The webinar is titled "50 Years of Blacksmithing at BVM". The webinar is the sixth in a series of six webinars presented in partnership by Burnaby Village Museum and Burnaby Public Library. The live webinar was also made available on the Burnaby Village Museum's facebook page. Community members were invited to participate by bringing questions during the interactive online sessions. The session opens with the host Ashley Jones, providing introductions. Following the introduction, the presentation begins with Eric Damer and Lorne Gray’s slide presentation titled “50 years of Blacksmithing at Burnaby Village Museum”. The presentation is an historical exploration of the blacksmith shop through images and commentary from these two long-standing museum blacksmiths. Eric and Lorne's presentation is organized into themes beginning with “The Age of Nostalgia” where they discuss the implementation of the original Burnaby Village Museum blacksmithing shop and live exhibit with a working blacksmith when the museum opened in November 1971. They comment on the original design of the forge and other components implemented into the design of the blacksmith shop, stereotypes of blacksmiths and various items that were forged on site in the blacksmith shop. “The Age of Accuracy” looks at changes to the Burnaby Village Museum’s programming and exhibits in the 1980s which included focusing more on the history of Burnaby and upgrading some of the components in the blacksmith shop including blowers, tools, forge design and costuming. Eric and Lorne comment on the history of Burnaby blacksmith, Frank Wagner who operated as a blacksmith in Burnaby “Wagner & Son” on Kingsway. Frank was a trained machinist, farrier and an automotive blacksmith who patented and manufactured the “Wagner Triple Spring Bumper”. With this information, the Burnaby Village Museum changed the name of the blacksmith shop to reflect the history of Burnaby blacksmith Frank Wagner. In “The Age of Diversity” Eric and Lorne talk about a shift in the 1990s when the staffing of the blacksmith shop was diversified to include women and people from diverse cultural backgrounds. These changes as well as an increased interest in artistic blacksmithing also lead to updates in Burnaby Village Museum’s blacksmith training procedures and interpretation, increased course offerings in blacksmithing and a renovated blacksmith shop which included new forges and equipment as well as an improved viewing area. Eric and Lorne talk about specifics regarding blacksmithing techniques and equipment and improvements to make this exhibit more accessible. Their presentation is followed by a short video highlighing Burnaby Village Museum interpreters who have worked as blacksmiths at Burnaby Village Museum. Each person shares their own perspectives on their experiences working as a blacksmith and interacting with the public. In the last part of the webinar, Eric and Lorne answer questions from attendees and further reflect and comment on their own experiences working as blacksmiths, various tools and techniques used and blacksmithing course offerings at Burnaby Village Museum.

- Host biography: Ashley Jones is the Burnaby Village Museum Education Programmer, responsible for the development and administration of school and public programs at BVM. She has a Master of Arts degree in History and is passionate about creating hands-on programming that promotes historical and environmental literacy. Presenters biography: Eric Damer is a Burnaby Village Museum Interpreter, Museum Registrar, Researcher and Blacksmith. Eric pounded hot steel for the first time in 1977 in junior high. Fifteen years later, he joined Burnaby Village Museum where he has smithed for three decades. He also provides historical research for museum exhibits and special projects. Outside the museum, Eric is a social historian with a special interest in educational history. Lorne Gray has a BA with a major in the History of Science and Technology. He took up blacksmithing as a hobby when he was promoted to middle management and had to start hitting things. He was hired by Burnaby Village Museum as a blacksmith to fill in during the Christmas season of 2001. He has attended several blacksmithing conferences and taken classes with both an artist blacksmith and a journeyman blacksmith. On the weekends, you’ll find him teaching many of the museum’s public blacksmithing courses. He also has a steam ticket that permits him to run the museum’s steam boiler and stationery steam engines.

- The Alfred and Ruth MacLeod Cottage is valued as a significant example of the early development of summer estates in Burnaby, specifically in the Deer Lake neighbourhood, that attracted residents from the burgeoning cities of New Westminster and Vancouver. Access to the area was facilitated by the construction of the Burnaby Lake Interurban tramline, which opened in June 1911. This modest, rustic cottage illustrates the desire for a simple country lifestyle and retreat into nature of those who settled on the south shore of Deer Lake. While the grand mansions on the north shore of Deer Lake are set in formally landscaped gardens, the informality of this cottage demonstrates reverence for its natural, wooded surroundings, oriented towards views of Deer Lake. The Alfred and Ruth MacLeod Cottage is important for its connection with prominent New Westminster insurance and real estate broker, Alfred W. MacLeod, and his wife, Ruth. The MacLeods had recently constructed a large city home, and built this cottage as a summer residence in 1913. In 2005, the Alfred and Ruth MacLeod Cottage was purchased by the City of Burnaby and today constitutes part of the Deer Lake Park Heritage Precinct, which is Burnaby's most significant collection of historic sites.

- The Andy Johnson House is a large, one and one-half storey plus above-ground basement wood-frame mansion on a rubble-stone granite foundation with a red terra cotta pantile roof and an octagonal corner turret. The building stands in a prominent location on a corner lot on Kingsway, one of Burnaby’s main transportation and commercial corridors, and stands adjacent to the Burlington Square Development.

- The Andy Johnson House 'Glenedward' is a valued representation of a prominent upper middle-class family dwelling from the pre-First World War era. Andrew M. Johnson (1861-1934), an early Vancouver pioneer, and his wife Margaret built this house in 1912, in an imposing style favoured by the newly wealthy of the prewar boom period. Born in Norway, Andrew Johnson arrived in Vancouver just months after the Great Fire of 1886 and went into partnership with J. (Ollie) Atkins in a transportation company that became the Mainland Transfer Company, eventually the largest of its kind in Vancouver. Johnson also operated Burnaby's historic Royal Oak Hotel, once located on the opposite corner from his estate. Additionally, the Andy Johnson House is significant for the high-quality design and construction of both the house and its landscaped setting. Designed in the British Arts and Crafts style, the house exhibits a rare degree of opulence in building materials, including imported terra cotta roof tiles, oak and walnut interior millwork, and stained glass manufactured by the Royal City Glass Company. The rubble-stone foundations and perimeter walls were obtained from two massive granite glacial erratic boulders found on the property. The house has been relocated closer to the corner, but the encircling stone walls, the gate posts and gates manufactured by the Westminster Iron Works and some of the original plantings have been retained. A grouping of three giant Sequoias, other mature deciduous trees and massings of shrubbery indicate the type of landscape setting considered appropriate for an estate house in the early years of the twentieth century.

The Zoom webinar is the sixth in a series of six "Neighbourhood Speaker Series" webinars exploring a range of topics shared by Indigenous speakers and knowledge keepers that were presented and made available to the public between April 27 and May 12, 2021. The live webinar was also made available on the Burnaby Village Museum's facebook page. Community members were invited to participate by bringing questions and comments during the interactive online sessions. In this webinar, Brandon supports his presentation with slides and explores the following questions; If we have not changed the way we introduce ourselves to each other and this land then what are we reconciling?" and "If resource exploitation, racism and colonization continue today, how can we change?" Brandon Gabriel, mixed-media artist and activist, looks back at some highlights of his twenty seven year artistic journey and shares what you can do to tackle reconciliation in your own life. Brandon presents counter narratives speaking to the importance of: Land; Languages; Colonial Annihilation and Indigenous Resurgence. Brandon pauses half way through his presentation to ask and reflect on the question "How far back do you know your ancestors on your mother's side?". While listeners are reflecting, Brandon shares a recording of Dennis Leon of Kwantlen First Nation performing the song “True Love”. Following this, Brandon takes questions from the audience and comments on the importance of matriarchal lineage in indigenous culture. In the second half of the presentation, Brandon talks about his own art and shares examples of Indigenous artists work including: Bill Reid, Zacharias Kunuk, Marianne Nicholson; Brian Jungan and Rebecca Bellmore. Following the presentation, Brandon Gabriel takes questions from the audience that are moderated by the host, Jane Lemke.

- Brandon Gabriel is an award winning, and Internationally recognized visual artist from the Kwantlen First Nation, in unceded Fort Langley B.C. Brandon was educated at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (1999-2003) and at Emily Carr University of Art and Design (2003-2006). Brandon has over twenty seven years of professional experience as a designer, wood carver, mixed media sculptor, graphic designer, illustrator, and educator. He has exhibited works in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, South America, the USA, and across Canada.

- Arthur Long, of the Water Rights Office of Victoria, purchased this land from neighbour Henry Ramsay, and built this beautiful Arts and Crafts styled home. The house appears to have many similarities to the neighbouring Ramsay House, which was designed by Vancouver architect R. Mackay Fripp. The house has retained its original complex gabled roof, triangular eave brackets and horizontal siding.

- Photograph of Charles Bruce Patterson and his first wife, Elva Patterson.
- Charles Bruce Patterson (called Bruce) built many early homes in the Edmonds district of Burnaby. He also built the Sperling Avenue School in 1913. For a time he was put in charge of Vulcan Iron Works of New Westminster, a business owned by his father Dugald Campbell Patterson Sr. Bruce quickly developed a passion for wrought iron work which would last his entire lifetime. Some years after the Vulcan Iron Works property was absorbed into the Dominion Bridge Company, Bruce opened a smaller iron works operation in the Arrow Transfer building on Granville Island. He named this company Vulcan Metal Works Ltd. Here, he made a variety of artistic railings for homes, churches and apartment buildings and drew inspiration from both Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. In addition to his wrought iron railings, he also designed and created many other architectural pieces which included iron patio furniture, leaded glass window panels for French doors, headboards, and decorative designs for the exteriors of clocks. Bruce also built and renovated numerous homes throughout the lower mainland. Bruce married Elva Eleanore Elliott on July 17, 1918. After Elva’s death he married again at the age of 82. His second wife’s name was Martha May (Bird) Summers. [Biography provided by Raymond Reitsma.]

In this webinar, Debra Sloan talks about the life and work of UBC professor and Burnaby resident, Thomas Kakinuma who was a celebrated award winning and internationally recognized ceramicist known for his intriguing mid-century pieces, charismatic animal sculptures and return to Japanese aesthetics through his post-war practice. Debra supports her presentation with archival, personal and exhibit photographs showcasing Thomas Kakinuma's life and works. During breaks in the presentation, Christina and Debra take questions from webinar participants on zoom as well as viewers from the live recording on Burnaby Village Museum's Facebook page. - History
- Vancouverite, Debra Sloan gained an interest in ceramics early, in her teen years, and her passion for the practice has remained with her throughout her life. Her education in ceramics is a mix of self-taught informal learning, as well as formal learning, including studying at the Vancouver School of Art in the early 80s and later receiving a Bachelor of Fine Art from Emily Carr University in the early 2000s. Her work has been exhibited regionally, nationally, and internationally and she has participated in numerous artist residencies, and is the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, with projects funded by British Columbia Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. Closer to home, Debra instructed sculpture classes at the Burnaby Shadbolt Center for the Arts, where she worked for over two decades. Over the years, Debra also took to researching, writing and publishing about the history of ceramics in British Columbia and has worked with colleagues to build a Registry of B.C. ceramicists. Recently, in 2017 and 2018, she was involved in the West Vancouver Museum’s retrospective exhibition of Thomas Kakinuma’s work, writing the catalogue, “The Ceramic Art of Thomas Kakinuma.”

The Zoom webinar is the fourth in a series of six "Neighbourhood Speaker series" webinars exploring a range of topics shared by Indigenous speakers and knowledge keepers that were presented and made available to the public between April 27 and May 12, 2021. The live webinar was also made available on the Burnaby Village Museum's facebook page. Community members were invited to participate by bringing questions during the interactive online sessions. In this webinar, viewers join Xwalacktun as he tours his studio, sharing the tools and processes of carving. Xwalacktun shares photographs detailing the long process of turning a twelve foot-tall tree into a house post for his recently completed installation in the Diamond Family Courtyard of Vancouver General Hospital. At the beginning of the presentation, Xwalacktun shares a welcome song from the late Chief Cie Baker. Following the presentation, Xwalacktun takes questions from the audience that are moderated by the host, Jane Lemke.
- History
- Xwalacktun (born Rick Harry) is a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation artist whose works are recognized internationally. He was given his name by his father, a Hereditary Chief from the Seymour Creek area. From 1978 to 1982, Xwalacktun attended Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, BC, and graduated with a degree in sculpture. Xwalacktun is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Order of British Columbia (O.B.C.) for his many contributions to various communities. Xwalacktun is an accomplished artist in wood, paper, stone, glass and metals and his work can be seen around the Lower Mainland region. - History
- Kate Petrusa is the Assistant Curator at the Burnaby Village Museum. In her role, she manages all aspects of the collection – including caring for physical artifacts and making their digital counterpart accessible. Before coming to Burnaby Village Museum in 2019, Kate has worked at several Museums around the Lower Mainland as a Curator and contractor since 2013. Ashley Jones is the Burnaby Village Museum Education Programmer, responsible for the development and administration of school and public programs at BVM. She has a Master of Arts degree in History and is passionate about creating hands-on programming that promotes historical and environmental literacy.

- This home was built by Daniel Mowat (1848-1923) and Amelia Mary Mowat (née Hoy, 1848-1923). Daniel originally worked as a merchant, and was operating a chicken farm at this location as early as 1908, and later a goat ranch. It is one of Burnaby’s few two-storey Arts and Crafts residences. The generous proportions of the house, its broad, medium-pitched, front-gabled roof and symmetrical design serve as further features. Additionally, the house boasts a high degree of integrity, retaining its original shingle wall cladding, half-timbered gables and original windows – a combination of casement windows with stained glass transoms and double-hung windows with square, multi-paned upper sashes.This house is located adjacent to what was once the Central Park interurban rail line, operated by the B.C. Electric Company, which conveniently connected this area of Burnaby to Vancouver. The arrival of this commuter line in 1892 led to the suburban development of this area of Burnaby.

- Built by David Graybill in 1913, this house is a unique example of a two-storey Arts and Crafts house. The visor roofs, which shield the upper storey windows, and the second storey balcony, which was incorporated into the ground floor verandah roof, add to the house’s character and remain its most notable decorative features. Other defining features are the wide, overhanging eaves with triangular eave brackets. Though the wooden siding has been covered with asbestos shingles–an easily-reversible alteration–the house remains in highly original condition.

- This house was constructed as an investment rental property by Nova Scotia-born Dr. James Collins Farish (1866-1952). Farish was a Vancouver physician and surgeon and an eye, ear, nose & throat specialist; he retired in 1941 after fifty years of practice. In 1903, he married his first wife, Annie Gower Revely (died 1922). His second wife, Ella Jean Morrison (1887-1953) was originally from Winslow, Quebec. With its hipped roof and gabled projections, this house displays the typical elements of the Edwardian era domestic architecture. Features such as exposed rafter tails, paired square porch columns and bracketed bay windows display the emerging influence of the Arts and Crafts style. The ground floor windows are excellent examples of the multiple assemblies of casement, fixed and transom windows favoured during the era. A recent restoration project has extensively altered the original appearance and character of this impressive home.

- Photograph portrait of Dugald Campbell Patterson, Sr.
- History
- Dugald Campbell Patterson Sr. arrived in Burnaby in 1894. He worked for Armstrong Morrison & Balfour and later became foreman boilermaker for the Vancouver Engineering Works. He was the first postmaster of Edmonds in 1909, and was elected a school trustee in 1912. He was a Director of the British Columbia Electric and Water Heat Company and was a member of the New Westminster Board of Trade. He founded an insurance and real estate company in Burnaby and New Westminster. Dugald Campbell Patterson Sr. was born in Partick, Scotland on January 2, 1860. He attended the Glasgow common school, and worked as a ship joiner at Barclay Curle & Company (founded in 1818) in Whiteinch, Scotland. After some years of study, he was employed in the Anchor Line Shipyards (founded in 1856) in Partick. Dugald arrived in Canada on July 1, 1884, and would soon add a second "T" to the spelling of his last name (changing it from "Paterson" to "Patterson"). He married Frances Mabel Webb on February 7, 1891. Together they helped form the Central Park Horticultural Society.Known for his expertise in the field of engineering, Dugald accepted a unique commission at the beginning of World War One. He travelled overseas to supervise a group of Canadians in the construction of submarines on the Clyde River in Glasgow. It was here that he sustained an injury which left him in a wheel chair. Upon his return home, he remained active in both municipal affairs and the arts. He developed a plan that would preserve ravines as parks in Burnaby, and he published a book of poetry. Dugald also served his communty through his membership in the Knights of Pythias,the Canadian Order of Forresters and the Home Reunion Association. Dugald died in Vancouver, BC on June 25, 1931. - Beautifully designed in an Arts and Crafts idiom, this church features a textural mix of finishes including lapped siding and stucco and half timbering in the gables. The British Columbian reported in July 1912 that: "The Baptists of Edmonds will possess a fine and well planned church when the building now commenced is ready for occupation. The architects are J.P. Matheson and Son, of Vancouver, and the contractors, Muttitt and Bell, of New Westminster. The entrance porch fronts Edmonds Road and the west side faces Vancouver Road. It will have a capacity for 272 sittings, spacious aisles and choir platform besides various rooms for Baptistery, vestry and robing apartments."

- Mr. Ernest Bolton Hermon, of the prominent engineering firm Hermon & Burwell, built this residence, and he and his wife, Katherine, lived here until 1935. The British Columbian described this home as “…a splendid mansion …which cost in the neighbourhood of $15,000.” Hermon was born into a Dutch family in Ontario in 1863, and moved to British Columbia in 1886. This is one of only three examples of the work of Samuel Maclure in Burnaby and is an outstanding example of his firm’s typical British Arts and Crafts style designs. Samuel Maclure (1860-1929) was known for his British Arts and Crafts style with meticulous attention paid to functional and beautiful interiors that utilized native wood combined with luxurious imported fittings. He was a leading exponent of the Art and Crafts design movement, and established a sophisticated local variation of residential architecture. Maclure’s Vancouver office, in association with his partner Cecil Croker Fox (1879-1916), received some sixty residential commissions between 1909-1915 as a result of the booming local economy and subsequent development of new residential districts. This partnership lasted until when Fox was killed overseas in active service during the First World War.The house has received some alterations, including stucco and brick being added to the lower floor, but it has retained its original form and massing including its symmetrical design, hipped roof and second floor half timbering.
