Photograph of the first class at Duthie School.The photograph is reproduced in George Green's "History of Burnaby," pg. 128, and the class is identified as, back row (l to r): [first name unknown] Adams, Merlin Berry, Orland Berry, and Charlie Blane. Middle row (l to r): Frank Amsbury, [unknown], Miss Wilson, May Duthie, and [unknown]. Front row (l to r): [first name unknown] Adams, Florence Duthie, Ernest Reda, and Alfonso Reda. According to an accompanying note prepared by Burnaby Village Museum: "In 1908 Mrs Charles Shannon wrote to the Burnaby school board expressing the need for a school to accommodate children living in the Cliff Avenue - Johnston Road area. In response, a site was cleared 100 yards west of Cliff Ave., on the north side of Johnston Road (later called Broadway) at a cost of $500. A school building was erected, a well and pump installed at a cost of $75 and outhouses constructed at a cost of $50. When Duthie school (also known as Johnston Road school) opened in 1908 there was an enrolment of 12 pupils seen in the photograph with their teacher Miss Wilson." An annotation on the back of the photograph reads, "Original Duthie School / Burnaby, BC - 1908."
