Heritage Value
Robert McLennan was the vice-president of the prominent Vancouver hardware firm of McLennan, McFeely & Company, popularly known as Mc.& Mc. Born in Pictou, Nova Scotia in 1861, Robert McLennan entered the hardware business at age fifteen. The West was an irresistible lure, and after he moved to Victoria in 1884, he took on a friend, Edward J. McFeely, as a business partner. Their business was a success and they soon opened a branch in the rapidly-developing new city of Vancouver. In 1898, Robert went to Dawson, where he opened a branch operation and served as mayor for one year in 1903. He returned to Vancouver in 1904, and as the business expanded, E.G. Prior was taken on as partner. In addition to his business pursuits, the public-spirited McLennan served on many boards and committees. In 1887, Robert returned to Nova Scotia where he married Bessie Archibald McKenzie. They had nine children, one of whom was born in Dawson. Robert died in 1927, and Bessie died in 1941. This grand residence was one of the first to be built in the Vancouver Heights subdivision, and its spectacular location retains panoramic views of Burrard Inlet and the North Shore. This house was undoubtedly designed by a local architect as it is an excellent example of the British Arts and Crafts style, with a shingled exterior, half-timbered gables and prominent brick chimneys. Although the west verandah has been enclosed and the windows altered, the house has been well maintained. Although owned by the McLennans, it may have been an investment property, as they lived for many years at a Vancouver address. In 1926, the house was sold to Vancouver Medical Health Officer, F.T. Underhill.

Notes
There are two versions of the book: English and Simplified Chinese (left, below) and the other in English and Traditional Chinese (right, below).
From the late 1800s to the present day, Chinese Canadians have made Burnaby into a more vibrant and livable city. Rooted: Chinese Canadian Stories in Burnaby brings together a collection of diverse stories and photographs from the community, celebrating the legacy and contributions of Burnaby’s Chinese Canadian community spanning over a century. This coffee-table book features oral histories and interviews with descendants of multigenerational family farms, green grocers, corner stores, restaurants, and places of worship. Also included are archival research and community perspectives on anti-Asian racism, community activism, courage, and resilience.
The publication has been timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the introduction of the Chinese Exclusion Act by the Government of Canada in 1923. This federal legislation followed decades of discriminatory legislation by Canada’s federal, provincial and municipal governments that targeted Chinese Canadians by limiting opportunities to live, work and raise families in Canada. The Chinese Exclusion Act banned almost all migration from China and remained in place until 1947. Publishing this book in 2023 is an effort by the City of Burnaby to recognize the impact of discriminatory legislation on Chinese Canadians in our community, including discriminatory bylaws and practices implemented by Burnaby’s early municipal government.
Edited by Denise Fong (Lead Researcher), Jane Lemke (Burnaby Village Museum Curator) and Lisa Codd (City of Burnaby Heritage Planner).

Scope and Content
Collection consists of photographs of train locomotive "Old Curly" along with photographs of other locomotives. Photographs of "Old Curly" were taken during it's early logging days and when it was moved back to Vancouver. Photographs were maintained and collected by William F. Surgenor and later by his grandson Bill Robinson.
History
William F. Surgenor was born in Ireland in 1877 and in 1905 William Surgenor immigrated to British Columbia. In 1912, William Surgenor married Bessie Duncan in Vancouver. William worked as a railway locomotive engineer and was toted in the Vancouver Sun as a legend among railroaders in British Columbia. His first railway job as train engineer in British Columbia was aboard the locomotive named "Old Curly". William Surgenor worked on the engine during it's logging service up Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast and before it was moved back to Vancouver around 1927. William and Bessie Surgenor had four children; William George "Tyke", Earl Almer, Alice Margrete (Robinson) and Robert. William and Bessie Surgenor's eldest son William "Tyke" Surgenor also worked on the railway as a fireman and brakeman. William William F. Surgenor died in 1965. The locomotive engine "Old Curly" was built in San Francisco in 1879 and was used during the building of the harbour sea wall. It was likley built by Marshutz & Cantrell. It was acquired by Andrew Onderdonk in 1881 to use during construction of the Fraser Canyon section of the Canadian Pacific Railroad (CPR). The locomotive was the first logging locomotive in this area. It was later used on the section from Savona Ferry to Kamloops. The locomotive was layed up in 1887 and not used for several years until it was purchased by the British Columbia Timber and Trading Company (BCTTC) for use on their logging railway in Surrey. In the early 1900s the engine was shifted from Surrey to the company operations north of Powell River and was a familiar sight carrying logs from Hastings Mill. It was brought back to Vancouver, in a damaged condition and stored on BCTTC property around 1927, was acquired by the CPR and restored as a 50th Anniversary Project in 1930. It was displayed at the Pacific National Exhibition grounds until the 1973 when it was brought to Heritage Village (later Burnaby Village Museum) and restored again.
