History
Hazel Eleanora Erickson was born May 21, 1896 in San Francisco California and baptized on December 25, 1899. She was the daughter of Charles Victor Erickson and Amanda Hedvig Erickson of Sweden. Her parents were married in Oakland, California on January 20, 1894. The Erickson family lived in San Francisco, then travelled up the panhandle to Alaska. They travelled throughout British Columbia and by the 1920s made Burnaby their home. Hazel Erickson was living at Gibson's Landing, British Columbia by the time of her marriage on August 31, 1936 to Edwin Peterson. Edwin Peterson was born at sea on October 18, 1884 and became naturalized as a British subject from the Dominion of Canada in 1921. He was an electrician by trade. Hazel resided at the Dania Home in Burnaby for 20 before her death in 1996.

History
The idea of having a "Housewives' Holiday" in South Burnaby originated in February of 1959 when Mary Forsyth attended a Vancouver "Y's" Housewives Holiday and wanted to create one for South Burnaby. Mary Forsyth, Ruth Turner, and Faye Reagh formed a committee in February of 1960 and began planning. Dorothy Turnbull became their treasurer in June. The Housewives' Holiday (a branch of the Clinton-Glenwood Recreation Association) series took place at the then newly renovated Bonsor Hall with events such as "Keep Fit," dancing, Judo, table tennis, and "Living and Learning" as well as guest speakers from places such as the Burnaby School Board, the Metropolitan Health Centre, as well as a nursery offered for children ages three to five. Held each Thursday from 10 am to 2:30 pm, the first session ran from October 6 to December 8 1960.

The Housing Committee was established on November 14, 1966. The Housing Committee advises on protecting and providing affordable housing to Burnaby residents. The Committee was renamed the Housing and Civic Development Committee from 1989 to 1991. After 1991, Council split the Housing and Civic Development Committee into two separate committees: Housing Committee and Civic Development Committee. The Housing Committee was called Community Planning and Housing Committee from 1997 to 2002, and from 2003 to 2005, the Community Planning and Housing Committee was renamed Housing Committee again. In 2006, the Housing Committee was called the Community Development Committee.

The family lived together at 4840 Ardingly Avenue in Burnaby and ran a mushroom farm on their property.

History
James P. Dickson was born in Peeblesshire, Scotland. He came to Manitoba first in 1905 when he was 21 years old, but didn’t move to British Columbia until 1909 when he started the Dickson Brothers Flower Shop and Nursery at 3271 Kingsway. He was a landscape gardener, designing the garden for the Model Burnaby Home at the Royal City Fair in 1920 and designing Burnaby exhibits at the provincial fairs at New Westminster in 1922 and 1923. In 1922 he spoke at a South Vancouver Horticultural Association event; the subject of his talk was “Natural Gardens.” J.P. Dickson was a Burnaby School Board Trustee from 1921 to 1924 (chairman in 1924), 1927 to 1932 (chairman from 1929 to 1932) and 1943 to 1944. In 1925 he was the Labour Party Candidate for Reeve of Burnaby. In 1930 he was president of the May Day committee and officiated at the crowning. J.P. Dickson attended the British Columbia School Trustees Association 26th Annual Convention in Vernon with his family and served as the association’s president from 1932 to 1933. The Dickson family lived at 1519 (later 7770) Nelson Avenue, Burnaby. J.P. had at least one child born about 1913, who attended South Burnaby High School in his teen years. According to “Burnaby: A Proud Century” by Pixie McGeachie James Dickson is also known for his part in creating an unofficial presentation to the King George and Queen Elizabeth during their royal visit in 1939. There was no official stop scheduled for Burnaby, but he persuaded the parade marshal beforehand to slow the procession as it approached Royal Oak (and the Chamber of Commerce built a viewing platform there to attract a large crowd). Dickson encouraged everyone to move in to narrow the width of passage on Kingsway. As the royal car appeared on Royal Oak, the crowd surged forward and blocked its path. A Burnaby girl rushed towards the car waving a bouquet from the Dickson Brothers Flower Shop and an aide-du-camp passed it directly to the Queen “who acknowledged the gift with approval just as the car began to move again.”

History
Jubilee Labor Hall was built with the original purpose of furthering the cause of socialism. The original shareholders, at a share of $5.00 each, built the first hall in 1927. When it burnt down in 1935, the shareholders set out to rebuild. In 1936, the shareholders began renting the hall out to CCF-NDP for a nominal amount, continuing this practice for 35 years. They rented to various other groups in Burnaby and in 1970, when the shareholders decided that it was time to sell the hall, it was purchased by one of these groups: the South Burnaby Elks. After the hall was sold, the remaining balance was used to establish lasting tributes to the original stakeholders and assure the continuous assistance to the cause of socialism for all time.

History
Kathleen Moxham was born in England in 1911. She emigrated from England with her family in 1912, settling first in New Westminster, BC. A year later, they moved to a large house on Sixth Street in Burnaby, BC. Kathleen’s father, Godfrey Moxham, worked as a contractor. He cleared land and built houses, including the Brook House (now the Normanna Rest Home). He died April 8, 1968. Kathleen attended Edmonds Elementary School and later Burnaby South High School. She remembers going on strike with fellow Edmonds Elementary students in 1919 when teachers refused to allow students a spring holiday after so much time had been lost to school closures brought on by the influenza epidemic earlier in the school year.

History
Kay Rorison North was one of the twin daughters of Burnaby carpenter William Rorison and Alma Cropley Rorison. Kay and her twin Evelyn were nine month old when her parents moved them and her two older brothers, Bill and Hugh, to Burnaby in 1922. Her younger brother, John, was not yet born. Kay's grandmother, Matilda Louise Cropley, bought three acres of land on Marine Drive (then called River Road) in South Burnaby and William built two houses on the property: one for his family and, six years later, one for his wife's widowed mother. They built a barn and kept cows, goats and the occasional pig. Her father built wooden toys and board games for the children. Kay went to Riverway West School with thirty-one other children, with grades one to four taught together in the one-room school house. She also attended Sunday school at Riverway mission for eight years and taught it there for another fifteen. Kay and her husband Doug have two daughters.

History
Milton "Milt" Waller Knight was born in Canada circa 1904. His wife Virginia Harrington was born in Duluth, Minnesota circa 1905 and lived most of her life in Canada. Virginia was the first person in British Columbia to breed budgies when she began in 1932 and by 1939 she and her husband created the first crested budgie in the world. By 1942, Virginia was also housing two-hundred and fifty birds at the home of her mother, Mrs. N.M. Herington, which was located at 1775 West 13th Avenue in Burnaby. Milton and Virginia Knight moved into their own home during the war years but, as they could not get their large aviary moved, they were forced to sell their crested birds. When they started up in their birds again, they obtained some of their crested back. By 1948 they had created two types of crested: those with a miniature cockatiel crest and those with a crest like a crested canary. By 1950 they had created the crested in over twelve colours of budgie, including cobalt and yellow-wing greens. The Knights lived together at 3718 Sperling Avenue (later renumbered 5255 Sperling Avenue) and opened Lakeview Aviaries on their one acre property at Deer Lake where Virginia specialized in budgies (Budgerigars) and bred the first albino in Canada and the first crested variety in the world. She kept Java rice birds, button quail, red factor canaries, cockatiels, finches, love birds and twelve varieties of budgerigar. She was a member of the British Columbia Budgerigar and Foreign Bird Society. The facilities at Lakeview Aviaries included two heated aviary cages and three outdoor flight cages constructed by Milton. Lakeview housed the only "hospital" facilities in the city for cage birds, which featured an electrically heated, thermostatically controlled hospital cage. Virginia, known in the community as “the Bird Doctor” nursed many sick birds back to health free of charge for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or SPCA. The Knights often donated their trained birds to sick and injured children, for Virginia believed, “Budgies do wonders for the kiddies. They make them forget their troubles and of course a happy mental outlook is a definite aid to better physical health.” The couple’s personal pets included eight different types of parrot, three talking budgies, a dancing bare-eyes cockatoo, three talking cockatiel, and “Hoppy” her pet owl. By 1952, they had a toucan and a macaw as pets. In later years, they added two small dogs. By 1965, Milton had over 25 years of service as a truck driver at the Vancouver Service Department. He was also an avid collector of antique watches and clocks. He reconditioned the timepieces, systematically restoring them to their original condition. He was a member of the National Association of Clock and Watch Collectors. Milt also treasured old music boxes and restored their large metal discs and rolls to “as new” condition. Milton Knight died March 7, 1966 at 62 years of age. Virginia Knight lived alone at 5755 Sperling Avenue after her husband’s death and continued her work at the Lakeview Aviary where she “doctored 700-800 [birds] a year free of charge (except medicine) and gave SPCA donations up to $1000 a year.” Virginia Knight passed away November 10, 1987 at 82 years of age.

History
A. Leila Orman was born June 2, 1901 in Eastleigh, Hampshire, England. She is the youngest daughter of Daisy Marie Orman, her sister Daisy Hilda Orman (later Targett) being three and a half years her senior. At five years old Leila began a long fight with a crippling type of rheumatoid arthritis. By the time she was thirteen, she experienced completely ankylosed joints. Her family travelled all over hoping to find a cure, but to no avail. In 1913 her father joined his two brothers in Calgary, and by 1915 the family had joined him. Leila developed an interest in painting and knitting, and composed her own poems. She began writing news articles for the Calgary Daily Herald in the 1930s, and her first sonnet was published in that paper on August 28, 1934. She had a strong interest in the arts, often writing about music and the visual arts. While living in Calgary, she became a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club as well as a member of the Canadian Author’s Association. When her father retired in 1938, the family moved to Rosewood Avenue in Burnaby. Leila wrote on a typewriter with two sticks to type out the letters. She was an avid reader and was able to turn the pages with a special stick with elastic bands wound around the ends. Canadian novelist Maida Parlow French became her lifelong friend and encouraged her to write her own autobiography, but she was not able to finish it. Leila wrote “The Giving Heart” in October of 1948. By 1952, she was writing the "Across the Board" column for the British Columbia Saturday Magazine with the intention of inspiring other “incapacitated folk” to live up to their full potential: “If [she] could reach a few people, and encourage them to reach up and out, [she] should feel the effort well worthwhile.” A member of the St. Alban’s Prayer Healing Fellowship group, Leila wrote the “Christian Manifesto for World Peace” in 1963. The Prayer Group met twice monthly at one of the members’ homes and undertook to pray daily for the sick and for world peace. After Leila’s mother died in 1955, Leila’s friend Jeanie Brown kept house for her and was her constant companion. Jeanie Brown and Leila lived together for over thirteen years until an accident sent Leila to hospital and later to nursing home where she died on February 16, 1976.

Interviews were conducted by Jim Wolf and Burnaby Village Museum curator Colin Stevens with members of the Love family including; Annie Chamberlain, William Parker, Esther Stanley, Albert Parker and Elsie Hughes. Interviews were focused on the subject of the interior and exterior of the farmhouse from a first person perspective. The goal was to obtain as much information as possible from family members in order to accurately restore, furnish and exhibit the farmhouse back to it's original 1920s era.

History
Reginald E. "Reg" Millway was born on December 20, 1915 at Milton Regis in the County of Kent. He graduated from London University via Regent Street Polytechnic and was appointed to the Air Ministry Technical Division in 1937, where he remained throughout World War II. Due to a hearing impairment he was unable to join the services and instead joined the Home Guard and served on fire bomb patrol in central London. Betty was born November 16, 1916. She married Reginald in 1940. Together they had four daughters: Catherine, Penelope “Penny”, Jennifer and Francis “Fran”. The Millways left Britain in March 1948. They sailed on the last voyage of the Acquitania to Halifax, and then took a parlour car in a C.N. train to New Westminster and took up residence in South Burnaby. After two or three years, Reginald had established his own business, Marine Electronics. When the United Flower Growers Cooperative formed in the late 1950s, Reginald helped them assemble property at Roseberry and Marine Way in cooperation with the Director of Planning. A large auditorium was built there and Reginald helped them design, manufacture and install a complete electronic system. Modifications and additions have occurred along the way to the point that it is handling millions of dollars worth of flowers annually and it is the largest operation of its kind in Canada. Reginald Millway ran in the Burnaby elections of 1957. Newly elected Mayor Alan Emmot offered him the chairmanship of the Zoning Board of Appeal (later the Board of Variance). He remained chairman for the next 35 years. In 1962, he joined the Rotary Club of Burnaby; he served as president of the club in 1969 and was a member for over 45 years. Reginald was also an early member of the Burnaby Historical Society. He served as its president for three terms. He and Blythe Eagles went to Loughborough, England, on behalf of the Society to locate and clean up the site of Robert Burnaby's grave. Reginald was also on the committee that acquired the property and organised the establishment of the Burnaby Village Museum. Betty Millway was an accomplished writer and received the 1984 Canadian Author’s Association Allan Sagster Award for long and meritorious service. She developed Robert Burnaby's family tree for the Historical Society and in the process made many contacts with prominent citizens of Loughborough, including the executive controller of the area, who introduced the Millways to the Mayor and Council. This formed the groundwork for a close relationship which Mayor Bill Lewarne formerly developed as a Sister City relationship in 1985. The Millways were longstanding members of the Burnaby Beautification Committee and their garden was featured in Gardens West in the 1998 November/December issue. Betty Millway died July 21, 2005. Reginald E. Millway died November 7, 2010.

History
Wesley Gardiner Morris was born in Summerside Prince Edward Island in 1884; his wife Laura Maude Weegar was born in Maxville, Ontario in 1886. Wesley graduated from McGill University in 1914, becoming a doctor, and received a gold medal in Chemistry. The couple was married in Maxville, Ontario in 1914 and lived in their first home in Chauvin, Alberta before moving to Burnaby in 1916. They lived on Imperial Street until their new home at 4265 Trafalgar Street (now 4241 Maywood Street) was built. Dr. Wesley Morris practiced medicine at his office at the corner of Kingsway and Sussex in part of Miss George’s Drugstore. During and following the Depression years, Dr. Morris was often paid in kind by his patients or they would pay off their bills by assisting with jobs around the family home. The couple lived in the home on Trafalgar Street raising their six daughters: Margaret, Betty, Dorothy, Jessie, Gertrude and Muriel until the Depression when they were forced to sell their home and move to ‘the ranch’ on Marine Drive. The ranch covered 13 acres of property on either side of Marine Drive from Boundary Road east including a ravine with a creek. Dr. Morris was known for his skill in setting fractures and due to his expertise he was called to an accident in the 1940s at the McMillan Bloedel mill on the Fraser River. Except for Gertrude (Ramage) all of their daughters graduated from Burnaby South High School. Following graduation from high school, Margaret (Sheldon) completed a business course, while both Betty (Purrot) and Dorothy (Johston) became nurses. Jessie (Hunter) joined the R.C.A.F. and after learning Morse code was posted to communications. Gertrude taught piano lessons and later received her real estate license. All of the girls were married in the 1950s and moved away from the property on Marine Drive with the exception of Muriel who was still in high school. Laura suddenly took ill in 1945 and died. Soon after her passing, Wesley purchased a lot at 4648 Marine Drive (DL 175) and built a small two bedroom home for himself and daughter Muriel. The old family home was rented, then sold, and later demolished around 1980. Dr. Wesley Morris died in 1960 and was buried alongside his wife Laura at Ocean View Memorial Cemetery in Burnaby. After her father died, Muriel continued to live in the small house later marrying Tom Di Guistini who settled there with her. Tom died in 1981 just two years before Muriel’s retirement as the secretary of Magee Secondary School in Vancouver. Soon after retirement, Muriel sold their home on Marine Drive and moved to a condominium near Central Park.

History
Master cabinet maker Arthur Davis and his wife Nellie Davis (nee Chard) emigrated from England, settling in South Burnaby around 1912. They built a house on Rumble Road, two doors down from Nelson Avenue School. Arthur and Nellie had five children: Arthur Jr., Alec, Mildred, Robert and Muriel, who was born in 1920. The family attended Alta Vista Baptist Church. Arthur Sr. built five more family homes over a 20 year period, all within the Imperial-Royal Oak area. Alec Davis died of an illness in 1940. Muriel attended Nelson Avenue School, and later Burnaby South High School. At the age of four, Nellie started her on lessons that went on for fifteen years. These lessons included dance, drama, piano, singing, choir practice and bagpipes. Muriel married pilot officer Gordon Skelhorne and went by Jean Shelhorne. Gordon studied medicine and became a family doctor. Jean received a Masters in Education and worked as an adult educator and counsellor. They had two children together, a daughter and a son. The son died in adolescence, the daughter now has a son of her own. Jean and Gordon Skelhorne moved from Burnaby to Mississauga, Ontario around 1963.

History
Nancy M. Bailey was the vice principal of Lord Tweedsmeer Hight School in Cloverdale, BC. In 1941, she met Laurence J. Peter, an industrial arts teacher at the school. In 1943 the couple married and in 1947 they moved to Burnaby. Laurence and Nancy had four children: two boys, John and Ted, and two girls, Alice and Margaret. The family was actively involved in the Burnaby community with Laurence and Nancy taking part in local politics and community activities and their children participating in Boy Scouts and Girl Guides and music lessons. All four children graduated from Burnaby North High School and in 1970, Ted and Alice completed their studies at British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). They worked local jobs in the community including on the construction of the Burnaby Mountain Golf Course. Laurence worked as a Mental Health Coordinator (Special Counselor) in the Vancouver School System and in 1959, Nancy joined the staff at the newly opened Burnaby Central Senior Secondary School as a Math teacher. She later became the head of the Mathematics Department at the school. The couple continued their education at summer school at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, where Nancy completed her Masters Degree in 1964 and Laurence his Doctoral degree in 1963. Laurence joined the faculty of the University of British Columbia in 1965 and received the WSU Regents’ Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1980. The couple separated in 1965 and Laurence moved to California in 1966 to teach at the University of Southern California. Nancy continued to teach at Burnaby South, until her retirement in 1978 after 30 years as head of the Mathematics Department at Burnaby Central. She was an active member of the Burnaby Historical Society for many years. Nancy passed away in Nanaimo near her family on April 21, 2013 at the age of 97.

History
The Burnaby Board of Trade formed on September 4, 1926 and registered with the province December 14, 1926. George Conway Brown was elected as Secretary. On May 30, 1927, The Governor General officially granted the Board to change its name to the North Burnaby Board of Trade. The Board's boundaries, under Secretary Thomas B. Blake, were changed from "the Municipality of Burnaby" to "that portion of the Municipality of Burnaby which lies north of Still Creek, Burnaby Lake and Brunette River" British Columbia. On April 26, 1932, the North Burnaby Board of Trade Constitution and Bylaws were adopted with A.G. Kidd as Secretary. Membership was open to all persons directly or indirectly engaged or interested in the trade and commerce or the economic welfare of the district of North Burnaby. The Secretary was the executive officer of the Board, ordered to keep the books, conduct the correspondence, preserve official documents, take minutes at all meetings, have custody of the seal and be in charge of all funds and accounts held by the Board. The North Burnaby Board of Trade was involved in many historic municipal decisions including the development of Barnet Park and establishing a unified Fire Department under one Fire Chief.

History
The North Burnaby Fish and Game Club was created out of the desire of Burnaby citizens for a club for sports fishermen, hunters, and archers. The inaugural meeting was held January 31, 1956 and Bill Killer, Maurice Griffin, Lloyd Smith, Gerry Wells, Joe Shand, Carson White and Bob Maitland were empowered by the 60 men present to form the organization. The club was officially registered in Victoria on March 12, 1958.

Subseries consists of the administrative records of the North Burnaby Kiwanis Club. Subseries also includes photographs of Club members and events, felt badges, and member name plates.
History
The North Burnaby Kiwanis Club was first organized on May 31, 1949. The club was officially incorporated in 1954 with W.G. Switzer as its first president. The territorial limits of the club were of Burnaby from north of the Grandview highway to the easterly limits of the municipality, using the Great Northern Railway (G.N.R.) right-of-way as their division line. Membership consisted of men in good character and community standing, residing, having interest in, or engaged in recognised lines of business, agricultural, institutional and professional life within the territorial limits of the club. The North Burnaby Kiwanis Club’s goals were: to give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to the material values of life; to encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships; to promote the adoption and application of higher social, business and professional standards; to develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship; to provide, through this club, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build a better community; to cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and good will. The final meeting of the North Burnaby Kiwanis Club was held January 17, 1977.

History
Parks and Recreation Commission was established on December 30, 1957. This Commission was responsible for maintaining Burnaby's parks and recreational outlets, and was the successor to the Board of Parks Commissioners. In 1999, the Commission was renamed Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission.
