- The North Pacific Lumber Company in Barnet was one of Burnaby's first industrial developments and one of the largest in the British Empire. Partners James MacLaren and Frank Ross built the mill in 1889 (activated in 1899) as a requirement for obtaining 84,000 acres of timber rights in northern BC. Due to the mill's isolation, the firm built homes for its employees with families and bunkhouses for the bachelors which separated Caucasian workers from Chinese and Sikh workers. Barnet became a distinct company town with its own general store, school, post office, community hall and telephone exchange.

- According to Tsleil'wautuh Chief Len George, as many as 10,000 band members once lived along both sides of the Burrard Inlet, but disease took its toll in the 1400s and Europeans brought smallpox in the 1800s. In 1792, Captain George Vancouver charted this inlet of the Pacific Ocean.

- Central Park was one of the first and fastest-growing communities in Burnaby. Located along the electric tram line and the Vancouver Road (Kingsway), it was also chosen for a government settlement project referred to as the Central Park Small Holdings. The lands held by the Provincial Government were subdivided and sold around 1894 and by 1899 the settlement was large enough to warrant the construction of an Anglican Church there.

- In their legends, the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh native people identified Burnaby's Deer Lake as a mystical location. For generations, one story was told of an underground tunnel connecting Deer Lake with False Creek. In Pauline Johnson's famous book "Legends of Vancouver," the story "Deer Lake" records how Old Chief Capilano chased a giant seal, which escaped through an underground tunnel in False Creek, to Deer Lake in the early 1800s. Aboriginal peoples still came to camp by the Lake up until the early 1900s. At the turn of the century, Deer Lake was recognized for its tranquility and beautiful scenery, which, in turn, attracted New Westminster and Vancouver residents to relocate to the area and build family homes.

- After New Westminster was established as the Capital City, the surrounding lands were surveyed by the Royal Engineers. The discovery of Burnaby Lake by Robert Burnaby in 1859 soon led to the construction of Douglas Road to Deer Lake in 1861. The completion of the tramline in 1891 renewed interest in the lands around both Burnaby Lake and Deer Lake and soon a group of gentlemen farmers had established strawberry fields and orchards to serve the New Westminster market. These were the most productive and well managed "fruit ranches" in the Fraser Valley. Local strawberries were so admired that they commanded 50 cents more per crate at local markets. One local paper reported that the area appeared as if "an English Village had been taken and planted amidst the grandeur of British Columbia scenery."

- Burnaby's first non-Native settler, William Holmes, selected land near the Brunette River on which to build his home in 1860. From this beginning, the neighbourhood of Burquitlam developed, fostered by its proximity to the North Road trail which linked it to New Westminster. In 1906, the Burquitlam Post Office opened and in 1910 the Hamilton Road school opened to serve the growing population of children in the area.

- Hugh MacRoberts, a farmer on Sea Island in Richmond, constructed a trail (which later became Marine Drive) to New Westminster in 1862 in order to bring his produce to market. The land along the Fraser River had been used as cranberry bogs and the fertile soil allowed opportunities for hay, root crops and other agricultural endeavours. The settlement grew around the River Road and by 1905 the Dundonald School opened, followed three years later by the Fraser Arm Post Office.

- Jeremiah "Jerry" Rogers (b. 1818, St. Andrews, NB; d 24 Oct 1879, English Bay) began logging at a camp near Jericho Beach in 1865 (the name Jericho may be a corruption of “Jerry’s Cove.”) His operation, which cleared much of what is now Kitsilano, provided spars for sailing ships and logs for Edward Stamp's mill on Burrard Inlet. In the 1870s, he became one of the first logging operators in Burnaby, establishing a camp in South Burnaby in about 1870 at Woolard Creek (Byrne Creek), where he cut timber for ship masts. Rogers constructed a ditch to facilitate the movement of the large trees. It is likely a series of locks were installed in the ditch to trap the waters of the Fraser River when the tides were high, and to trap water flowing from Woolard Creek. When the locks were released, the logs could more easily make their way to the Fraser River. A similar system of locks was used west of Jerry Rogers' Ditch, at Byrne's logging ditch constructed by Peter Byrne in 1893.

- In peak years, upwards of 100 million salmon would swim up the Fraser River - the largest salmon-bearing river in the world. In August and September sockeye salmon would be pursued by almost 1000 canoes of fishers from all over the coast; people from Sechelt, Nanaimo, Cowichan, Saanich, Lummi Island, Skagit, Snohomish, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh. The estimated peak year sockeye salmon run was 60 million and the estimated yearly consumption by Natives was at least 4 million. In 1808, Simon Fraser became the first known European to travel in the Lower Fraser River.

- On December 13, 1912, The British Columbian Weekly described the Vancouver Heights neighbourhood as follows: "The northern portion of the municipality in the vicinity of Boundary Road has during the past three years made tremendous strides towards settlement. At that time Mr. James Herd and Mr. Peters were the only residents of the district...Soon, however, the timber was removed, streets laid out and other conveniences such as water, light and transportation provided... The school population of the district has increased so rapidly that the school has been enlarged twice this year and is at the present time inadequate. About 200 children are attending now. There are three churches in the district and one mission...At present time there are two large blocks containing six stores..."

- Real estate ventures became quite active in the Vancouver Heights and Capitol Hill areas of Burnaby by 1908. Brokerage firms and agents who bought large tracts, subdivided and sold them off in parcels and by 1909 had adopted the name "Capitol Hill" to describe Burnaby's newest neighbourhood. In his book, History of Burnaby and Vicinity," historian George Green explains that the term "Capitol Hill" was taken from ancient Rome where the civic centre was built upon the Capitoline Hill, one of the seven hills of the eternal city. In 1909, the Scott Brokerage Company advertised the sale of lots on Capitol Hill, calling it "one of Vancouver's swellest suburbs."

Only a few years ago a dense forest covered this area and the settlers were few and some distance apart. After the war working men began to enter the Lochdale woods in quest of cheap home-sites. Today there are more than 400 residents in the district who combine to make a happy contented industrious community living on the edge of a big city yet enjoying the life offered by the country...The Community Hall is the centre of all social activities. Dances, concerts and other forms of entertainment are all there...Curtis Street runs from Sperling Avenue up to the hill, locally known as Hastings Grove. - Burnaby North and Burnaby South were the first high schools built in the City. Before the high school opened, Burnaby students had to travel to Vancouver if they wished to pursue education beyond an elementary level. In 1921, arrangements were made to use the basement of the Presbyterian Church for instruction of local students. By 1922 the Burnaby North High School opened at its first permanent location (4375 Pandora Street - which is now Rosser Elementary). In 1945, the Willingdon Avenue site was built and was used until a new building was constructed in 1961 on Hammarskjold Drive. From 1962, the school was used as Burnaby Heights Junior High school, but it closed in 1982 and the junior high students went to the new Burnaby North on Hammarskjold.

- During the height of the real estate boom between 1909 and 1913, Vancouver developer Frederick Munson plotted the subdivision of more than 150 acres of land on Curtis Street east of Sperling Avenue, on the newly logged slopes of remote Burnaby Mountain. Burnaby opened up Curtis Street to facilitate access to Hastings Grove and Munson agreed to pay one-third of the cost but never did. He also paid only $1000.00 down on the agreed price of the land. When he failed to make further payments, the mortgage holders foreclosed and re-sold the properties. People who had bought lots from Munson lost not only the land they though they owned, but also the money they had paid for it. Hastings Grove was a disaster. The converted automobile - which served as the bus - stopped running. The few houses and most of the lots reverted to the Municipality because of non-payment of taxes and are now part of Burnaby Mountain Park. The only remaining building is the old Hastings Grove Store which still stands as an apartment building.

- The original Barnet mill burned down in 1909 after a dramatic explosion in the boiler house. The company rebuilt a new plant, considered a model of mill construction. The company's timber was towed down the Pacific in huge rafts containing about 400,000 to 500,000 board feet. Mill capacity during a 10-hour day was 150,000 board feet with an amazing annual output of 50 million feet.

- This site was a top secret site where 460 men worked on the assembly of five submarines for the Russian Navy during World War I. The Seattle contractor was forbidden from doing the work in the US because of American neutrality regulations and he set up the secret plant here without the knowledge of the Canadian Government.

- Between 1905 and 1924, the Broadview neighbourhood in Burnaby was settled by almost 100 families who saw the advantage of living in an area that was served by two railway lines - the B.C. Electric Railway and the Great Northern Railway. Touted as being only a 20 minute car ride to the city centre, this neighbourhood expanded during the early 1920s with the promise of a new direct access road to the city being built by the Great Northern Railway company and new blocks being opened up on two government reserves adjoining it.

- In 1906, Maxwell Smith, President of the Central Park Farmer's Institute gave a speech in which he commented on the growth of this district and its ideal location during the boom years after 1905. He said: "Central Park is destined to become the epicentre of a great commercial metropolis, when Vancouver and New Westminster will have both expanded and prospered until they meet and fill up the intervening distances with residences of a new city, greater than few can now imagine, even in their wildest flights of fancy...we are proud of the two cities that lie on either side of us but they are, but mere hamlets compared with the great city that is to be on this peninsula. The time is coming when there will be one vast city, one commercial metropolis, and Central Park will be the heart of it."

- Along with logging and sawmills, Burnaby became known as a prime agricultural area and the Burnaby Lake Neighbourhood saw the development of many vegetable and fruit farms. Growers in the Burnaby and Deer Lake districts took their produce to the tram line on Edmonds Street and shipped it to markets in New Westminster and Vancouver on a specially designed interurban freight car that was open-sided for easy loading. The car's canvas curtains which sometimes came loose and flapped like wings in the wind led people to dub it "the flying dutchman." Most Burnaby fruit and vegetable growers depended on seasonal Chinese work forces and other local Chinese farm residents to oversee operations; these workers being recruited from New Westminsters' Asian community. Besides being good farmers, Burnaby Lake's early residents fostered a strong sense of community. Both L. Claude Hill and his brother Bernard were elected to Burnaby Municipal council and Bernard was the one who knocked on doors to find enough children to meet the qualifications for establishing a school in the district.

- In 1906 C.T. Piper and Alfred Wiggs built a sawmill at the foot of what is now Piper Avenue along the north shore of Burnaby Lake. These operations and the proximity of the Great Northern Railway encourage settlers to move into this area and among them were Colonel and Mrs. James Ward. They were authorized to open a post office here and Mrs. Ward named it 'Lozells' after the Anglican parish to which she had been a member in Birmingham, England.

- In 1921, the pamphlet "Beautiful Burnaby" was produced and it described the Burquitlam neighbourhood as such: "No part of Burnaby has more consistently laboured to advance its prosperity than Burquitlam. Enterprise and intelligence has hewn homes from the forest and developed land into highly productive gardens and poultry ranches. Burquitlam is the growing suburb to the north of the City of New Westminster. It is reached by the Sapperton carline direct from Edmonds being only a few minutes ride from New Westminster market. It is also served by the B.C.E.R. Burnaby Lake line and adjoins on the best golf links in Greater Vancouver."

- From The British Columbian, March 19, 1912: "On the fringe of New Westminster there is…a suburban townsite in Edmonds. During the past eighteen months it has grown and prospered quite phenomenally. It is ideally situated, is in easy communication with New Westminster by two car lines. Its climate is clear and bracing, being exceptionally free from the fogs that are more or less prevalent along the river section and gulf shore...Edmonds, in fact, is one of the finest residential parts of the province. This is fast becoming known and appreciated beyond its borders. Elegant and substantial residences are being erected in various parts, and stores are being put up in convenient localities. The new municipal building is one of the finest in British Columbia for so young a municipality."

- The Buena Vista neighbourhood (so named for its wonderful views) grew out of its proximity to Edmonds and New Westminster and was developed in the period 1911-1912. By the 1950s, the area had been further subdivided and in 1986, Burnaby Municipal Council adopted the Cariboo Hills Development Plan for the neighbourhood to maintain its character as a residential area of the city.

- Alta Vista, named for its high views of the Fraser Valley, rapidly grew during the period 1910-1912, seeing its settlement jump from about a dozen buildings in 1910 to about four hundred by the end of 1912. Home-seekers were attracted to its location just a short walk from the B.C.E.R. line at Royal Oak and Highland Park and easily accessible to both New Westminster and Vancouver.

- Fraser Arm - so named because there the tram crossed Gilley Avenue, running down to the North Arm of the Fraser River - was served by the River Road [Marine Drive] which traversed the municipality of Burnaby, leading to both New Westminster and Vancouver. This area did not experience a real estate boom during the 1909-1913 as did many other Burnaby neighbourhoods - in fact, by 1912, only three homes had been built along Riverway as it remained a predominantly agricultural area.

- Burnaby South and Burnaby North were Burnaby's first high schools. The first rooms of the school were built in 1922 on the same grounds as the Kingsway East Elementary School. In 1940, a two-storey building was erected and additions were made in 1963, 1967 and 1972. Kingsway East closed in 1925 and its buildings were used by the high school for Industrial Arts and Home Economics. In the early 1990s, a new "urban education centre" (Burnaby South/B.C. School for the Deaf) was opened, replacing the old Burnaby South High School.

- The importance of the Chinese-Canadian market gardens in the Big Bend area of Burnaby was described in 1912 by The British Columbian as such: "The Chinese farmers have been for years developing and reaping the benefits of the rich soil. By draining the land with a series of ditches, the [growers] have reduced what was once little better than a cranberry marsh into a richly productive farming area which is one of the most valuable assets to...Burnaby." Many Chinese-Canadian families who had for years leased their farms began to purchase land in the 1950s and cultivated small parcels of up to 10 acres for growing assorted Canadian and Chinese vegetables for sale - either wholesale or in the market's roadside stands on Marine Drive, frequented by many loyal Burnaby customers.

- According to the 1911 December 26 edition of The British Columbian: Optimism is the word that applies to the whole community of East Burnaby. In the clearing and building line, many fine new homes are being erected...Real estate values have advanced with the times, and a notable feature is the number of better-class houses that are being built in this locality, which proves that East Burnaby is becoming very much alive and elevated.

- Up until the 1970s, this neighbourhood was known as Vancouver Heights. When a new park was created during that decade and named "Burnaby Heights Park," the name was gradually adopted by newcomers to the area. Today, you will hear residents refer to their neighbourhood as Burnaby Heights, Vancouver Heights, or just "The Heights." Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the commercial district in this neighbourhood continued to grow and a Retail Merchants Association was formed which later became known as the Heights Merchants Association. The neighbourhood still retains a residential neighbourhood characteristic with an increasing number of apartment buildings and multi-family units being built over the past 20 years.

- Between 1955 and 2001, the Brentwood Neighbourhood developed into one of Burnaby's four official Town Centres. The Brentwood Town Centre serves the north-west sector of the Municipality, providing facilities such as commercial developments - of which the Brentwood Mall is the most significant. Under Burnaby's Residential Development Framework adopted by Council in 1981, the Town Centre also incorporated a full range of multi-housing types and forms in close relationship with their commercial facilities. In 1996, the City adopted the Brentwood Town Centre Development Plant to solidify the area as a focus of higher-density and higher-intensity residential and commercial opportunities, public transit and supporting leisure facilities.

- By the 1970s, the Sperling-Broadway Neighbourhood was characterised as one of the Municipality's fastest growing residential areas. In 1980, it was estimated that slightly less than half of the homes were single-family residences, while the remaining development was taking the form of townhouse and high-rise apartments. The emphasis shifted back to single family housing during the construction of planned subdivisions such as the Camrose subdivision in the 1980s and the area remains primarily residential in nature. The neighbourhood is well-served by park facilities and is also home to the Burnaby Mountain Golf Course.

Although a commercial zone developed along Sperling and Hastings, single-family, duplex and multi-family homes were the primary buildings in the area. Basement suites and student accommodation also flourished in this neighbourhood after the creation of Simon Fraser University on Burnaby Mountain.

- Burnaby Mountain had been dedicated as park in 1942, however the original park boundaries were reconsidered in 1952 with the development of the Trans Mountain Pipeline. Although the boundaries were adjusted to accommodate this project, significant conservation and park lands were left untouched. When, in 1962, the government of British Columbia determined the need for additional post-secondary facilities, Burnaby Mountain was chosen as the site for the new Simon Fraser University which opened in 1965. As early as 1964, the idea of establishing a townsite around the university had been discussed by Burnaby, but it was not until the mid-1990s that the idea came to fruition and by the early 2000s, a new housing development know as the UniverCity took shape on the mountain adjacent to the university.

- When Simon Fraser University opened in 1965, approximately sixteen industrial properties had been developed in the Lake City Industrial Park. In addition, significant tracts of land in the western portion had been pre-cleared and graded in anticipation of additional development, while most of the eastern half remained forested. Some of the early companies to locate in the area were Nabob Foods, Volkswagen Canada, British Columbia Television Broadcasting, Simpson Sears, and H.Y. Louie Company Limited. Both Imperial Oil and Shell Oil established petroleum storage and distribution facilities in the area. Initially a heavy industrial area, by 1979, single family neighbourhoods south of Lougheed Highway and west of Eagle Creek had been largely developed. By the mid1980's, the Burnaby 200 multi-family development along Forest Grove Drive had also been completed.

The BCIT site was built in the early 1960s, shortly after the Burnaby Municipal Hall was located on Canada Way near Deer Lake in 1956. The construction of the Municipal Hall at this location fostered the creation of an administrative and business centre adjacent to the park, while the northern and central areas of the neighbourhood retained their primarily residential character.

- The Windsor Neighbourhood comprises a number of different districts with different characteristics. To the north, stretching to the border of the Deer Lake Park, is the primarily residential area that was developed after the building boom of the 1950s and now consists of a mix of single-family and multi-family housing. To the south, from Kingsway to the Skytrain line, an industrial area was maintained along with a significant commercial corridor along Kingsway. In recent years, the growth and development of this area has been guided by the Royal Oak Community Plan adopted by Council in 1999.
