- Description
- Bell’s Drygoods Store is a typical commercial false front, single storey, wood-frame building that has been relocated to the Burnaby Village Museum.
- Heritage Value
- The value of the Bell’s Drygoods Store lies in its significance as one of the last remaining intact false front retail structures of its time to survive in Burnaby. Additionally, it remains as one of East Burnaby’s few surviving early commercial buildings and is representative of other typical commercial structures of the period. Originally located on Sixth Street in East Burnaby, in a small commercial district that served residents located along the streetcar line between New Westminster and Edmonds, its proximity to the streetcar served to draw customers into the store. This store also served as the location of the East Burnaby Post Office, one of a number of local post offices located throughout the municipality during the early twentieth century. Clifford Tuckey constructed the building in 1922, with a small lean-to structure on the back housing a kitchen and bedroom. The store was sold soon afterwards to William and Flora Bell, who then lived and worked here for a number of years. It represents a traditional relationship of the owner’s home to the store during this period, indicating the modest means of the owners and their commitment to running the business. The building was later sold to Maurice and Mildred Whitechurch, who ran it for many years as a hardware store. In 1974, the structure was relocated to its present site at the Museum. The heritage value for this structure also lies in its interpretive value within the Burnaby Village Museum. The site is an important cultural feature for the interpretation of Burnaby’s heritage to the public. Between 1993 and 1996 the building was restored to its 1925 appearance.
- Defining Elements
- The character defining features of Bell’s Drygoods Store include its: - rectangular form and simple massing - commercial false front parapet - front gable roof with cedar shingle cladding - horizontal lapped wooden siding - recessed main central entrance flanked by large storefront display windows - V-joint tongue-and-groove wood interior paneling - interior separation between commercial and residential space

- Object History
- Salvation Army Guide uniform dress belonging to Virginia Blake, early 1960s. From the 6th Vancouver Salvation Army Guides on Hastings Street. Salvation Army was affiliated with Girl Guides (1937) of Canada until 1998. Worn with brown leather belt, beret, folded triangular company tie. The three white stripes on the right breast pocket indicate that wearer was a company leader. The more stripes you had, the higher your rank. A single white stripe, sewn down the center of the pocket, would have indicated that she was a patrol seconder. Two stripes would indicate that she was a patrol leader. White adhesive tape was used so that the guider didn’t have to unstitch and re-sew the stripes as they gained rank.

- Description
- Trapezoidal shaped, coiled cedar root basket with cedar slat foundation. Finished with an overcast rim with root foundation. Design elements missing from one side of the basket, which is uncommon but has been seen on cradles from the Mount Currie area (Interior Salish: Lil'wat). It was perhaps the side that rests on the wearer's back. Steeply angled sides.
- Coast Salish: Sḵwx̱wú7mesh? Interior Salish: Stl’atl’imx: Lil’wat?
- Object History
- The donor reported that the baskets were traded in the early 1920s for clothes by the donor's mother, who lived in North Vancouver. Her mother told her the "Capilano Indians" used to go door to door with their baskets in North Vancouver.
- Design elements missing from one side of the basket – possibly the side that would have rested against the owner’s back.
- Steeply angled sides keep berries from crushing those at bottom of basket. Work baskets have sides that are more rounded.
- Baskets like these were used with a woven tumpline (wool strap) that was worn against the forehead, while basket was carried on back.

- The Big Bend Neighbourhood in Burnaby maintained its status as an important agricultural area in the City in the years following 1955 and it also solidified its role as a prime industrial and commercial district. In 1972, the Big Bend Development Plan was adopted by Council and soon thereafter, approximately 620 acres of land were incorporated into the Agricultural Land Reserve. These lands have been set aside for agricultural and limited recreation purposes. By the 2000s, 160 acres of land were considered highly productive agricultural areas, and over 400 acres of land had been secured as parkland, including the Fraser Foreshore Park. The area also developed large commercial and industrial districts including those at Marine Way/Boundary, the Glenlyon Estates, Riverfront Business Park, Burnaby Business Park, and Glenwood Industrial Estates.

- In February 1965, the Planning Department presented to Burnaby Council a preliminary Development Plan entitled "Pacific Sports Centre," for the area immediately west of Burnaby Lake. This report proposed a conceptual plan for a comprehensive range of indoor and outdoor sporting facilities adjacent to Burnaby Lake. The idea was accepted by Council and led to the construction of the Burnaby Lake Rink beside the C.G. Brown Pool. In 1973, Burnaby and New Westminster jointly hosted the Canada Summer Games for which a rowing course and pavilion were built at Burnaby Lake and the success of the games and the sports facilities added within Burnaby Lake Park provided further stimulus for the creation of the sports and recreation facilities at this site.

- Commercial building.
- Heritage Value
- This one-storey commercial block retains its original division into three retail units. An eclectic Spanish Colonial Revival character is imparted by the use of visor roofs, covered in metal pantiles, that extend over the recessed entries. The stepped parapets are more reminiscent of the Art Deco style. Each of the three retail spaces retains their plate glass display windows. This commercial block was owned in 1939 by Mary J. Bishop of Vancouver.
