- Photograph of a group of people in front of Maude and Harriet Woodward's cottage. This house was a prefabricated cottage erected in 1904. The cottages were designed by J.J. Mahoney and architect Joseph Bowman and were manufactured in Vancouver by the B.C. Mills Timber and Trading Company. Maude Woodward established a post-office here which was operated by her sister, Harriet. Harriet also began a small private school here, the first in Burnaby Lake. The cottage was enlarged with several additions until 1912 when the Woodwards built a new house. Shown here are (l t r): Charles Frederick Sprott, Frances Schou, Lucy Christine Sprott (nee Schou), Harriet Woodward, Kitty Hill, Maude Woodward and Annie Hill.

The small building at the extreme left of the picture was George Love's (oldest of the Love's children) first sash and door outlet. He later built Love's Sash and Door Factory on the south side of Edmonds Street just west of 6th Street. The original farm was located in East Burnaby, on Cumberland Road. In 1988, this house was moved to the site of the Burnaby Village Museum at Deer Lake Avenue.

British Columbia Electric Railroad official R.H. Sperling and BCER general executive agent Fred R. Glover (his topcoat is open) are standing second from right and third from right respectively. The remainder of the men are unidentified although Councillors Coldicutt, MacDonald, Mayne and MacPherson, with municipal engineer MacPherson, British Columbia Electric Railroad chief engineer G.R.G. Conway and traffic agent for the city J.B. Rainey, solicitor A.E. Beck, chief inspector W. Whitenick, traffic superintendent James Hilton and Burnaby resident W.J. Holdom, Motorman C.C. Cameron and Conductor A. Sherman are said to be pictured.

Colourful illustrations of mandarin oranges on sides and lid of box; text on front, back, and lid reads: "CHINESE / MANDARIN / ORANGES"; text on one side in French and other side in English reads: "THE ORIGINAL CHINESE / MANDARIN / CHINA NATIONAL CEREALS, OILS & FOODSTUFFS IMPORT & EXPORT CORPORATION / PRODUCT OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA / [text in Chinese] / MINIMUM 31 PCS. PER BOX"."
- Object History
- As a produce buyer for Kelly Douglas, Cecil Lee worked closely with local farmers along Marine Drive and in the Fraser Valley. The Burnaby company was one of the largest food distributors in Canada. In the mid-1970s, Lee was asked to oversee the import of Chinese mandarin oranges into Canada. Until that time, mandarin oranges had come from Japan and were sold in the winter, especially at Christmas. When the Japanese market could no longer keep up with demand, Kelly Douglas looked to China. The company relied on Lee’s cultural knowledge to build this very profitable part of their business. Lee designed the cardboard Chinese mandarin orange box to replace wooden containers. The iconic design required no glue or staples, making it possible for farmers to assemble and pack the boxes as they picked the oranges.
