Object History
Salvation Army Guide uniform dress belonging to Virginia Blake, early 1960s. From the 6th Vancouver Salvation Army Guides on Hastings Street. Salvation Army was affiliated with Girl Guides (1937) of Canada until 1998. Worn with brown leather belt, beret, folded triangular company tie. The three white stripes on the right breast pocket indicate that wearer was a company leader. The more stripes you had, the higher your rank. A single white stripe, sewn down the center of the pocket, would have indicated that she was a patrol seconder. Two stripes would indicate that she was a patrol leader. White adhesive tape was used so that the guider didn’t have to unstitch and re-sew the stripes as they gained rank.

hunting bow

HV980.2.132
Description
Small maple hunting bow. A leather thong is tied to one end of the bow. It is loose at the other end, although, there is a knot that could slip over the bow. There are traces of green paint on the wood. Interior Salish: Nlaka’pamux: Spuzzum First Nation
Object History
Homer Barnett writes about Coast Salish bows: “the main hunting bow did not differ from the one used in fighting. It was made of yellow cedar root when this wood could be obtained from the mountains. The trunk wood was also used. An alternative was yew. Inferior bows for ducks and other birds were made from hardhack. Bows were about three or four feet long/ The were rather flat and were about the breadth of three fingers at the widest parts on either side of the grip, which was constricted and slightly thicker. They tapered from the centre towards both ends. The ends were curved away from the holder for a better string purchase (1955:100)
Plant fibres were seldom made into bow strings. More common were two-ply cords of sinew or gut. Atypically, a skin thong was used (1955:101).
Marks/Labels
There is writing inscribed on the inside of the bow, which reads: “1925" "Made for me by Spuzzum chief.”

Photograph of an L shaped building with a flat front. Letters on the front of the store read, "Ontario Liquor Store / Grocery / Tailor." Four men are standing near the store on the boardwalk, three boys are sitting, and a woman is standing on the boardwalk leaning against the fence on the far left. As is normal for most tintypes, the image appears reversed, left to right. (Few tintype cameras included a mirror or prism that made the image appear 'right way round').

These smaller phonographs were prised for their portability, but not for the loudness of their sound. These small machines were very popular after the First World War. The ability to play records anywhere had made them popular gifts for solders They remained popular through the 1920s. The Sonata is designed to play 10 inch, 78 RPM records. There is no need for a speed adjustment because 78 RPM was the standard speed for disks.
