The zoom webinar is the sixth in a collection of seven "Burnaby Neighbourhood Speaker series" webinars that were presented and made available to the public between September 29 and October 27, 2020. The live webinar and recording was also made available on the Burnaby Village Museum's facebook page. In this webinar, Lisa Codd takes participants on a virtual tour of Burnaby’s early electric railway system, including visits to locations where physical traces of the railway can still be found. Lisa supports her presentation with maps and historical photographs to tell the story of the B.C. Electric Railway transportation routes that shaped Burnaby. Lisa takes questions and comments from participants throughout her presentation and at the end.

- Historical film excerpts of B.C. Electric Lower Mainland trams on their various routes as well as an excursion train shot by Ken Hodgson in 1948/1949 and in 1950. Film footage is part of the B.C. Transit Centennial and includes a voice over commentary by Frank Horne and Vic Sharman. Frank and Vic worked as motormen on the BC Electric Railway. The trams are shown travelling through Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, Surrey, North Delta, Langley, Abbotsford, and Chilliwack. The excursion train was filmed in Washington State, U.S.A. The narrators give commentary, describing the routes, landmarks of the past and present, the various kinds of trams and buses seen, drivers’ protocols, and historical information. Summary: 0:00 – 16:18: Title card reads "Gastown Post & Transfer" "BC Transit / Transit Centennial" "Burnaby Lake". Footage of a Burnaby Lake Line tram from the Carrall Street depot in Vancouver to the Sapperton terminus, New Westminster. 16:18 – 30:20: Title card reads "Gastown Post & Transfer" "BC Transit / Transit Centennial" "Central Park". - Item consists of a silent motion picture civil defense film entitled, "Operation Mink Farm" produced by the Corporation of the District of Burnaby. The film footage was shot in Burnaby, B.C. on April 24th, 1955. A resolution was passed in February 1955 by the Corporation of the District of Burnaby to create a Civil Defense Board comprised of council members and appointees, whereby the Reeve would act as the chair of the board. Several municipal employees and council members went through Civil Defense training in preparation for an attack or catastrophe. The first portion of the film takes place at the old City Hall (the stone building) with uniformed Air Raid Precaution (A.R.P.) members performing civil defense exercises in the case of a nuclear war and how to care for and rescue injured civilians. Volunteers pose as the injured as they are cared for and transported on stretchers. In the second portion of the film, the local fire department and civil defense members endeavor to get a fire under control with water hoses. The film takes place at a former mink farm in North Burnaby as referred to in the title.

Lisa supports her presentation with contemporary and historical photographs and research. Lisa pauses throughout the presentation to take questions from webinar participants.

The film footage provides views of road travels with the Digney family as they drive around Ontario and into Detroit via the Windsor Bridge. Footage includes travels to Niagara Falls and the power plant, the gates of the CNE and the Toronto skyline, a scene in Quebec where the Digney car is being loaded on board a large ship, followed by glimpses of life aboard the oceanliner as the family travels to England. Once in England, the family is seen enjoying a picnic with relatives and the film cuts and ends with a scene of a polo match.

- Teresa Florkow was born on October 11 1932 in Natal BC (now Sparwood BC). Her parents, Ann and John Bowman had another three girls (Betty Ann, Marilyn and Frances) before moving to Burnaby in 1945. They settled at 1713 Frederick Avenue at Rumble Street. Teresa attended Nelson Avenue School and then Burnaby South High School. After graduation, she worked at the Royal Bank at Kingsway and McKay for 7 years. She married Arc Florkow on July 14 1952. The couple moved to 5887 Berwick Street in Burnaby and had three children: Chris, Jill and Gail. Arc worked as a furniture painter until he bought a tugboat in 1975.
