- From Denby Bros. Shoe Store at 163 West Pender in Vancouver. Stafford Ague Denby (1882-1957) started peddling shoe findings in 1918 around Vancouver to repair shops around town from the back of an old Ford. Two of his brothers, William Albert (1873-1947) and Melvin Stanley (1879-1953) joined him in 1919 to form Denby Bros & Co. Ltd Leather and Shoe Findings at 163 West Pender. William Gordon Pope started helping out in the shoe store at the age of 10. He eventually ran the store with his cousin, Pat Denby (son of William A. Denby) starting in the 1950s. The store closed in 1974.

- English Name: Snakegourd Root Chinese Pinyin Name: Tianhuafen (TianHuaFen) Physical Description: thin longitudinal slices of dried root, white; slightly irregular rectangular shapes with horizontal rippling; surfaces are dotted in places; some pieces broken Production Regions: Primarily produced in the Chinese provinces of Hebei, Shandong, Shaanxi, Shanxi. Functions: Clears heat, drains fire, engenders fluid, stops thirst, expels pus, eliminates swelling. Apply to thirst due to heat, diabetes, jaundice, hemoptysis due to dryness of lung, swelling abscess, hemorrhoid fistula. As for apply to diabetes, often combined with medicinal material, which can nourish yin, to achieve the effect.

- English Name: Villous Amomun Fruit Chinese Pinyin Name: Sharen (ShaRen / SuoShaMiRen) Physical Description: many small dried fruits, flattened ovals, ranging from pale tan to darker reddish brown colour; some have longitudinal ridges, others appear wrinkled, with stem protrusion one end or hole; at least one is broken open Production Regions: Primarily produced in the Chinese provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi. Imported sha ren is produced in Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, and Indonesia. Functions: Transforms dampness, increases appetite, warms spleen, relieves diarrhea, regulates qi, calms fetus. - Yellow label with black text. Label contains Chinese characters that are literally translated to: "Watson's" and "home" and "made" and "top" and "up" and "Quinine" and "powder". When adjusted for English comprehension, product is " Watson's Quinine powder". Quinine is a treatment for malaria. It is also used to treat lupus and arthritis. Quinine was also frequently prescribed as an off-label treatment for leg cramps at night, but this has become less common due to a Food and Drug Administration warning that this practice is associated with life-threatening side effects.
