- Burnaby South and Burnaby North were Burnaby's first high schools. The first rooms of the school were built in 1922 on the same grounds as the Kingsway East Elementary School. In 1940, a two-storey building was erected and additions were made in 1963, 1967 and 1972. Kingsway East closed in 1925 and its buildings were used by the high school for Industrial Arts and Home Economics. In the early 1990s, a new "urban education centre" (Burnaby South/B.C. School for the Deaf) was opened, replacing the old Burnaby South High School.

- In 1921, the pamphlet "Beautiful Burnaby" was produced and it described the Burquitlam neighbourhood as such: "No part of Burnaby has more consistently laboured to advance its prosperity than Burquitlam. Enterprise and intelligence has hewn homes from the forest and developed land into highly productive gardens and poultry ranches. Burquitlam is the growing suburb to the north of the City of New Westminster. It is reached by the Sapperton carline direct from Edmonds being only a few minutes ride from New Westminster market. It is also served by the B.C.E.R. Burnaby Lake line and adjoins on the best golf links in Greater Vancouver."

- The increasing density of housing around the Lougheed Shopping Centre area resulted in a spike in enrolment at Lyndhurst Elementary School. As a result, in 1965, Cameron Road Elementary was built to alleviate overcrowding issues. The school opened with 151 pupils. The school was expanded in 1969 when three classrooms were added and again in 1971 when eights more rooms and a library were built.

- Real estate ventures became quite active in the Vancouver Heights and Capitol Hill areas of Burnaby by 1908. Brokerage firms and agents who bought large tracts, subdivided and sold them off in parcels and by 1909 had adopted the name "Capitol Hill" to describe Burnaby's newest neighbourhood. In his book, History of Burnaby and Vicinity," historian George Green explains that the term "Capitol Hill" was taken from ancient Rome where the civic centre was built upon the Capitoline Hill, one of the seven hills of the eternal city. In 1909, the Scott Brokerage Company advertised the sale of lots on Capitol Hill, calling it "one of Vancouver's swellest suburbs."

- By 1961, three new elementary schools had been built in the northeast section of Burnaby - Armstrong, Seaforth, and Lyndhurst. With growing enrolment at each, too many students were required to travel a farther distance to attend Edmonds Junior High School. As a result, the Cariboo Hill Secondary School was built in 1961 and opened with 410 students. Its peak enrolment was during the 1974 school year when over 1100 students attended. Additions to the school were made in 1969, 1971 and 1974.

- The Cascade-Schou neighbourhood, sometimes referred to as the Cascade Heights area, includes both the Burnaby General Hospital site, the Discovery Park facilities and is bordered on its eastern boundary by BCIT. Despite these health and science developments, the neighbourhood can still be considered to be a residential community. The housing stock includes single family homes as well as newer multi-family residences that developed throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

- Central Park was one of the first and fastest-growing communities in Burnaby. Located along the electric tram line and the Vancouver Road (Kingsway), it was also chosen for a government settlement project referred to as the Central Park Small Holdings. The lands held by the Provincial Government were subdivided and sold around 1894 and by 1899 the settlement was large enough to warrant the construction of an Anglican Church there.

- In 1906, Maxwell Smith, President of the Central Park Farmer's Institute gave a speech in which he commented on the growth of this district and its ideal location during the boom years after 1905. He said: "Central Park is destined to become the epicentre of a great commercial metropolis, when Vancouver and New Westminster will have both expanded and prospered until they meet and fill up the intervening distances with residences of a new city, greater than few can now imagine, even in their wildest flights of fancy...we are proud of the two cities that lie on either side of us but they are, but mere hamlets compared with the great city that is to be on this peninsula. The time is coming when there will be one vast city, one commercial metropolis, and Central Park will be the heart of it."

- Chaffey-Burke Elementary School was built in 1963 and deviated slightly from the typical one-storey buildings that had been the standard for elementary schools in Burnaby since World War Two. At Chaffey-Burke, the restriction of space resulted in a second story level because of the slope. Additions to the building were made in 1964, 1968 and 1969.

- Confederation Park school was built in 1965 to alleviate increased enrolments in Rosser Avenue and Capitol Hill schools. All elementary schools built in Burnaby in the post-war period share similar features and Confederation Park is no exception. Built low to the ground with no basement, no second stories and no high stairways, the structures could be easily added to as needed as the classrooms were built in a line.

- The Douglas-Gilpin Neighbourhood developed into a diverse area incorporating residential, business, educational and park districts in the period after 1955. The BCIT site was built in the early 1960s, shortly after the Burnaby Municipal Hall was located on Canada Way near Deer Lake in 1956. The construction of the Municipal Hall at this location fostered the creation of an administrative and business centre adjacent to the park, while the northern and central areas of the neighbourhood retained their primarily residential character.

- This school was the fifth to open in Burnaby and was initially known as Lake View School. In 1913, names of Burnaby Schools were changed to reflect their location and thus Lake View became Douglas Road. The first building on the site was torn down in the 1950s but the main building, which was constructed in 1928, remains although it had additions and renovations done in 1950, 1954, 1960, 1961, 1967 and 1973.

- Heritage Value
- The Baldwin House is valued as a prime example of Burnaby’s post-Second World War modern heritage and progressive architectural style, as well as for its personal connections to internationally-acclaimed architect, Arthur Erickson. Inspired by the modern domestic idiom established earlier in the twentieth century by Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Neutra, Erickson conceived his architecture as responding directly to the site. A cohesive expression of simple orthogonal lines and ultimate transparency, this structure reduces the idea of post-and-beam West Coast modernism to its most refined elements. A fine example of the evolving talent of Erickson’s earlier work, this house is a landmark modern house in Burnaby and is unique in terms of siting and context. Having just won the 1963 competition for the new Simon Fraser University in Burnaby with his partner, Geoff Massey, and having built fewer than half a dozen homes previously, Erickson’s reputation was growing and his skill as a designer of modern buildings was in great demand. The same year that Erickson/Massey Architects designed SFU, Dr. William Baldwin and his wife, Ruth, personal friends of Erickson, commissioned him to design this house. Erickson was already familiar with the site; as a child he had spent time at this spot when his family visited friends who lived on Deer Lake. Both the Baldwin House and the university were completed in 1965. SFU became internationally famous; the Baldwin House was also considered an architectural success and was recognized in publications of the time. Only a single storey of this two-storey house is visible from the road, as it is built into the hillside in response to its steep site and proximity to Deer Lake. Like many other Erickson designs, this structure was conceived as a pavilion. Constructed of glass and wood, its transparency facilitates visual access to the lake’s edge, acting as an invitation, rather than a barrier, to the landscape. The house blends into the natural surroundings and the site includes other man-made landscape features such as a reflecting pool. As a reaction to the often grey quality of light in the region, Erickson exploits flat planes of water as a source of borrowed light. The refined and purposeful design, transparency, openness of plan and adjacency to the lake combine to give the house a floating appearance at the water's edge. The concept of a floating house set within an accompanying garden was inspired, in part, by the palaces and house boats of Dal Lake in Kashmir and the famed nearby Mughal Gardens. Although Erickson never visited Dal Lake, he travelled extensively throughout India, and specifically mentions the Kashmir reference in relation to this house. There is a rich complexity of other allusions worked into the fabric of the house, unified by a feeling for the conjunction of light, water and land at this special location. Widely renowned as Canada’s most brilliant modern architect, Erickson’s reputation is important to the development and growth of modern architecture in Canada and North America.

- The elements of the Baldwin House that define its character are those materials and details which respond to the location of the building and determine the relation between landscape and building, combining to create a single cohesive site. - ‘Glen-Lyon’ is valued as an excellent example of a privately-owned Edwardian era country estate built at the turn of the nineteenth century. The property retains significant heritage features including the Edwardian era mansion with rustic Arts and Crafts features, and elements of a working agricultural landscape. The property was originally the Royal City Mills logging camp, and in 1900 was purchased by Duncan Campbell McGregor (1853-1929) and Margaret Jane McGregor (1875-1960), who named their estate ‘Glen-Lyon’ after Duncan McGregor’s birthplace in Perthshire, Scotland. The McGregors were active in municipal affairs and social activities, and played a significant role in the early development of Burnaby. Duncan McGregor served as a city councillor from 1909 to 1912 and was elected reeve of Burnaby in 1913. Margaret McGregor was instrumental in the formation and fundraising activities of the Victoria Order of Nurses in Burnaby. Additionally, the site is historically significant for its association with early social welfare and correctional reform. The estate was sold in 1926 to an inter-denominational religious organization called the Home of the Friendless, which used it as their B.C. headquarters. The organization was charged with several cases of abuse and neglect in 1937, after which a Royal Commission was formed that led to new legislation to regulate and license all private welfare institutions. 'Glen-Lyon' was sold to the provincial government, and was dedicated in 1939 by the Lt.-Gov. E.W. Hamber for use as the New Haven Borstal Home for Boys and Youthful Offenders (later renamed the New Haven Correction Centre). The Borstal movement originated in England in the late nineteenth century, as an alternative to sending young offenders and runaways to prisons by providing reformatories that focused on discipline and vocational skill. This site’s role as the first North American institution devoted to the Borstal School philosophy was historic, and influenced corrections programs across Canada. The site retains significant features from its development in 1939 as the Borstal School, including a large gambrel-roofed barn designed by Chief Provincial Architect Henry Whittaker of the Department of Public Works that is the only remaining structure of its kind in Burnaby. Between 1941 and 1945 the mansion housed the Provincial School for the Deaf and Blind when the Borstal School was closed temporarily as a war measure during the Second World War.
