- History
- Edwin Ramsey came to Canada from Scotland when he was about 11 years old. He was given farmland and quickly became an avid farmer. Edwin Ramsey married Annie Plummer circa 1893. This was Annie Plummer’s second marriage. In the early years of their marriage, Edwin and Annie lived in Orange Ridge, Manitoba and operated a store and post office. Their first child, Queenie, was born November 11, 1895. Albert Edwin "Bert" Ramsey was born January 27, 1898. Eva Lilian Ramsey was born January 24, 1900. Jessica “Jessie” Ramsey was born two years later. The Ramseys then headed to New Westminster. By 1905 they had bought "the Park” (what is now Robert Burnaby Park) from Mr. Wintermute for $4,000 cash. They moved into a large house already constructed on the property. The park was full of apple trees, a garden, pigs, two cows, horses and a buggy and wagon with a barn near the second street entrance. By now, the eldest, Queenie was enrolled at Burnaby’s first school. Twins Ernest “Ernie” and Dorothy “Doll” were born in 1906. Eva started at Edmonds School in 1908 when it was just built. Her siblings Queenie, Bert, Jeanie, Ernie and Doll all attended the school as well. In 1909 the Ramseys sold the park to Mr. Vidal of New Westminster and his syndicate along with a portable mill to Pemberton & Sons and received enough money to buy six lots on 12th Avenue where they built a large house. Gordon “Gord” Ramsey was born in that house in 1909. Soon after, they sold the house and moved to Blaine for six months, then on to Bellingham where they remained until Edwin and Annie divorced in 1914. Edwin moved alone to Alberta and Annie moved back to Burnaby with their children. Bert began attending the University of British Columbia where he studied to become a doctor. He joined the army in May of 1916, went to war and was killed at Vimy Ridge on April 12, 1917 at the age of 19. As Mr. Vital and his syndicate were to go to war as captains, Mr. Vital gave up the park property and Annie was able to take it back. Unfortunately, the new initiative of taxing wild lands caused Annie to lose the park property through tax sale proceedings. She then entered into a lease agreement with Burnaby which allowed her to stay on at "the Park." With twelve years of piano training, Annie was considered a talented musician and played the piano at St. Alban’s church for many years. Annie Ramsey died on October 3, 1926. Jessica, Dorothy and Queenie all moved to the United States. Gordon married a woman named Irene. Eva married William “Bill” Anderson at the St. Stephen’s Church in New Westminster on July 7, 1919. She and Bill were the first couple to marry there. They held their wedding reception at “the Park.” In 1921, Bill and Eva bought a home at 723 Second Street for $2450. They had one daughter, Dorothy "Dot" Anderson. Dot later married Robert V. “Bob” Douglas. Eva died in 1995.

- Ration Book was created by the Government of Canada in the 1940s during World War II. The ration book was used by donor during the Second World War. Even though the ration book states that the donor was living in New Westminster, the address was actually located in Burnaby.

- History
- Frederick "Fred" Sullivan Ross was born 1887 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He took his apprenticeship in mechanics in Glasgow prior to 1911, following which he immigrated to Canada. During the First World War he returned to Britain and joined the Royal Navy. He was a Chief Petty Officer, working in the engine room of a mine sweeper in the North Atlantic. Margaret Binnie Dougal was in 1884 in Linlithgow, Scotland. She trained as a nurse before emigrating to Canada in 1911. She also returned to Britain during the war years, nursing at Boulogne in France and later Bristol before returning to Vancouver in 1919. She met Fred through a mutual friend, Agnes Rhind. Fred and Margaret married in 1920 in Vancouver, BC. Their first home was in North Vancouver and was where their first child, Ronald, was born. In 1921 or 1922 they moved to the Burnaby Lake area, buying a three-quarter acre parcel of land at 2974 Sprott Street and had two more children, Ian and Alistair. Fred built, owned and operated the Ross Service Station on Douglas Road, established in 1922 or 1923. The station property ran from Douglas Road up to the Douglas Road School’s fence line. After the municipality appropriated part of the property in the 1930s to create a junction for the new Grandview Highway and existing Douglas Road, Fred got permission to build an upper station with two more pumps. The driveway curved down to the station from where Sprott Street now joins Canada Way and rejoined that road near its junction with Douglas Road. At Ross Service Station, Fred did automobile repairs and used the family car, a Studebaker Commander, as a towing vehicle. He created a garden north of the service station on the upper level where he grew chrysanthemums and daises. In the 1930s, Terry Rowley worked at the service station as one of Fred’s assistants. Fred ran the station until he sold it in about 1949. Margaret died December 29, 1969 at the age of 85. Fred died on August 21, 1971 at the age of 84.

- Series consists of records created during the establishment and maintenance of Sister-City relationships between Burnaby and the cities of Kushiro (Japan), Loughborough (England), El Zapotal (El Salvador), Mesa (Arizona), Gatineau (Quebec), Hwaseong (Korea), Zhongshan City (P.R. China). Records include: reports, correspondence, photographs and photograph albums, memoranda, newspaper clippings, speeches, certificates, itineraries, presentation material, invitations, agendas, and minutes. The sister city movement gained momentum in North America after the Second World War with a goal to encourage cooperation between international communities. Burnaby became a part of that movement in the hopes that sister city relationships would create meaningful industrial, economic, educational, and cultural ties between Burnaby citizens and those of other countries. Burnaby’s first sister city was Kushiro, Japan. The formal agreement for the establishment of a sister city relationship between the two communities was signed on September 9, 1965. Following this twinning, the two cities have enjoyed numerous exchanges and visits, the records of which are contained within this series. While the sister city status between Burnaby and Kushiro has endured for over three decades, Burnaby has also maintained shorter-lived relationships with Loughborough, England and El Zapotal, El Salvador. The 1986 twinning with Loughborough was undertaken to recognize the importance of that city to the history of Burnaby in that Loughborough was the ancestral home of Burnaby’s namesake, Robert Burnaby. The twinning between Burnaby and El Zapotal came after Mayor Copeland visited El Salvador in the early 1990s and returned with a desire to see the citizens of Burnaby assist in the rebuilding of that community after a 12-year civil war was brought to an end in 1992. In 1998, Burnaby entered into two North American Sister City relationships with Mesa, Arizona and Gatineau, Quebec, and in 2010, it formulated a sister city agreement with Hwaseong, Korea. In 2011, a further agreement was signed with Zhongshan, China which expanded a previous “friendship” agreement into a Sister City relationship. Series also consists of records related to Friendship Agreements with Taichung (Taiwan), Dongcheng District (formerly Chongwen District) of Beijing (P.R. China), Dongli District of Tianjin, Changshu (P.R. China), and Kunming, Yunnan Province (P.R. China); as well as Memorandums of Understanding with a number of other cities. The records in this series reflect both the actions that led up to the creation of these relationships as well as the numerous cultural, economic and educational exchanges that have been undertaken between the communities over the years.

- History
- Tokio Yamamoto was born May 29, 1923 in Cumberland, BC. to parents Teizo and Matsue (Matsunga) Yamamoto. Tokio was one of nine children born to parents Teizo and Matsue Yamamoto. Tokio and his family were forced into internment during the Second World War. Following the war, the family repatriated to Japan. After returning to Japan, Tokio worked in the Aomori-Ken Region. While living in Japan, Tokio married Yoshino Tamura and the couple had two daughters, Reiko Yamamoto Moizumi and Akemi Yamamoto Jordan. At a young age Yoshino (nee Tamura) Yamamoto learned to make patterns and sew by attending classes at a tailoring school in Aomoir-ken, Japan. In 1952, her husband Tokio Yamamoto bought a sewing machine as a gift. In 1958, Tokio, Yoshino and their two daughters, Reiko and Akemi travelled to Vancouver, British Columbia on the Hikawa-Maru passenger ship. Among Yoshino's possessions was her sewing machine, which was re-assembled when the family moved into their new home in East Vancouver. Yoshino spent many hours sewing and altering clothes for her family, and making cushions, curtains and quilts with her trusty sewing machine. Tokio Yamamoto died in 2012 and Yoshino Yamamoto died in 2016.

- Item consists of a recording of part one in a series of three “Back to the Roots” podcasts about the history of Chinese-Canadian farming in Burnaby and the lower mainland. Part one is titled “A Family Farm”. The podcasts were created by students Rose Wu and Wei Yan Yeong from the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at the University of British Columbia Faculty and while student interns at Burnaby Village Museum. In this series the students connect their knowledge of food systems to their shared Chinese heritage in order to discover how Chinese Canadian history is rooted in their local food systems. 00:00-02:21 The podcast opens with Wei Yan Yeong and Rose Wu introducing themselves and their topic- the Chinese Canadian experience in Burnaby and the people who have made important contributions to the city’s development. “A Family Farm” talks about Chinese-owned businesses which are family run. “The family-oriented nature of Chinese-owned businesses also extend to many of the early (and current) Chinese-owned farms in the Burnaby Big Bend area. When Chinese men first began farming in BC in the 1860s, a lot of them worked as labourers because they weren’t allowed to own land. After World War II many of these farmers were allowed to purchase lots, thanks to the Veterans Land Grant. These grants allowed returning veterans to purchase small parcels of land with government loans. Eventually, these men would start families on the farm, and many Chinese-owned farms became family-operated businesses where every member, male, female, child, and extended relatives were enlisted to work the grounds. And it was hard work, often from dawn to dusk, 6-7 days a week.” 02:23 – 07:50 This portion includes excerpts from Oral History interview with Josephine Chow (nee Hong) of Hop On Farms in the Burnaby Big Bend area. The interview was conducted by Burnaby Village Museum researcher Denise Fong. Josephine recalls growing up on the family farm with her six siblings. She tells of how the family pulled together money to purchase twelve acres along Marine Drive in 1951, her family’s background, daily life on the farm , responsibilities on the farm for her and her siblings and of how her mother had to balance working on the farm and providing for a family of ten to twelve people. 07:51 – 08:10 In this portion, hosts comment and reflect on their own experiences. “While it’s likely that a lot of this was done out of necessity and not being able to afford additional paid labourers, having grown up in Chinese households ourselves, we can definitely understand the rationale for these family-operated businesses and how it connects back to the Chinese understanding of family and kinship.” 08:11 – 09:06 In this portion, Rose and Wei provide information on the roots of the Chinese character for family “jia” in mandarin or “gah” in Cantonese. They explain that the term family is composed of two parts: the upper element is like a roof, symbolizing shelter, and the bottom part represents a pig which symbolizes food, whereby the Chinese character for family represents that of a farm. They provide a quote from the writings of Francois de Martin-Donos “In ancient China, the farm is an enterprise, a shelter that insures one food and work. The farm is a place to rely on, but in return, needs to be maintained, including a set of responsibilities. In other words, “family” is the insurance of a stable life.” 09:07 – 10:27 In this portion, the hosts speak about how traditional Chinese thought is heavily influenced by the teachings of Confucius and Confucius philosophy. They explain how Confucius emphasized five sets of human relationships that form the basis for society: ruler and minister, husband and wife, parents and child, sibling and sibling, friend and friend. Of these five, three are familial relationships also known as Filial piety – the respect and care for one’s familial superiors (such as parents, elders, and ancestors). They speak of how this is one of Confucianism’s main teachings and in this respect caring for family members is seen as a moral obligation. In China housing arrangements are in the form of siheyuan”s — a type of residence that featured a courtyard surrounded on all four sides with buildings. These traditionally housed one large extended family if they were wealthy enough. 10:28 – 13:08 In this portion, hosts provide further information on Josephine Chow’s family experience working and living on the “Hop On” family farm through the decades. An excerpt from the interview with Josephine Chow conducted by Denise Fong is included. - History
- Flossie Maude Parsons (nee Smith) was born to George Henry Smith, a farm labourer, and Harriet Ann Savage on February 13, 1896 in Ealing, England. She immigrated to Canada with some of her family members in the early 1920s. They lived in Winnipeg for a few years as an older brother had settled there in 1912. She married Herbert Russell Parsons on June 23, 1928. They first lived in Vancouver and finally bought a home at 7091 Jubilee Avenue, South Burnaby in the early 1930s. In 1943, Flossie was certified in Home Nursing. Herbert Parsons was active during the Second World War as a volunteer for Civil Defence in Burnaby and worked as a salesman for Woodwards. The couple had no children. Herbert passed away on May 23rd, 1957 (age 84) and Flossie passed away on April 6, 1996 (age 100).
