Burnaby Heritage Planning
Heritage Value
Jeremiah "Jerry" Rogers (b. 1818, St. Andrews, NB; d 24 Oct 1879, English Bay) began logging at a camp near Jericho Beach in 1865 (the name Jericho may be a corruption of “Jerry’s Cove.”) His operation, which cleared much of what is now Kitsilano, provided spars for sailing ships and logs for Edward Stamp's mill on Burrard Inlet. In the 1870s, he became one of the first logging operators in Burnaby, establishing a camp in South Burnaby in about 1870 at Woolard Creek (Byrne Creek), where he cut timber for ship masts. Rogers constructed a ditch to facilitate the movement of the large trees. It is likely a series of locks were installed in the ditch to trap the waters of the Fraser River when the tides were high, and to trap water flowing from Woolard Creek. When the locks were released, the logs could more easily make their way to the Fraser River. A similar system of locks was used west of Jerry Rogers' Ditch, at Byrne's logging ditch constructed by Peter Byrne in 1893.

History
William Henry "Henry" Rowling was born February 9, 1826 in Truro, Cornwall, England. His wife, Mary Russell Rowling, was born November 19, 1832 in Strickland, Dorset, England. Their first child, Rosetta Mary "Rose" Rowling, was born August 8, 1858 in Plumstead, Woolwhich, Kent while Henry was in Esquimalt working as a Royal Engineer. The family then moved to New Westminster, and grew larger: James William Russell "Jim" Rowling born October 14, 1862; Henry Soar Rowling was born February 3, 1864; Priscilla Amelia Rowling (later Byrne) was born February 24, 1866; and William Henry Kemp Rowling was born September 2, 1867. The family settled at their farm on the North Arm of the Fraser River in September of 1868. They raised livestock and grew produce on their property for their family, which continued to grow. Thomas George Rowling was born on April 14, 1869 and Elizabeth Jane Russell Rowling was born on August 24, 1847. The Rowling children were raised Presbyterian but Priscilla later converted to Roman Catholicism when she married her husband, Peter Byrne, on May 15, 1892. As young adults, Priscilla and Peter lived on the North Arm, close to Priscilla's parents and youngest sister, Elizabeth. Her brother Henry moved his logging operations near the Byrne residence while James lived in South Vancouver with a family of his own. Their other siblings, Rose and Thomas, had passed away by this time. Peter and Priscilla had six children: Margaret Gladys Byrne, born February 28, 1893; twin daughters Mary and Norah; Kathleen; Ultan Patrick "Pat"; and Elizabeth Laura Byrne (later Cyr). After Henry and Mary Rowlings died in 1906, Elizabeth lived with her sister Priscilla and her nieces and nephews.

The bodice is entirely black, and unadorned except for the buttons and cuffs. The centre front closure has sixteen black jet buttons with a pattern cut into each. At the ends of the somewhat fitted sleeves there are four inch turned back cuffs. At the high neck, there is a mandarin collar. Inside, the bodice is lined with brown cotton. Five bones are evenly spaced along the six back panels and two front panels, with two darts each. The back section of the bodice below the waistline is flared out to fit over a bustle.
Object History
From the estate of Norah Byrne, daughter of Peter Byrne and Priscilla Amelia Rowling Rowling. She later married William Descoteau. Norah Byrne was born in 1896 and based on the era of the dress, it's possible that the dress originally belonged to her mother, Priscilla Amelia Rowling Byrne.
