Scope and Content: Item consists of a handwritten air mail letter from Sergeant Colin Rhodes Fox of the Royal Canadian Artillery Service to Marianne "May" Bateman while serving overseas during World War II. Colin Fox served in the 13th Canadian Field Regiment, 44th Canadian Field Battery. Colin is writing from hospital after being wounded while laying communication cable on the Normandy beachhead on June 8, 1944 (two days after D-Day). Colin thanks May for her letters; tells of how he's been convalescing in bed for twenty days with damage to one of his lungs and how he and others in the ward have been listening to radio shows on a Red Cross radio.

Object History: Donor states that he obtained the kit in 1949 after it became obsolete at his work, the Shell Marine Gas Station in New Westminster.

Scope and Content: Photograph of a class sitting at their desks. The desks are attached to the backs of the chairs. The name of the class and school is unknown. An earlier catalogue record conjectures it is probably a Burnaby school, possibly Gilmore Avenue School. The inscription in pencil of the date 1920 is of unknown origin, but the clothing styles of the students indicate this date is probably close to being correct. There are 10 girls and 22 boys in the class, unsegregated in seating arrangement. The boys are wearing dark turtle neck sweaters, some with a dark sports jacket over the sweater. The boys' hair is moppish, some parted, most not. The girls are wearing dresses (little detail visible) and long hair, some with a ribbon on top and pulled back. A black board on the right side of the students has a large map of South America drawn on it. A Red Cross Nurse's picture is above this board. The alphabet is written in large block capitals in chalk across the top of the rear blackboard. Queen Mary's picture is above this board. A female teacher is standing beneath Queen Mary. The dangling lights have conical shades. Inscribed on the negative, lower left of the print: "267." Annotations in pencil read, "1920" (front of photo, upper right) and "Mr. Tom Browning" (back of photo).

Scope and Content: Subseries consists of textual records and photographs that were collected by Lillian Evelyn Salisbury during her lifetime as a citizen of Burnaby. Records document historical sites and events in and related to Burnaby, as well as various heritage groups and events in British Columbia. Included in this subseries are the publication and papers related to "Metrotown - Burnaby Heritage Resource Inventory."

History: Lillian Evelyn "Evelyn" Salisbury was born in 1915 and moved to Burnaby in 1945. She had three children with her husband Fred: Gordon, Lorne, and Karen. While living in Burnaby, she worked with the Red Cross blood donor clinic and the Burnaby Health Unit. In 1958, she participated in the Greater Vancouver Health League’s campaign for fluoridation as the Health Chairman of the Burnaby Parent-Teacher Council. Evelyn Salisbury served two-year terms as secretary, vice-president and president of the Burnaby Historical Society and spearheaded a 1985 project to record Burnaby’s historical inventory of churches, schools, industries, homes and other pre-1930 buildings. When the building of Metrotown shopping centre threatened to clear historic homes in Central Park area, the Society produced a record of the historic buildings in the area. In 1988, as president of the Burnaby Historical Society, she convinced City of Burnaby aldermen to set up a heritage advisory committee. She was appointed to the Burnaby Centennial Committee the next year and in 1990 she was named Citizen of the Year by the Burnaby City Council. During her lifetime, Evelyn Salisbury endeavoured to collect papers of historical significance. She died in 1991.
