Three residents who were home at the time got out safely. Roberto Melara says he was watching television just before heading out to play soccer when he noticed smoke pouring from the heating vents. He woke his brother and boarder, who were sleeping downstairs, and got them out of the house. "I just got scared," says Danny Sanchez, of the panicked knock on his door that woke him. "We just ran outside." The family's parents and grandmother were at church at the time. "It's bad," says Melara. "Everything is in there. We don't have anything." Melara says he suspects the fire started in or near the furnace. He says they've had problems with it recently. He says the family has rented the home for seven years. They have no insurance."
