- Item is a digitized silent film segment identified as Reel 8. Most of the film is in black and white but switches to a pinky hue about 3/4 of the way through. The film footage provides views of road travels with the Digney family as they drive around Ontario and into Detroit via the Windsor Bridge. Footage includes travels to Niagara Falls and the power plant, the gates of the CNE and the Toronto skyline, a scene in Quebec where the Digney car is being loaded on board a large ship, followed by glimpses of life aboard the oceanliner as the family travels to England. Once in England, the family is seen enjoying a picnic with relatives and the film cuts and ends with a scene of a polo match.

- The tray is stamped out of sheet brass. The edges have a scalloped border design. There is a scratch on bottom.
- Object History
- Owned by the Sample family and used at their boarding house in South Burnaby. The boarding house was used as the first meeting place for Burnaby Municipal Council in 1892. The tray may have been used along with the inkwells and candle holder during meetings of the early council.

- tray; a First Nations made, basketry tray; low sides and two raised handles opposite each other; decorative star or flower pattern woven into the bottom in varying shades of brown; multiple areas of loss around outer sides of rim.

- The tray and two baskets (see BV017.11.3 and BV017.11.4) were acquired by the donor's grandparents, Matilda and Robert William Handel, when they were living in North Vancouver. They were made by one of the local First Nations weavers, name unknown.

- The South Burnaby Merchants Challenge Cup was awarded to the person who won the most points at Horticultural fair. (Vancouver Sun - 16 Nov 1940). 1937 and 1938 winner "T.L. Heads" was likely Burnaby resident Thomas Laing Heads (1891-1944). At the time of his death, Thomas was residing at 2754 Sussex Avenue. He was elected president of the South Burnaby Horticultural Association & Farmers' Institute in 1940. Nothing further is known about 1939 winner "A. Shannon" as of August 2019. 1940 winner "E.A.S. Carpenter" was Ernest Albert S. Carpenter (1960). At the time of his death, Ernest was residing at 2531 Neville Street, Burnaby (later re-numbered 6407 Neville Street).He was elected a director of the South Burnaby Horticultural Association & Farmers' Institute in 1940. 1941 and 1950 winner "Mrs. W.T. Willson" was Clare (Jenkins) Willson. She was married to William Tate Willson (1883-1967), Reeve of Burnaby from 1943 to 1944. The couple were frequent entrants and winners in flower shows around the Lower Mainland. Clare was elected a director of the South Burnaby Horticultural Association & Farmers' Institute in 1940. 1942 winner "Mrs. J.A. Siggers" was Nancy Evelyn (Duckett) (Smith) Siggers (1912-2006). She was married to John Arthur Siggers (1905-1968) in Burnaby in 1938. The couple resided at 6890 Gray Avenue, Burnaby (formerly 2343 Gray Avenue). John's death certificate lists his occupation as "Gardner - Nursery Man". Nancy also worked in the gardening business and the couple were frequent entrants and winners in flower shows around the Lower Mainland. 1949 and 1951 winner "W.S. Shannon" was John Wesley "Wes" Shannon. In 1951, Wes was living at 2325 Waverley Avenue, Burnaby. He was elected a director of the South Burnaby Horticultural Association & Farmers' Institute in 1940 and was president in 1942. He was also chairman of the PNE horitcultural show for 13 years. He worked as a buyer for Kelly Douglas for 47 years before retiring in 1971.

- Object History
- Object originated with the Burnaby Lawn Bowling Club. The "Bowser Rink" presenting the trophy refers to Kerrisdale resident Francis "Frank" Bowser. He was a member of the Kerrisdale Lawn Bowling Club, ca. 1918, and was elected President of the Lower Mainland Lawn Bowling Association in 1919. Francis "Frank" Bowser (1857-1929) came to Vancouver around 1885 and went to work with Dominion Customs, retiring in 1908 as chief landing waiter. He was elected reeve of Point Grey in 1912 and served two terms in office. His brother was former B.C. premier W.J. Bowser. (see Obituary in The Vancouver Sun - 26 Sep 1929).

- Trophy with a turned wood base. The trophy is electro-plated britannia metal, style number 3406 (?), made by the W. M. A. Rogers Co., as marked on the underside of the trophy. The cup is engraved: ANNUAL CHALLENGE CUP PRESENTED TO THE SOUTH BURNABY HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION CHRYSANTHEMUM BRANCH BY THE JAPANESE & CANADIAN CHRYSANTHEMUM SOCIETY 1940 The wood base has a dark brown finish and has two shields mounted on it, engraved: J.A. SIGGERS 1940 and H. L. KAY 1941

Directory gives the couple's address as 2067 Jubilee Avenue, Burnaby (later 7267 Jubilee Avenue). In addition to flowers, Herman also cultivated award winning raspberries, apples, scarlet runner beans, and other vegetables.

The trophy was presented at the 1893 annual exhibition of the Royal Agricultural and Industrial Society of British Columbia at New Westminster, Sept. 26th to 29th, 1893. - The trophy is a tall slim silver cup with a handle either side. It is mounted on a round wooden base. There are a number of small shields around base in two rows. They indicate the winners from 1938 to 1957. One of the shields is loose. The cup is tarnished. It was presented by the Oak Theatre for the best plant at the B.A.C.A. flower show.

- Object was presented by the Oak Theatre for the best plant at the Burnaby Amateur Chrysanthemum Association (B.A.C.A.) flower show. It was won by the donor, Alfred Preston, in 1948 and 1957. The B.A.C.A. started in 1937.

- Hand tools used by John Yanko in his business as a tile setter. Annie D. Basiuk (later Yanko) was born on February 25, 1902 in Sheho, Saskatchewan (formerly Sheho, North West Territories). Daniel "Dan" Yanko was born in Kobilnicha, Ukraine in 1887 and immigrated to Canada in May or June of 1905. Daniel Yanko married Annie D. Basiuk and had thirteen children together. Their son, John Ivan Yanko was born on the family farm, near Kelliher, Saskatchewan, on June 27, 1923. In grade six, John was pulled out of school to help support the family. Eugenia “Jenny” Haresomovych (later Carman) was born August 8, 1904 in Galecia, Austria. She came to Canada in 1928, when her parents sent her to live with the Austrian consular in Halifax. A year later, she was in The Pas with Albert Edward Carman, with whom she would have three children. Their daughter, Leida Doria "Lillian Doris" Carman was born in The Pas, Manitoba March 24, 1929. Eugenia “Jenny” (Haresomovych) Carman later re-married Joseph Nagy who was born in Hungary in October 3, 1900. Jenny, Joseph and the children moved to Nelson, British Columbia, where Joseph worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway. At the age of twenty, John Yanko met his future wife Lillian Doris Carman while visiting relatives in Burnaby. Lillian received a rail pass because of her dad’s employment with the CPR and at fourteen had gone to visit her Godmother in Burnaby. John Ivan Yanko and Leida Doria "Lillian Doris" Carman were married October 16, 1948 in Nelson, British Columbia and moved into the basement of John’s sister’s house on Union Street. Lillian began working at the downtown Woodward’s store as a cashier in 1948. In 1950, the young couple bought property at 7385 (later renumbered 7391) Broadway in Burnaby and began constructing a house as they could afford it. Knowing she’d be let go if she was pregnant, when Lillian was expecting her first child, Jenny sewed her several versions of the same outfit; they all used the same material, but each was a little bit larger than the last to accommodate her expanding girth. Rhonda, born in 1953 and Charmaine, born in 1955, grew up in the Broadway home. They attended school at Sperling Elementary, and later at Burnaby North high school. Lillian left her job to be a stay-at-home mom when Rhonda was born, but that changed in 1963 when John and Charmaine were in a car accident that left John temporarily unable to work. Joseph Nagy died April 20, 1962; his wife Eugenia “Jenny” (Haresomovych) (Carman) Nagy passed away August 14, 1985. Daniel "Dan" Yanko died in 1976; his wife Annie D. (Basiuk) Yanko died in 1997. - Obtained from the Bridge Studio Burnaby circa 2006. The Bridge Studios was built in 1987 on 15 acres of land that was formerly part of the Dominion Bridge bridge-building plant. From 1930 until the mid 1970s, Dominion Bridge constructed steel structures ranging from portions of the Golden Gate and Lions Gate Bridges to holding tanks for pulp mills. Several of the Dominion Bridge buildings were re-used by the studio, including the Cafeteria Building, the Boiler House, and the Compressor Building. In the mid-1970s filming began on a temporary basis in unused portions of the plant. In 1987, after lobby efforts by local film industry unions, guilds, and suppliers, the Government of British Columbia agreed to invest in renovating the site to create a permanent studio facility in order to ensure that BC had a stable base of operations for film production. The Bridge Studios, the first dedicated studio facility in Vancouver, opened for business in 1987 with television series "MacGyver" and the feature film "Stakeout" among the first productions to have used the facility.

- Object History
- The Citizens Against Transmission Towers (CATT) was a grassroots organization that was formed in 1994 by resident on either side of Boundary Road in Vancouver and Burnaby. The power lines were put up all along half of Boundary Road in 1948 as a result of an urgent need by Vancouver and Burnaby city councils. At the time, they were not built to the current (1990s) safety standards, as they were intended to be temporary. The group was concerned about the safety of the old structures as well as about the health concerns sometimes associated to power lines.

The webinar is the first in a series of six webinars presented in partnership by Burnaby Village Museum and Burnaby Public Library. The live webinar was also made available on the Burnaby Village Museum's facebook page. Community members were invited to participate by bringing questions during the interactive online sessions. In this webinar, Jane Lemke shares photographs and stories about the history of the Burnaby Village Museum as it turns 50 years old. Lemke and past staff talk about the early development of the Museum, large restoration projects throughout the years and recent initiatives to highlight histories of Burnaby's marginalized communities. In a pre-recorded interview, Richard and Deirdre Lott share their experiences as the first director and curator of Heritage Village (now Burnaby Village Museum) when it opened in the 1970s. The interview is supported with photographs of the early days of the museum including original presentation drawings by Rudy Kovach, construction of the village, buildings and exhibits. The couple speak to the challenges of the time period including the acquisition of artifacts to create exhibits within the buildings. John Adams, former curator and executive director of Burnaby Village Museum between 1974 and 1979 shares his story and experiences over the years. John supports his talk with photographs of collections, exhibits, special events and programs during his time at Heritage Village. John talks about the acquisition of buildings and artifacts that were added to the site during his time as curator. Buildings mentioned include, the Village Church and Ofuro that were built on site and Bell’s Dry Goods, Tom Irvine’s house, the Royal Bank that were moved to the site. Artifacts mentioned include, contents purchased from the Way Sang Yuen Wat Kee & Co. Chinese Herbalist shop in Victoria to support a new exhibit inside Heritage Village, a steam donkey and saw mill equipment from the Anderson Sawmill in Powell River and the appraisal of the Lubbock farm house and buildings considered for acquistion. Jim Wolf shares a slide show of his personal experiences of being involved with the museum in the eighties and nineties. Jim begins his story with first being recruited as a teen volunteer in 1980. He speaks about the mandate that was introduced in 1980 to have a living “outdoor museum” of the lower mainland with a special emphasis on Burnaby with a static portion of the museum supported by collections of genuine Burnaby artifacts. Jim talks about his experiences as a staff member working with collections and exhibits, working as an education assistant helping to facilitate public programs and as a curatorial assistant to help catalogue artifacts. Jim also talks about his involvement with the Burnaby Historical Society, his contribution as a historic researcher in publishing local books on the history of Burnaby as well as his involvement in the Heritage Inventory of Burnaby in 1985 which help lead to the eventual acquisition and restoration of the Love farm house by the Burnaby Village Museum. In the last part of the presentation Jane Lemke speaks about the history of the museum over the last twenty years. Jane highlights some of the changes to the museum including the restoration of the Interurban Tram 1223, free admission to the site that was introduced for the 40th anniversary in 2011 and the renovation of the Chinese Herbalist shop exhibit. Following the presentation, Jane Lemke chats with the presenters about the evolution of the museum over the last 50 years and the group answers questions from the attendees.
- History
- Jane Lemke has worked in various museums in the Lower Mainland and has been the Curator at Burnaby Village Museum since 2019. Her educational background includes a Master of Arts degree in History and a Master of Museum Studies degree. Her research focus has been on trauma and memory and its role in shaping Canadian identity. She loves sharing memories and stories of Burnaby with the public. Jane sits on the Council of the BC Museums Association and is the Chair of the BC Museums Association Professional Development and Education Committee. Richard “Dick” Lott was the first director for Heritage Village (now Burnaby Village Museum) when it opened in 1971. Dick worked as a designer for architecture firm, Hopping, Kovach and Grinnell who won the competition for the design of Heritage Village. Dick was hired to manage the project and then became an acting director of Heritage. Dick continued to work as director until the spring of 1972 when he returned to work for Hopping, Kovach, Grinell. Dick worked on various projects including; Museum of Anthropology working with Arthur Erickson; museum designer for the EXPO’86 pavilion and was the head of exhibits to build Science World after EXPO; project manager for the World’s Fair in Spain – Expo ‘92; Vancouver Aquarium (1960s); Communications Museum in Brantford, Ont.; International Science Centre in Amsterdam; National War Museum and his last project working in Hawaii for NASA. Deirdre (Stuckey Norman) Lott was hired in 1971 as the first curator for Heritage Village (now Burnaby Village Museum) working under the direction of Richard Lott. Deirdre was first hired under the Corporation of the District of Burnaby’s Local Initiatives Program (LIP) and was a University of British Columbia graduate student who worked at Museum of Anthropology. Deirdre went on to work in Public Relations and Education in Museums and was the Public Program Coordinator for Museum of Vancouver. Deirdre Norman married Richard Lott in 1976. Deirdre left the Museum of Vancouver after their first child was born. Deirdre continued her career working as a freelance contractor in Continuing Education in Introductory Anthropology. John Adams has a BA in history from UBC and a Masters degree in Museology from the University of Toronto. He worked at Burnaby Village from 1974 to 1979, serving three years as Curator and two years as Executive Director. He then went to the Royal BC Museum as Provincial Museums Advisor before becoming a Manager with the BC Heritage Branch. Since 2000 he has operated Discover the Past, a heritage business in Victoria that specializes in historical research, writing and conducting walking tours and lectures. He also taught museum studies for twenty-eight years at Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria. He is the author of seven books, most recently Chinese Victoria: A Long and Difficult Journey. Jim Wolf worked at the Museum starting in 1980, eventually holding many roles within the City of Burnaby and recently retired from his long serving role as the Senior Long Range Planner. He guided the city’s heritage program from 1989 and this year was honoured with a lifetime achievement award by Heritage BC. As a historian and heritage consultant he has authored and contributed to award-winning books on Burnaby, New Westminster and historic architecture. He is currently working on a number of projects including a biography of architect Samuel Maclure and a book documenting the architectural design and construction history of Craigdarroch Castle in Victoria, B.C.

- The TV tray is made of white metal with plastic clips on the underside that lock onto the folding metal legs. The double legs are pivotted in the centre to form an "X" when open and supporting the tray and to lie flat when closed with the tray attached to one set of legs.

- Bought c. 1950 by the Yanko family. Used by Rhonda and Charmaine Yanko when they were growing up. Later used by Charmaine Bayntun (nee Yanko) children when they were small.

- Full-keyboard upstrike Smith Premier No. 2 typewriter made by Smith Premier Typewriter Company, 1904. It features a double keyboard, with rows of lowercase letters at the bottom and uppercase letters at the top. It includes typewriter, carrying lid, wooden platform, two typewriter ribbon spools, and an unrelated box that holds the spools.

- Donor found object in an old building in Vancouver, ca. late 1950's - early 1960's. Smith Premier manufactured double keyboards until 1921, long after their competitors had introduced the "Shift" key which allowed each key to type both an upper and lowercase letter.

- Blickensderfer No. 7 portable typewriter in a wooden case, 1897.
- Object History
- The Model 7, offered in 1897, became the deluxe version of the basic design. Blickensderfer typewriters feature a keyboard with a "DHIATENSOR" layout (the sequence of letters on the bottomr row), even though the QWERTY keyboard was becoming the standard keyboard layout. Instead of typebars, they had a type cylinder which allowed an operator to change the typeface by replacing the cylinder.

- Series consists of a collection of films and sound recordings created by students at the UBC of British Columbia's Asian Canadian & Asian Migration Studies department and Initiative for Student Teaching and Research in Chinese Canadian Studies in partnership with Burnaby Village Museum. Recordings include Chinese Canadian research generated for an online audience in 2020. The fonds includes a series of three "Back to the Roots" podcasts titled "A Family Farm", "Where is your food from?" and "Chinese Herbalist Shops and TCM" around the topics of family-operated farming, Chinese contributions to early local and alternative food systems and Traditional Chinese Medicine and herbalism; two interviews (conducted as research for podcasts) with Chinese Medicine Dr. John Yang and Burnaby Village Museum researcher and PHD candidate, Denise Fong ; and a two part video series titled a "A Taste of History" with part one, "Scraps and Dragons" showcasing the history of Chinese Canadian Chop Suey restaurants and part two "A Pig's Tale" about the history of Chinese pig farms also known as "Piggeries" in Burnaby. Films include versions with English, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese subtitles. - History
- Beginning in 2018, students at the University of British Columbia's Asian Canadian & Asian Migration Studies department and Initiative for Student Teaching and Research in Chinese Canadians Studies have participated in a research partnership with Burnaby Village Museum, which focuses on learning more about the stories of Asian Canadians who have lived in Burnaby. Each summer, a cohort of student interns have worked at or with the Museum to expand our research goals. In the first two years of the project, student interns created historical interpretive experiences in the museum including "a Story Garden" and "Story Harvest Station". These were intended to educate museum visitors on Chinese Canadian history in the market garden site. In 2019, interactive tours were designed and led by the team of interns. These included a three panel art piece of early Chinese Canadian industries, a visual compilation of migration stories involving a comic strip and family friendly activities. In 2020, due to the restrictions of COVID-19, the interns were asked to create virtual experiences to reimagine Burnaby Village Museum's historical Chinese Canadian programming in remote online spaces. Debbie Liang and Joty Gill (UBC alumni and graduates of Dr. Henry Yu's 2019 summer ACAM 390A Global Seminar to Asia) returned to work with Burnaby Village Museum to create two short films showcasing the history of Chinese Canadian Chop Suey restaurants and Piggeries in Burnaby. Rose Wu and Wei Yan Yeong (students in the UBC Faculty of Land and Food Systems) created a three episode podcast series "Back to the Roots" which delved into the topics of family-operated farming businesses, Chinese contributions to early local and alternative food systems, and Traditional Chinese Medicine and herbalism. During their research the interns interviewed Dr. John Yang and Burnaby Village Museum researcher and PHD candidate, Denise Fong.
