He is holding a staff with his left hand, and wearing leather gloves. Colonel Townley was a member of the the Duke of Connaught's own Rifles, and became the mayor of Vancouver in 1901. In 1912, he built the Deerholme house designed by his architect son, Fred Laughton Townley.
