges at its peak. Though the original exterior wall siding has been covered by a later coat of stucco, it otherwise remains in largely original condition including double-hung windows with multi-paned upper sashes, front door with full-length sidelights and a decorative built-in window box.

This elegant house is a prominent local landmark, with a bellcast hipped roof, deep bracketed eaves and Doric porch columns. The use of the various Colonial Revival styles had gained new popularity during the 1920s at the time of the American Sesquicentennial, as is evident in the symmetrical façade composition and detailing. It was the home of William Alexander Blott (1878-1962), a shipper at the Broder Canning Company and later a real estate agent, and his wife Edith Carruthers Blott (née Shaw, 1890-1972), who were married in 1913. It is one of the few remaining larger estate homes along the formerly rural Douglas Road.

Description
The Vorce Station is a modest utilitarian passenger tram shelter, originally constructed at the foot of Nursery Street as part of the British Columbia Electric Railway Company’s Burnaby Lake Interurban Line. In 1953, it was moved to a local farm by the Lubbock family, and in 1977 it was relocated to Burnaby Village Museum. The wood-frame structure has a rectangular plan and hipped roof. It is enclosed on three sides, with an open side for access to the train platform and a single long built-in bench across the back of the station.
Heritage Value
The heritage value of the Vorce Station is as the last remaining interurban station in Burnaby and one of the few extant structures left in the Greater Vancouver region that were once part of the extensive British Columbia Electric Railway (BCER) interurban system. The Vorce Station was designed and built by the BCER, and is typical of the small local passenger stations on the Burnaby Lake and Chilliwack interurban lines. It was named after C.B. Vorce, the Chief Engineer for the company. The impact of the interurban line on local development was extremely significant, as it connected the cities of New Westminster and Vancouver, and enabled the residents of Burnaby to form a cohesive municipality from the mainly rural lands remaining between the two larger centres. Much of the early development in Burnaby was due to the growth of the interurban rail lines. The heritage significance for this station also lies in its interpretive value within the Burnaby Village Museum. The Vorce Station is an important cultural feature for the interpretation of Burnaby’s transportation history to the public, and is an important surviving feature of the BCER interurban system.
Defining Elements
The character defining features of the Vorce Station include its: - rectangular form and pyramidal roof with overhanging eaves - simple vernacular design and utilitarian nature - cedar shingle wall cladding - cedar shingle-clad roof with galvanized pressed tin roof ridges - interior vertical tongue-and-groove panelling - heritage graffiti: initials and messages carved and scrawled on the walls - identifying sign with large letters visible at a distance

As Burnaby developed into a more urban suburb of Vancouver and New Westminster the Deer Lake area retained much of its rural character. In 1949 Deer Lake park was established on the lake's eastern shore. The relocation of the Municipal Hall in the mid-1950s to the Deer Lake area began the vision of developing an administrative and cultural centre for Burnaby. The opportunity for developing this centre began with the opening of the Arts Centre, Century Gardens and the Burnaby Art Gallery in 1967. This was followed by the development of the Deer Lake Park as Burnaby's primary urban park.

Douglas Road was built between 1862-1865 by the Royal Engineers based in New Westminster. Originally known as the Douglas Street Trail, it took its name from Governor James Douglas. In 1926 a new connection was made to reach Grandview Road in Vancouver at Boundary Road. To distinguish this new highway it was renamed the Grandview Highway and it became commonly known as the combined Grandview-Douglas Highway until 1968 when the Burnaby and New Westminister sections were renamed Canada Way, in recognition of Canada's Centennial in 1967. The old part of Douglas Road north of Sprott Street remained intact.

In their legends, the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh native people identified Burnaby's Deer Lake as a mystical location. For generations, one story was told of an underground tunnel connecting Deer Lake with False Creek. In Pauline Johnson's famous book "Legends of Vancouver," the story "Deer Lake" records how Old Chief Capilano chased a giant seal, which escaped through an underground tunnel in False Creek, to Deer Lake in the early 1800s. Aboriginal peoples still came to camp by the Lake up until the early 1900s. At the turn of the century, Deer Lake was recognized for its tranquility and beautiful scenery, which, in turn, attracted New Westminster and Vancouver residents to relocate to the area and build family homes.

In 1894, Burnaby pioneer L. Claude Hill built this home near the shore of Deer Lake. Mr. Hill was married that year to Annie Sara Kenrick, and they took up residence in the house until 1906 when they sold the property and built a new home in the vicinity of Buckingham and Sperling. Brookfield was still on the property when the Burnaby Village Museum was planned in 1971 as Heritage Village, but it was removed to make room for other buildings on the site. In 1894, Claude discovered a midden on his farm and recovered many artifacts. In 2002, his descendants donated this valuable collection to the Museum.

After New Westminster was established as the Capital City, the surrounding lands were surveyed by the Royal Engineers. The discovery of Burnaby Lake by Robert Burnaby in 1859 soon led to the construction of Douglas Road to Deer Lake in 1861. The completion of the tramline in 1891 renewed interest in the lands around both Burnaby Lake and Deer Lake and soon a group of gentlemen farmers had established strawberry fields and orchards to serve the New Westminster market. These were the most productive and well managed "fruit ranches" in the Fraser Valley. Local strawberries were so admired that they commanded 50 cents more per crate at local markets. One local paper reported that the area appeared as if "an English Village had been taken and planted amidst the grandeur of British Columbia scenery."

The Oakalla Prison Farm opened in 1912 and was hailed as the most modern facility of its kind. Initially designed to hold 150 men and 50 women, by the 1950s, the population was well over 1000. A working farm, the prison had its own dairy, vegetable gardens and livestock. From the beginning, the location of Oakalla on 185 acres of scenic land next to Burnaby's Deer Lake was the source of contention with residents petitioning the government to relocate the prison and by 1979 it was decided to close the farm and 64 acres of land were transferred to Burnaby for inclusion on the Deer Lake Park. In 1991, Oakalla closed forever and the buildings were demolished to make way for a new residential housing development and an expansion of the park.

This school was the fifth to open in Burnaby and was initially known as Lake View School. In 1913, names of Burnaby Schools were changed to reflect their location and thus Lake View became Douglas Road. The first building on the site was torn down in the 1950s but the main building, which was constructed in 1928, remains although it had additions and renovations done in 1950, 1954, 1960, 1961, 1967 and 1973.

Along with logging and sawmills, Burnaby became known as a prime agricultural area and the Burnaby Lake Neighbourhood saw the development of many vegetable and fruit farms. Growers in the Burnaby and Deer Lake districts took their produce to the tram line on Edmonds Street and shipped it to markets in New Westminster and Vancouver on a specially designed interurban freight car that was open-sided for easy loading. The car's canvas curtains which sometimes came loose and flapped like wings in the wind led people to dub it "the flying dutchman." Most Burnaby fruit and vegetable growers depended on seasonal Chinese work forces and other local Chinese farm residents to oversee operations; these workers being recruited from New Westminsters' Asian community. Besides being good farmers, Burnaby Lake's early residents fostered a strong sense of community. Both L. Claude Hill and his brother Bernard were elected to Burnaby Municipal council and Bernard was the one who knocked on doors to find enough children to meet the qualifications for establishing a school in the district.

The Burnaby Lake Line was constructed due to the advocacy of Burnaby residents and the Municipality of Burnaby to build the line. A petition was circulated by residents in 1907, and eventually substantial land bonuses were given to the company to induce them to build the line. Property owners in the area hoped the construction of the line would increase their land values. Construction of the 15-mile line was announced in 1909, and the line opened in 1911. The line travelled from Vancouver to New Westminister through central Burnaby.The last day of service was October 23, 1953. When the Trans Canada highway was constructed in the 1960s, it followed the right of way of the Burnaby Lake Line through Burnaby.

The road currently known as Sperling Avenue was originally the "Pole Line Road" - so named because it served as the route for a power transmission line to connect the Buntzen Lake Power Plant to the Burnaby sub-station at Griffiths Avenue in 1905. It was named after Rochfort Henry Sperling, the Superintendant of the B.C.E.R. Company. The B.C. Electric Railway contracted Herbert Gilley to open the Pole Line Road from Hastings to Johnston Road, as Gilley Brothers were already actively logging the area.

The BCER Connaught Cut-off was named after the Duke of Connaught, who visited Burnaby in 1912. The original route of the interurban tramline was built along 12th Street into New Westminister, which proved to be too steep of a route, with many accidents occuring due to the grade. The Connaught Cut-Off was built in 1912 to re-route the interurban tram to the south of its original route from Highland Park Station, avoiding the steep hill on 12th Street. Streetcar service was introduced on the now abandonned track on 12th Street, connecting to the Highland Park Station. This streetcar route was known as the Highland Park Streetcar.

The Douglas-Gilpin Neighbourhood developed into a diverse area incorporating residential, business, educational and park districts in the period after 1955. The BCIT site was built in the early 1960s, shortly after the Burnaby Municipal Hall was located on Canada Way near Deer Lake in 1956. The construction of the Municipal Hall at this location fostered the creation of an administrative and business centre adjacent to the park, while the northern and central areas of the neighbourhood retained their primarily residential character.

When staff outgrew the municipal buildings at Edmonds and Kingsway, a debate erupted over where to build a new municipal hall. North Burnaby residents argued against the Kingsway and Edmonds site as it was too removed for their needs, but South Burnaby residents were not prepared to accept a hall in North Burnaby. The debate was finally resolved when it was suggested that the new civic centre for the municipality be in the exact geographic centre of Burnaby. Fortunately, this meant that the new hall was to be built near Deer Lake, in the beautiful Central Valley setting. Burnaby voters accepted this decision and approved the $625,000.00 it would take to build the new structure and the official opening ceremony was held June 22, 1956 when then Reeve Charles MacSorley received the keys to the hall from the contractor.
