Description

There are two hanging racks for costumes on hangers and two compartments for Ken and Barbie. Measures 32 cm. h x 24.5 cm. l x 16 cm. w. and contains inner small innner drawer with handle.
Object History
From the Yanko family home in Burnaby. Storage case made by John Yanko, father, Barbie clothes made by Lillian Yanko, mother. Toys used by daughters Rhonda and Charmaine Yanko. Annie D. Basiuk (later Yanko) was born on February 25, 1902 in Sheho, Saskatchewan (formerly Sheho, North West Territories). Daniel "Dan" Yanko was born in Kobilnicha, Ukraine in 1887 and immigrated to Canada in May or June of 1905. Daniel Yanko married Annie D. Basiuk and had thirteen children together. Their son, John Ivan Yanko was born on the family farm, near Kelliher, Saskatchewan, on June 27, 1923. In grade six, John was pulled out of school to help support the family. Eugenia “Jenny” Haresomovych (later Carman) was born August 8, 1904 in Galecia, Austria. She came to Canada in 1928, when her parents sent her to live with the Austrian consular in Halifax. A year later, she was in The Pas with Albert Edward Carman, with whom she would have three children. Their daughter, Leida Doria "Lillian Doris" Carman was born in The Pas, Manitoba March 24, 1929. Eugenia “Jenny” (Haresomovych) Carman later re-married Joseph Nagy who was born in Hungary in October 3, 1900. Jenny, Joseph and the children moved to Nelson, British Columbia, where Joseph worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway. At the age of twenty, John Yanko met his future wife Lillian Doris Carman while visiting relatives in Burnaby. Lillian received a rail pass because of her dad’s employment with the CPR and at fourteen had gone to visit her Godmother in Burnaby. John Ivan Yanko and Leida Doria "Lillian Doris" Carman were married October 16, 1948 in Nelson, British Columbia and moved into the basement of John’s sister’s house on Union Street. Lillian began working at the downtown Woodward’s store as a cashier in 1948. In 1950, the young couple bought property at 7385 (later renumbered 7391) Broadway in Burnaby and began constructing a house as they could afford it. Knowing she’d be let go if she was pregnant, when Lillian was expecting her first child, Jenny sewed her several versions of the same outfit; they all used the same material, but each was a little bit larger than the last to accommodate her expanding girth. Rhonda, born in 1953 and Charmaine, born in 1955, grew up in the Broadway home. They attended school at Sperling Elementary, and later at Burnaby North high school. Lillian left her job to be a stay-at-home mom when Rhonda was born, but that changed in 1963 when John and Charmaine were in a car accident that left John temporarily unable to work. Joseph Nagy died April 20, 1962; his wife Eugenia “Jenny” (Haresomovych) (Carman) Nagy passed away August 14, 1985. Daniel "Dan" Yanko died in 1976; his wife Annie D. (Basiuk) Yanko died in 1997. John Yanko later returned to work, establishing his own tile setting business and working until age eighty-two. John and Lillian lived out the rest of their married lives on the Broadway property. John Ivan Yanko passed away in 2010; his wife Leida Doria "Lillian Doris" Carman (Carman) Yanko passed away in 2011.

Description
Block plane made by the Stanley Rule and Level Co. It is a Bailey No. 22. The body is wood with a cast iron top which houses the blade and cap. The blade is adjustable by a knob and the angle can be changed by a lever behind the blade. The wood body of the plane has had a 1/4 inch removed from the sole. This has been replaced by a 1/4 inch thick piece of hardwood secured by one screw at the right rear corner. The replacement sole turns freely on the one screw. This is most likely a repair or replacement for a worn sole.

Description
Rectangular coiled cedar root basket with cedar slat foundation and remnants of a loopwork rim. The shiny appearance of this grass suggests it is canary grass. Black dyed and red cherry bark are used for the zigzag designs. Coast Salish: Sḵwx̱wú7mesh?
Object History
The donor reported that the baskets were traded in the early 1920s for clothes by the donor's mother, who lived in North Vancouver. Her mother told her the "Capilano Indians" used to go door to door with their baskets in North Vancouver.
Zig zags are sometimes referred to as lightening or snake tracks.

Description
Oval shaped coiled cedar root basket with cedar slat foundation. Overcast rim with remnants of a loopwork border. Decorated with vertical stripes of imbricated designs in canary grass and black dyed cherry bark. Cherry bark can be distinguished by the small eyes in the surface of the bark. If the basket maker is skilled the bark has a shiny appearance, if it has not been scraped properly it has a greyish tinge. Canary grass is differentiated from cattail and bear grass by its shiny appearance according to a Stó:lō/Stl’atl’imx elder and basket maker from Mount Currie, who was married into Upper Sḵwx̱wú7mesh.
Object History
Basket, ca. 1895-1910, from the collection of the L. Claude Hill family, who owned the property that became the Burnaby Village Museum. According to the Hill family, L. Claude's wife Anne Sarah Hill (nee Kendrick) traded blankets for baskets, although it is not known if this particular basket was obtained in this manner. Indigenous people travelled the trail that crossed Deer Lake Brook (Douglas Road / Canada Way).
Measurements
Measurements: width 31.5 cm and length 51.5 cm and depth 19.5 cm all measured from top edge to outside of basket, not including trim.

Object History
Item was part of a scrapbook created by Cecil Chue Kan Lee documenting the time he was employed as a Prodcue Buyer for Kelly Douglas and Company Limited and Western Commodities Limited in the 1970s and early 1980s. As a produce buyer for Kelly Douglas, Cecil Lee worked closely with local farmers along Marine Drive and in the Fraser Valley. The Burnaby company was one of the largest food distributors in Canada. In the mid-1970s, Lee was asked to oversee the import of Chinese mandarin oranges into Canada. Until that time, mandarin oranges had come from Japan and were sold in the winter, especially at Christmas. When the Japanese market could no longer keep up with demand, Kelly Douglas looked to China. The company relied on Lee’s cultural knowledge to build this very profitable part of their business.

History
Annie D. Basiuk (later Yanko) was born on February 25, 1902, in Sheho, Saskatchewan (formerly Sheho, North West Territories). Daniel "Dan" Yanko was born in Kobyl'nya, Ukraine, in 1887, and immigrated to Canada in May or June of 1905. Dan married Annie D. Basiuk and they had 13 children together. Their son, John Ivan Yanko, was born on the family farm, near Kelliher, Saskatchewan, on June 27, 1923. In grade six, John was pulled out of school to help support the family. Eugenia “Jenny” Haresomovych (later Carman) was born August 8, 1904, in Galecia, Austria. She came to Canada in 1928, when her parents sent her to live with the Austrian consular in Halifax. A year later, she was in The Pas with Albert Edward Carman, with whom she would have three children. Their daughter, Leida Doria "Lillian Doris" Carman, was born in The Pas, Manitoba, on March 24, 1929. Jenny later re-married Joseph Nagy who was born in Hungary in October 3, 1900. Jenny, Joseph, and the children moved to Nelson, British Columbia, where Joseph worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway. At the age of 20, John Ivan Yanko met his future wife, Lillian Doris, while visiting relatives in Burnaby. Lillian received a rail pass because of her dad’s employment with the CPR and, at 14, had gone to visit her godmother in Burnaby. John and Lillian Doris were married on October 16, 1948, in Nelson, British Columbia, and moved into the basement of John’s sister’s house on Union Street. Rhonda, born in 1953, and Charmaine, born in 1955, grew up in the Broadway home. They attended school at Sperling Elementary, and later at Burnaby North High School. Lillian left her job to be a stay-at-home mom when Rhonda was born, but that changed in 1963 when John and Charmaine were in a car accident that left John temporarily unable to work. Joseph Nagy died on April 20, 1962; his wife Jenny passed away on August 14, 1985. Dan died in 1976; his wife Annie died in 1997. John later returned to work, establishing his own tile-setting business and working until age 82. John and Lillian lived out the rest of their married lives on the Broadway property. John passed away in 2010; his wife Lillian Doris passed away in 2011.

Series
Scope and Content
Series consists of records pertaining to the zoning and rezoning of property and buildings in Burnaby. Includes records pertaining to each zoning or rezoning, and the accompanying public hearings. Series also includes correspondence, agendas and minutes of the Board of Variance. The Board of Variance is an independent body that considers requests for minor variances to the Burnaby Zoning Bylaw regarding the site, size and dimensions of buildings. The Board originally consisted of five members, including two members of the public appointed by Council, two members appointed by the Provincial Government, and one member appointed by the other four. In March, 2003, the Local Government Act s.899(1) was amended and the manner of appointments to the Board of Variance was changed, resulting in all members being Council appointees. The Board of Variance remained an independent body with complete discretion in its decisions, only the manner of appointments was altered. The Board of Variance was formerly called Burnaby Zoning Board of Appeal from ca. 1960 until May 1968.
