- History
- Beginning in 2018, students at the University of British Columbia's Asian Canadian & Asian Migration Studies department and Initiative for Student Teaching and Research in Chinese Canadians Studies have participated in a research partnership with Burnaby Village Museum, which focuses on learning more about the stories of Asian Canadians who have lived in Burnaby. Each summer, a cohort of student interns have worked at or with the Museum to expand our research goals. In the first two years of the project, student interns created historical interpretive experiences in the museum including "a Story Garden" and "Story Harvest Station". These were intended to educate museum visitors on Chinese Canadian history in the market garden site. In 2019, interactive tours were designed and led by the team of interns. These included a three panel art piece of early Chinese Canadian industries, a visual compilation of migration stories involving a comic strip and family friendly activities. In 2020, due to the restrictions of COVID-19, the interns were asked to create virtual experiences to reimagine Burnaby Village Museum's historical Chinese Canadian programming in remote online spaces. Debbie Liang and Joty Gill (UBC alumni and graduates of Dr. Henry Yu's 2019 summer ACAM 390A Global Seminar to Asia) returned to work with Burnaby Village Museum to create two short films showcasing the history of Chinese Canadian Chop Suey restaurants and Piggeries in Burnaby. Rose Wu and Wei Yan Yeong (students in the UBC Faculty of Land and Food Systems) created a three episode podcast series "Back to the Roots" which delved into the topics of family-operated farming businesses, Chinese contributions to early local and alternative food systems, and Traditional Chinese Medicine and herbalism. During their research the interns interviewed Dr. John Yang and Burnaby Village Museum researcher and PHD candidate, Denise Fong.

- History
- The Community Heritage Commission was established in 1988 by Burnaby City Council under the provisions of the B.C. Heritage Conservation Act. The role of the Commission has been to advise Council on various heritage matters referred to it by Council. The Commission has evolved to oversee programs and projects that support heritage conservation in Burnaby as guided by the Official Community Plan. One of the goals of the plan is to provide opportunities for increased awareness and the conservation of the City's unique natural, cultural, archaeological and built heritage. In 2017, the Community Heritage Commission received funding from Burnaby City Council and the BC/Canada 150 project to launch a Heritage Interpretive Plaque Program to celebrate and mark Burnaby's 125 anniversary. The project was launched by the Planning and Building Department in partnership with the Burnaby Village Museum which included the development of online video vignettes to accompany the markers in a new expanded interpretive program.

The project asked Burnaby seniors to write a short film about their lives and then to record using video software. Sharing Our Stories became part of a federally funded Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Partnership Grant in 2014 along with AGE-WELL NCE grants and was hosted by the City of Burnaby (BVM) and the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University. BVM was given permission to have a copy of some of the films for their collection.

The series consists of interviews with 23 people interviewed during 18 sessions which were conducted between September 2015 and January 2016. The purpose of the project was to explore the history of the Burnaby Mountain area which includes the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area and Centennial Pavilion area, Simon Fraser University, the Trans Mountain tank farm, neighbourhoods such as Lochdale, Forest Hills, and Forest Grove, and watersheds such as the Stoney Creek watershed. A diverse group was interviewed who covered a wide range of topics such as recreation and other uses made of the mountain, the history of setting aside and managing parkland on the mountain, the mountain as home, and values assigned to the natural features of the mountain. The people interviewed included past and present employees of Burnaby's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department; retired Burnaby city planning staff; retired Simon Fraser University professors; members of the Burnaby Mountain Biking Association, Burnaby Mountain Preservation Society, and the Stoney Creek Environment Committee; people who lived or live in adjacent neighbourhoods and have memories of the mountain from the 1930s onwards; past and present city council members and citizen representatives on the Parks Commission. The interviews range from 1 to 2 1/2 hours in length and cover a time period primarily between 1930 and 2015.
