History
The Douglas Road School was originally established as a two-room school in 1908, which later expanded to four classrooms. Anticipating rapid settlement of this district, the School Board purchased two acres adjoining the original building. Two of the four rooms were designed to become one large auditorium suitable for special events and public gatherings, with seating for two hundred people. Designed by McCarter & Nairne, the school was built by contractor A.S. Perry.

History
The North Burnaby Fish and Game Club was created out of the desire of Burnaby citizens for a club for sports fishermen, hunters, and archers. The inaugural meeting was held January 31, 1956 and Bill Killer, Maurice Griffin, Lloyd Smith, Gerry Wells, Joe Shand, Carson White and Bob Maitland were empowered by the 60 men present to form the organization. The club was officially registered in Victoria on March 12, 1958.

History
Tinkerbell Cooperative Kindergarten was established in 1955. The school was spearheaded by a group of mothers who felt that four and five year olds would benefit from a preschool. In February of that year, they met with the President of the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) and two members from the Helper's Committee of the Cooperative Play Group Association. They began meeting weekly to plan the opening of a local play group. On March 26, the group held a salvage drive to raise funds for equipment, and, with the help of the fathers, raised $142.00. They continued to raise funds though bingo, teas, and dances. Fathers made a stove, kitchen cabinets, easels, hand carved animals, screens, shelves and a wash stand. The Cooperative Kindergarten opened April 18, 1955 with an enrollment of 23 children. Lucy Emma Brown is considered the founder of the school, teaching kindergarten from the school's beginning in 1955 until it closed in 1968.

History
Nancy M. Bailey was the vice principal of Lord Tweedsmeer Hight School in Cloverdale, BC. In 1941, she met Laurence J. Peter, an industrial arts teacher at the school. In 1943 the couple married and in 1947 they moved to Burnaby. Laurence and Nancy had four children: two boys, John and Ted, and two girls, Alice and Margaret. The family was actively involved in the Burnaby community with Laurence and Nancy taking part in local politics and community activities and their children participating in Boy Scouts and Girl Guides and music lessons. All four children graduated from Burnaby North High School and in 1970, Ted and Alice completed their studies at British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). They worked local jobs in the community including on the construction of the Burnaby Mountain Golf Course. Laurence worked as a Mental Health Coordinator (Special Counselor) in the Vancouver School System and in 1959, Nancy joined the staff at the newly opened Burnaby Central Senior Secondary School as a Math teacher. She later became the head of the Mathematics Department at the school. The couple continued their education at summer school at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, where Nancy completed her Masters Degree in 1964 and Laurence his Doctoral degree in 1963. Laurence joined the faculty of the University of British Columbia in 1965 and received the WSU Regents’ Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1980. The couple separated in 1965 and Laurence moved to California in 1966 to teach at the University of Southern California. Nancy continued to teach at Burnaby South, until her retirement in 1978 after 30 years as head of the Mathematics Department at Burnaby Central. She was an active member of the Burnaby Historical Society for many years. Nancy passed away in Nanaimo near her family on April 21, 2013 at the age of 97.

Archie Miller was born in 1946 in New Westminster, BC into a family of commercial fishers. He served as the curator of the New Westminster musuem Irving House until his retirement in 1999. He authored "Irving House, a family history" with museum assistant Valerie Francis in 1988. Since retiring, Archie conducts local historical research and writes about BC with his wife, Dale.

History
Born in North Vancouver on December 5, 1919, Robert “Bob” William Prittie was the first of four sons born to Wilmot Prittie and Mary Adair. As a child, his health was weaker than younger brothers Bill, Eric and Halford, as he suffered from Polio and asthma. Bob was an industrious youth who left school early to work in a department store warehouse. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Bob enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force and spent the duration of the war serving on the ground in Canada at the Patricia Bay Air Force Base and the No. 3 Bombing and Gunnery School in Manitoba, completing his high school education through correspondence courses. While at the Patricia Bay Air Force Base, he met pre-school teacher Grace King of Sidney, Vancouver Island. By 1940 they were married and soon after, had their first son, Robert King. In 1945, Bob was discharged from the air force with the rank of sergeant and entered the University of British Columbia, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree with honours in history. After the war, Bob spent a few years working in Ottawa as a foreign-service officer, but he returned to UBC in 1949, receiving a diploma in education. He later undertook post-graduate studies at Laval University and Western Washington State College. Bob returned to Burnaby in 1950 following the tragic death of their son. He immediately began teaching. Over the next thirteen years, he taught at Sperling Avenue School, McPherson Park Junior High School, Burnaby South High School and Burnaby North High School. He and Grace went on to have three more children: Heather in 1951, Bruce in 1953, and Ian in 1955. In 1959 he was elected to serve as a member of the municipal Council, re-elected and serving until the end of his term in 1962 when he left to serve as Member of Parliament for the Burnaby-Richmond riding. He held that office until 1968. In January 1969, Bob first took office as Mayor of Burnaby and in that capacity served on the GVRD as a Director for a number of years. In May of 1973, he decided to resign as Mayor of Burnaby in order to take up a position as Assistant Deputy Minister of Municipal Affairs and in 1975 he was appointed as the Minister of Municipal Affairs, a post he held for a short time. After his tenure as Minister, Bob retired from public life and he and his second wife Isobel Pothecary moved to Victoria. Isobel had three children from a previous marriage: Alan, Deirdre and Fiona. Bob left an enduring legacy for the citizens of Burnaby as a champion of schools, libraries and parks and recreation programs. In 1978 he was awarded the title of "Freeman of the Municipality" and in 1991 a new branch of the Burnaby Public Library was opened and named after him. His status as Freeman and the naming of the library in his honour are testament to his record of service and dedication to the community and its citizens. Robert Prittie died on January 14, 2002.

Hector MacCubbin was Principal officer at Oakalla Prison Farm. During a major disturbance in September of 1982 he fired three rounds of ammunition to prevent a mass exit from the yard. Roy Staples was a former Senior Corrections Officer. Roy has written numerous articles on Oakalla, including one on Oakalla's award winning Clydesdales.

History
The North Burnaby Kiwanis Club was first organized on May 31, 1949. The club was officially incorporated in 1954 with W.G. Switzer as its first president. The territorial limits of the club were of Burnaby from north of the Grandview highway to the easterly limits of the municipality, using the Great Northern Railway (G.N.R.) right-of-way as their division line. Membership consisted of men in good character and community standing, residing, having interest in, or engaged in recognised lines of business, agricultural, institutional and professional life within the territorial limits of the club. The North Burnaby Kiwanis Club’s goals were: to give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to the material values of life; to encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships; to promote the adoption and application of higher social, business and professional standards; to develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship; to provide, through this club, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build a better community; to cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and good will. The final meeting of the North Burnaby Kiwanis Club was held January 17, 1977.

History
The Capitol Hall Community Association was formed in 1912, with meetings held in a machine shop located south of Hastings Street. By 1923, the Association had moved to the original Howard Avenue School at Howard and Francis, but the building was destroyed by fire in 1924. A new hall was erected south of Hastings Street in 1926 and was used for Association activities until 1943 when it was also destroyed by fire. From 1943 until late 1947, Capitol Hill Community Association meetings were held in a variety of places, including the United Church Hall, Mrs. Wilson’s house on Ellesmere, Capitol Hill School, Harry Royle’s Store and Mrs. Wood’s house on North Warwick. Various plans and sketches for a new hall were discussed, including one by architect Harold Collerne, but it was turned down. By June of 1944, members decided on the Howard Avenue site on Dynes Park, north of Hastings Street. Two applications for building permits were turned down. In 1946, the Municipal Clerk finally requested tenders for the erection of the hall. In 1947, a "temporary” hall was built on the present site and remains there to this day. Planning and construction was carried out with George Green as Chairman of the Building Committee and William James Dynes as Foreman. The members were in the new hall by December 1947.

History
The Central Burnaby Ratepayers and Citizens Association was incorporated as a Society on November 21, 1944. The Assocation operated out of the Douglas Road School with membership open to all ratepayers and bona fide residents of Central Burnaby. In the beginning, the Association had the objective of developing interest in local municipal affairs in cooperation with the Council of Burnaby, and to promote the social and cultural life of the community. By 1964, the Association's objective was to keep the citizens informed on subjects of local interest, to enquire into local problems, and, if necessary, to petition Council.

History
Thomas Blake and his wife Gertrude came to Burnaby in 1921 with their three children: Thomas "Tom", Susie and Frederick "Fred" (b. 1912). They lived at 4456 Pandora street, owning that lot and the adjoining 66 foot lot on the west. The Municipality cleared a trail, later putting down a one-plank sidewalk and bringing in a half-inch water line for the family. The Blake family lived in two wall tents for a few years while they cleared their land and built their house. In 1921 at the age of nine, Fred Blake attended Gilmore School where he learned about different woods and how to use hand tools. In 1927, he attended North Burnaby High School in a commercial course were he learned typing, shorthand, book-keeping a commercial law. Throughout his teenage years, Fred worked at Armour Photo Finishing, developing rolls of film and collecting and delivering the films and finished prints. Thomas Blake worked part-time for the Burnaby Advertiser and part-time for the Vancouver Sun to pay his way through university and become a Burnaby school teacher. In 1927, at the age of sixteen, Fred began his firefighting career as a volunteer, with the first major fire of his career taking place December 31, 1927 at the 4600 block of Albert Street. He continued as a volunteer until 1934 when he went to the logging camps as a steam fireman in the Queen Charlotte Islands and on the coast. In the early 1930s, Fred was a member of the Army of the Common Good, and with the falling crew cut second growth timber on Capitol Hill for firewood to be shared with other members. The Army also produced over 125 tons of vegetables from its own gardens to feed children and youth who were near starvation from lack of adequate relief funds from the municipality. The Army was in operations for ten years and during that time the members organised the Credit Union movement of British Columbia and drew up the Credit Union act thorough the Vancouver Co-operative Council. They also started Co-Op stores and the Co-Op Wholesale Society. During this time, while on Relief (now welfare) Fred also worked for the municipality on the two projects of the clearing of Confederation Park and the clearing of Lougheed Highway. Fred re-joined the Burnaby fire department on April 1, 1939, as a paid member at No. 1 Hall. He came up through the ranks to become Training Officer for the department in 1949 and full time training officer with the rank of District Chief in 1952. Fred was promoted to Assistant Chief in 1966. He retired from service March 1, 1972.

The Clef Society of Burnaby was incorporated on February 8, 1949, with original subscribers Elizabeth Dawson, Lilian Haste, Mona Weeks, Emily Scott, and Eleanor Cailes. As a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering music appreciation and music advancement in Burnaby, and to promoting musical instruction and education and encouraging outstanding musical talent, the Society created musical evenings in homes, public recitals and concerts, children's plays, light operas, and scholarship competitions.

History
The Victorian Order of Nurses for Canada is a non-profit charitable organization created for the purposes of home care and social services established in 1898 to perpetuate the memory of Victoria the Good. Lady Aberdeen, founding president of the National Council of Women and wife of Canadian Governor General Lord Aberdeen, was a great believer in the need for a nursing service in Canada, particularly for the less fortunate and recommended the organization be established. The Burnaby Branch of the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) was established in 1912 with Miss Colhoun as its first nurse.

History
Milton "Milt" Waller Knight was born in Canada circa 1904. His wife Virginia Harrington was born in Duluth, Minnesota circa 1905 and lived most of her life in Canada. Virginia was the first person in British Columbia to breed budgies when she began in 1932 and by 1939 she and her husband created the first crested budgie in the world. By 1942, Virginia was also housing two-hundred and fifty birds at the home of her mother, Mrs. N.M. Herington, which was located at 1775 West 13th Avenue in Burnaby. Milton and Virginia Knight moved into their own home during the war years but, as they could not get their large aviary moved, they were forced to sell their crested birds. When they started up in their birds again, they obtained some of their crested back. By 1948 they had created two types of crested: those with a miniature cockatiel crest and those with a crest like a crested canary. By 1950 they had created the crested in over twelve colours of budgie, including cobalt and yellow-wing greens. The Knights lived together at 3718 Sperling Avenue (later renumbered 5255 Sperling Avenue) and opened Lakeview Aviaries on their one acre property at Deer Lake where Virginia specialized in budgies (Budgerigars) and bred the first albino in Canada and the first crested variety in the world. She kept Java rice birds, button quail, red factor canaries, cockatiels, finches, love birds and twelve varieties of budgerigar. She was a member of the British Columbia Budgerigar and Foreign Bird Society. The facilities at Lakeview Aviaries included two heated aviary cages and three outdoor flight cages constructed by Milton. Lakeview housed the only "hospital" facilities in the city for cage birds, which featured an electrically heated, thermostatically controlled hospital cage. Virginia, known in the community as “the Bird Doctor” nursed many sick birds back to health free of charge for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or SPCA. The Knights often donated their trained birds to sick and injured children, for Virginia believed, “Budgies do wonders for the kiddies. They make them forget their troubles and of course a happy mental outlook is a definite aid to better physical health.” The couple’s personal pets included eight different types of parrot, three talking budgies, a dancing bare-eyes cockatoo, three talking cockatiel, and “Hoppy” her pet owl. By 1952, they had a toucan and a macaw as pets. In later years, they added two small dogs. By 1965, Milton had over 25 years of service as a truck driver at the Vancouver Service Department. He was also an avid collector of antique watches and clocks. He reconditioned the timepieces, systematically restoring them to their original condition. He was a member of the National Association of Clock and Watch Collectors. Milt also treasured old music boxes and restored their large metal discs and rolls to “as new” condition. Milton Knight died March 7, 1966 at 62 years of age. Virginia Knight lived alone at 5755 Sperling Avenue after her husband’s death and continued her work at the Lakeview Aviary where she “doctored 700-800 [birds] a year free of charge (except medicine) and gave SPCA donations up to $1000 a year.” Virginia Knight passed away November 10, 1987 at 82 years of age.

History
Gustav and Aune Rintanen came to Vancouver from a mixed farm on the prairies in 1936 with the hopes of finding employment. The couple had two children: nine year old Aili (later Topalian) and eight year old Trudi (later Tuomi), when they moved to a “squatters shack” at North Burnaby’s waterfront Crabtown community in 1937. They paid 50 dollars for their two-room cabin, which was built on a platform and supported by pilings. Though the squatters’ homes that ran along the Inlet were commonly referred to as shacks and Crabtown a slum, in reality they were very neatly kept homes in a community. Crabtown residents rallied together to build a water supply system and trails up the steep bluff with stairs and banisters so children could go to school safely. Before Gustav found a job, he “busied himself with fixing up the place”: building a new chimney, railing, wood shed, clothes line and sauna for his family. By 1940, he was working at the mill near Windermere pool (now New Brighton Park). Aune worked as a dishwasher and prep cook at Ye Olde English Fish and Chips in downtown Vancouver. In 1946, they sold the cabin for two hundred dollars and moved to a small house. All Crabtown squatters were eventually evicted in 1959.

History
The Burnaby Lake Men’s Community Service Club was incorporated on March 26, 1946. The aims of the club were to: cultivate a desire in our members to be of the greatest service to their community; elevate and reinforce the standards of good citizenship; foster friendship and broaden human sympathy and express them in terms of social helpfulness; and provide for wholesome recreation, education, civic and other leisure-time activities of the community. ccording to a membership drive handout produced in 1951, yearly membership was $1 and in order to be a member you had to: have been a former member; be present active member; be of the male species; or be t least mildly interested in the betterment of the social activities of your community and the promotion of good fellowship. Director of the Department of Education, Henry Hill, was the first president of the Club. Hill was also instrumental in the creation of the Valley View Community Council, which was originally made up of two appointed delegates from the Central Burnaby Ratepayers & Citizen’s Association, the Burnaby Lake Men’s Community Service Club and the Women’s Community Club. The Valley View Community Council became a Society on February 10, 1948. In 1943 Burnaby City Council pledged to help fund at least one Community Centre in each Ward of the Municipality by 50% (up to $2,500 per building). The Club had a plan to provide a Community Centre for the Central Burnaby area as early as 1945 when they visited the site allotted to the cause by the Council of Burnaby on Douglas Road at Ledger Street (later renamed and numbered 4050 Grandview Highway and later called Canada Way). They organized Annual Country Fairs, with the first held in 1944, to raise funds from community members and by November 30, 1946, they had $3,750 “held for the purpose of building a Community Centre.” The building was erected and by December of 1949 it was used for the purpose of holding a Municipal Election.

History
Charles B. "Charlie" Brown began working for the municipality of Burnaby in 1911 as a stenographer in the Engineer's office. He was appointed assistant municipal clerk in 1927 and assumed the role of municipal clerk in 1933. He served as municipal clerk from 1933-1954 and chief administrative officer from 1954 until his retirement in 1959. Charles was married to Lillian Bernice "Bernie" Bryan Brown.

History
Harold Joseph Jackson and Florence Colocott married in 1925. The couple bought a brown wooden shingled house at 3507 Booth Avenue in Burnaby in 1926. Vera Rose Jackson was born to Harold and Florence at Mrs. Scott’s private hospital on Kingsway near Central Park December 4, 1927. Her brother Ronald Harold Jackson was born June 21, 1929. In 1934, the family moved to 2706 Cassie Avenue (later renumbered 6457). Vera attended Miss Edith Hall’s Kindergarten on Grange Street until she was old enough to enter Kingsway West as a grade one student. The family were members of the West Burnaby United Church and Vera and Ron both went to Sunday school in the old church basement. Vera attended Burnaby South High School where she met her future husband, Fred Pel. In 1944, Vera started a job at the Royal Bank in Burnaby. Besides the manager and the accountant, the entire staff at the branch were young women fresh out of school, as the men had left to serve during World War II. She worked at the Royal Bank from 1944 until 1952. During her time as clerk, she witnessed two armed robberies: one in May of 1946 and the other in January of 1948.

History
Donald Neil "Don" Brown was born in Birmingham, England. In 1922, while still an infant, he and his family moved to Winnipeg, Canada. On September 8, 1939, Don left his Senior Matriculation classes to join the Royal Canadian Engineers. Two weeks later, he eloped with his high school sweetheart, Helen J., just months before he was to be shipped overseas with the 3rd Contingent of Canadian Troops. He served in the army with the Royal Canadian Engineer’s 12th Field Company and saw action in both Sicily and Italy. In 1945, Don returned to obtain his Senior Matriculation and a year of university studies before re-enlisting in the army as a Second Lieutenant. He spent the next two years stationed in Chilliwack with Helen and their first child. In 1947, he left the army to join the ranks of the British Columbia Provincial Police force, embarking on a three-decade long career. His first assignment brought him to Burnaby where he served from 1947-1954, first as a member of the BC Police Department and then as a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman. In 1954, Don was transferred to Regina, Saskatchewan and then to Ottawa, Ontario to serve in the Crime Detection Laboratories. He became a qualified Examiner of Questioned Documents and provided expert testimony in handwriting, counterfeiting, graphic arts, and alterations. He attained the rank of first Corporal, and then Sergeant in the RCMP. He was transferred to Vancouver to be the Second in Charge of a new laboratory and head of the Document Section in July, 1963. On December 9, 1967, Helen Brown ran as an independent for the position of Alderman on the Burnaby Council. She was not elected. In May 1970, Don was promoted to Sub-Inspector and transferred to Edmonton to take command of the new Crime Detection Laboratory. By 1972, he was promoted to full Inspector. Transferred back to Vancouver in 1975, Don became the Officer-in-Charge of a new Crime Laboratory and took over the National Police Services pilot project for British Columbia. He was rewarded for this work with a promotion to Superintendent in September 1975. In 1976, after a distinguished 35 years combined service to the armed forces and the police, Don retired and founded his own laboratory to carry on his work in the field of questioned documents. He became a Fellow (Emeritus) of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, a Life Member (Emeritus) and Past Director of the Canadian Society of Forensic Sciences, a Member of the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Document Examiners. After his retirement, Don became involved in local politics and, with the blessing of his wife and six children, joined the Burnaby Voters’ Association as their Secretary. In 1978 he was elected to a two-year term as a Burnaby School Trustee. During the next municipal election in November 1979, he successfully ran for Alderman. Don Brown served Burnaby as Alderman from 1979 to 1985. During this time, Don also became a member of the Community College for the Retired, the Horsemen’s Society and the Burnaby Historical Society. He also gave his support to Arts Council programs and numerous other community functions over the years and author "Why?: The Last Years of the British Columbia Policy 1858-1950" about the BC Provincial Police. In 1991, Don was appointed as Chair of the Burnaby Centennial Committee, dedicating himself to making Burnaby’s Centennial celebration a memorable success. His contributions were always supported by his wife Helen, and their work during the Centennial Year was just one example of the strength of their 66-year partnership. They were both formally recognized for their efforts when they were chosen to receive the Kushiro Cup and named the Citizens of the Year in 1992. Also that year, Don was a recipient of the Canadian 125 Medal and one year later, in March 1993, Donald Brown was awarded Burnaby’s highest honour and was made a Freeman of the City of Burnaby. Don passed away in 2009.

History
The Easthope family has lived in Burnaby since 1889, when Ernest and Ann Easthope emigrated from Wolverhapton, England with eight of their nine children and settled in the Edmonds district. They later moved to Vancouver where Ernest started Easthope Bros., a marine engine business on Georgia Street with two of his sons, Percy and George. George married Elizabeth Tisdale of Sapperton, BC in 1902 and in 1905, George Jr. was born, eventually having eight siblings. In 1926, the family moved to Lochdale, Burnaby, where the children attended St. Helen's Catholic private school, Capitol Hill School and Burnaby North High School. George Jr. married Dorothy May Parkes (b. 1903), and by 1930, they had built a house at 6671 Halifax Street in Burnaby where they lived for the rest of their married lives. George Jr. died in 1986.

History
The original Riverway West School was a one room school house built in 1923 just west of the ravine at Sussex Avenue and Marine Drive. Miss Marion Swanson was the first teacher at the school ande Mr. Morrison its first custodian. Miss Carrie Kidd taught from 1924 to 1935, with the enrolment increasing from 18 in 1924 to 42 pupils in 1929, and including grades one to seven. In 1930 grades one to four were at Riverway while the older students went to Nelson. It continued on as a one-room school of four grades until 1952. As the school was seen by parents to be “greatly lacking” for students and teachers “in comfortable accommodations and vital equipment necessary for their extra curricular and recreational needs, such as were enjoyed by children in the larger schools” they formed a parent-teacher association in September 1951 to remedy the situation. From the beginning the PTA was very active in making its desires known to the School Board and “the school was very fortunate to have an organisation which put forth such a united effort on behalf of the children”. Their first bazaar fundraiser allowed the PTA to purchase a hot plate and the necessary utensils to provide the students with soup and cocoa during the cold weather. At their request, the School Board improved the electrical wiring in the school and built a roof over the stairs to the basement and provided more sports equipment for the children. Art classes and piano classes were started through the efforts of the members and in 1953 a cub pack and a brownie pack with PTA members as Cub Leaders and Brownie Leaders was created. A ditto machine and school library were the direct results of successful bazaars held by the PTA. The PTA also made a survey of the school district in 1951 to analyse the future school population and presented the results to the School Board. Following this, a portable unit was erected beside the existing school house for use the following September. It was in use until 1958. In the late 1950s, the PTA approached the School Board and the Burnaby Parks and Recreation Commission and proposed a park on the grounds adjacent to their school to relieve a playfield deficiency. The creation of Riverway West Park was the direct result of this proposal. As Parks Planner Paul Stocksted pointed out in 1961, “All of this would not have been possible had not the people associated with the PTA insisted on the solution to the problem of inadequate play areas.” In 1957 the first unit of the new Riverway West School underwent construction. Designed by Carlberg and Jackson with Remigio Maniaga as the contractor, it was completed in September of 1957 and consisted of four classrooms, an activity room and administration facilities. A two classroom addition, also designed by Carlberg and Jackson. was completed on the last day of 1959, three months after its construction began.

History
Alvin Burtch was a British Columbia Electric Railway conductor who drove for the BCER for 38 years, 30 of those years on the Burnaby Lake Line. He was the driver for the line's final run in 1953, his 37th year of service. Burtch had a daughter named Hazel Cunningham, who grew up in Burnaby and married Friends of the Carousel member Harry Sumner.

History
Frederick "Fred" Sullivan Ross was born 1887 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He took his apprenticeship in mechanics in Glasgow prior to 1911, following which he immigrated to Canada. During the First World War he returned to Britain and joined the Royal Navy. He was a Chief Petty Officer, working in the engine room of a mine sweeper in the North Atlantic. Margaret Binnie Dougal was in 1884 in Linlithgow, Scotland. She trained as a nurse before emigrating to Canada in 1911. She also returned to Britain during the war years, nursing at Boulogne in France and later Bristol before returning to Vancouver in 1919. She met Fred through a mutual friend, Agnes Rhind. Fred and Margaret married in 1920 in Vancouver, BC. Their first home was in North Vancouver and was where their first child, Ronald, was born. In 1921 or 1922 they moved to the Burnaby Lake area, buying a three-quarter acre parcel of land at 2974 Sprott Street and had two more children, Ian and Alistair. Fred built, owned and operated the Ross Service Station on Douglas Road, established in 1922 or 1923. The station property ran from Douglas Road up to the Douglas Road School’s fence line. After the municipality appropriated part of the property in the 1930s to create a junction for the new Grandview Highway and existing Douglas Road, Fred got permission to build an upper station with two more pumps. The driveway curved down to the station from where Sprott Street now joins Canada Way and rejoined that road near its junction with Douglas Road. At Ross Service Station, Fred did automobile repairs and used the family car, a Studebaker Commander, as a towing vehicle. He created a garden north of the service station on the upper level where he grew chrysanthemums and daises. In the 1930s, Terry Rowley worked at the service station as one of Fred’s assistants. Fred ran the station until he sold it in about 1949. Margaret died December 29, 1969 at the age of 85. Fred died on August 21, 1971 at the age of 84.

History
The Burnaby Board of Trade formed on September 4, 1926 and registered with the province December 14, 1926. George Conway Brown was elected as Secretary. On May 30, 1927, The Governor General officially granted the Board to change its name to the North Burnaby Board of Trade. The Board's boundaries, under Secretary Thomas B. Blake, were changed from "the Municipality of Burnaby" to "that portion of the Municipality of Burnaby which lies north of Still Creek, Burnaby Lake and Brunette River" British Columbia. On April 26, 1932, the North Burnaby Board of Trade Constitution and Bylaws were adopted with A.G. Kidd as Secretary. Membership was open to all persons directly or indirectly engaged or interested in the trade and commerce or the economic welfare of the district of North Burnaby. The Secretary was the executive officer of the Board, ordered to keep the books, conduct the correspondence, preserve official documents, take minutes at all meetings, have custody of the seal and be in charge of all funds and accounts held by the Board. The North Burnaby Board of Trade was involved in many historic municipal decisions including the development of Barnet Park and establishing a unified Fire Department under one Fire Chief.

History
The Burnaby Lawn Bowling Club began in West Burnaby in 1914. On December 1, 1937, the club amalgamated with the Ladies Central Park Club to create the Burnaby Lawn Bowling Club at Central Park. By that time, the Burnaby Lawn Bowling Club had already won a number of British Columbia Lawn Bowling Association tournaments and trophies. The joint executive of the Men's and Ladies' Burnaby Lawn Bowling Clubs formed the Building Fund and Social Committee in 1945 with the purpose of collecting funds to improve the clubhouse and green. The committee remained active throughout the 1950s and 60s. In 1973, under the new title of South Burnaby Lawn Bowling Club, the constitution and by-laws of the club were established.

History
The Water Committee was established in 1910. The Water Committee was primarily concerned with building sewerage, maintaining the City's water system, and monitoring water supply and water usage. The Water Committee was renamed the Water and Parks Committee in 1928. In 1929, the name was reverted back to the Water Committee. This committee disbanded in 1932.

History
Kathleen Moxham was born in England in 1911. She emigrated from England with her family in 1912, settling first in New Westminster, BC. A year later, they moved to a large house on Sixth Street in Burnaby, BC. Kathleen’s father, Godfrey Moxham, worked as a contractor. He cleared land and built houses, including the Brook House (now the Normanna Rest Home). He died April 8, 1968. Kathleen attended Edmonds Elementary School and later Burnaby South High School. She remembers going on strike with fellow Edmonds Elementary students in 1919 when teachers refused to allow students a spring holiday after so much time had been lost to school closures brought on by the influenza epidemic earlier in the school year.
