History
On May 28, 1980 the Mayor and Council of Burnaby held a tea to honour Burnaby “pioneers.” The event was held as part of “Burnaby Funfest Days ‘80” and was meant to recognize members of the community who had resided in Burnaby prior to 1930 and acknowledge their contributions as pioneers of the City. Although approximately 100 people were expected, more than 500 actually attended. Each participant was asked to fill out a brief personal information form outlining their experiences in Burnaby’s earliest days. The response was so favorable that the idea of compiling a book to capture these memories was born. The City hired a writer edit and organize the book they held writing contests to encourage senior residents to share their experiences. Other community members became involved in the project when the City enlisted the help of secondary school students to type manuscripts for those unable to do so and journalism students from the British Columbia Institute of Technology to conduct interviews with additional “pioneers.” The book was published in 1987.

Description
The Mortimer-Lamb House is a one and one half-storey, Arts and Crafts-style residence with a steeply pitched, side-gabled roof. The original cottage form has been enlarged with a later addition on the west side of the house. Located next to the Burnaby Lake Regional Park Wildlife Rescue Care Centre, the house has picturesque views of Burnaby Lake.
Heritage Value
Built circa 1922, the Mortimer-Lamb House is valued for its association with first owners, Harold Mortimer-Lamb (1872-1970), and his wife, Katherine Mary Mortimer-Lamb (1873-1939). Born in Leatherhead, Surrey, England, Harold Mortimer-Lamb immigrated to Canada in 1889. Seven years later in Vancouver, he married Katherine Mary Lindsay, a native of Winnipeg. Mortimer-Lamb was a key figure in the B.C. mining industry, serving as Secretary of the Mining Association of B.C. between 1900 and 1945, and also as the Secretary of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. In addition to his professional life, Mortimer-Lamb was a pioneer art photographer and was among Canada's leading art critics, and this house served as a central gathering place for renowned Canadian artists of the day. Mortimer-Lamb’s daughter, Molly Lamb Bobak (born 1922), became a renowned watercolourist, and was the only woman ever hired as an official Canadian war artist. The Mortimer-Lamb House is a significant example of the work of noted architect, Samuel Maclure (1860-1929) and his partner, Ross Lort (1889-1969). Maclure, who was a close friend of the Mortimer-Lamb family, was British Columbia's leading residential architect, and was renowned for his high quality designs for prominent citizens in both Vancouver and Victoria. Maclure was a leading exponent of the Art and Crafts design movement in B.C., and established a sophisticated local variation of residential architecture. The Mortimer-Lamb House was designed at the time when Maclure was in partnership with Ross Lort. In 1907, Lort began working for Maclure's firm as a draftsman, and by 1920 was in charge of Maclure's Vancouver office. Lort's architectural career spanned some sixty-years, and he designed some of the province's most familiar houses, apartments, institutions and places of worship. The Mortimer-Lamb House is also a significant local example of the Arts and Crafts style, and incorporates elements such as board-and-batten siding on the ground floor, shingled gables and leaded casement windows. It is a testament to the domestic architecture built outside of established suburbs during the post-First World War era, typically modest in scale and representative of middle-class residential ideals.
Defining Elements
Key elements that define the heritage character of the Mortimer-Lamb House include its: - treed setting with views of Burnaby Lake - residential form, scale and massing as expressed by its one and one-half storey height, rectangular plan and steeply pitched side-gabled roof - wood-frame construction - Arts and Crafts elements such as board-and-batten siding on the ground floor, cedar shingles in the gables and open soffits - original straight-leaded casement windows in single and multiple-assembly - internal red-brick chimney with corbelled cap

Residential building.
Heritage Value
This house was originally built by Fraser Arm pioneer and postmaster Johnson Alfred Skinner (1864-1941) and his wife, Mary Emma Skinner (née Bailey, 1862-1929). Johnson, who was from Sussex, worked as a horticulturalist. This is an unusual variation on the Craftsman style, with a side gabled roof and a half-width front verandah. Local mason John Pickard completed the distinctive battered cobblestone masonry, including the foundation, chimney, verandah columns and the porte-cochère. The house was later occupied and remodeled by the Timms family.

"Picturesquely situated on the south-westerly slope of the highest hill on the Burrard Peninsula is a district that in many ways resembles the early pioneer settlements…its centre is at the intersection of east Hastings Street and Sperling Avenue. Only a few years ago a dense forest covered this area and the settlers were few and some distance apart. After the war working men began to enter the Lochdale woods in quest of cheap home-sites. Today there are more than 400 residents in the district who combine to make a happy contented industrious community living on the edge of a big city yet enjoying the life offered by the country...The Community Hall is the centre of all social activities. Dances, concerts and other forms of entertainment are all there...Curtis Street runs from Sperling Avenue up to the hill, locally known as Hastings Grove. From the top on a clear day there is a view for miles around." ~ From the Sunday Province, March 8, 1925.

Two of the stations, KOMO and KIRO, broadcast from Seattle, Washington and stations CJOR, CKWX, CKMO broadcast from Vancouver. There is also a CBR station which is the Citizens Band radio. Glued inside the radio cabinet is an envelope that contains a manual, "INSTALLATION AND OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS / FOR STROMBERG-CARLSON NO. 972 RADIO RECEIVERS" and a warranty card "Stromberg-Carlson / Stromberg-Carlson Telephone Mfg. Co. of Canada Limited/ 211-219 Geary Ave. / Warranty Registry Department Toronto 4, Canada". There is also an envelope with three cards stapled together that have punch out radio station call letters. one for "CANADIAN STATIONS" and two for "AMERICAN STATIONS".
Object History
Originally founded in 1894 to manufacture telephones, the Stromberg-Carlson company also produced radio components, and began selling their own complete sets during the early 1920s. By that time, the radio craze had fully absorbed the American public, and radio pioneer RCA was cornering the market after scooping up over 2,000 broadcasting-related patents. Stromberg-Carlson entered the field by making smaller parts for tube radios. Eventually, the company applied its telephone-audio expertise to develop a successful line of radio headsets. In 1923, the company was licensed to produce the “Neutodyne” radio circuit designed by Dr. L. A. Hazeltine. Stromberg-Carlson’s first set came out in early 1924, and the company steadily grew its radio production, eventually requiring RCA licenses for several products. In 1926, Stromberg-Carlson became the first manufacturer to merge phonograph and radio technology by incorporating a phonograph jack into its radio chassis. By the end of the decade, Stromberg-Carlson sold sets with fully integrated radio and turntable technologies, and the company’s radio sales surpassed that of its telephones... The 1930s represented boom years for Stromberg-Carlson’s radio development, as it introduced new modifications like automatic volume control, improved amplifying methods, and an early push-button tuning mechanism. Ads from the late '30s emphasize other innovations, like the unique Stromberg-Carlson “acoustical labyrinth,” a complex baffle design which improved sound quality by guiding audio waves through a series of interlocking chambers, and its “Te-Lek-Tor” series, which included remote-control capabilities. “Let your dealer arrange an audition,” was the brand’s cheeky slogan, emphasizing its reputation for superior sound quality. Over the next 20 years, Stromberg-Carlson created an array of gorgeous Art Deco-inspired radios, from the sleek, ivory-colored 140-K console to the tabletop 225-H with its floral-patterned speaker grill and octagonal dial. After the company’s merger with General Dynamics in 1955, the business was restructured to focus production on telephone products, and its radios were discontinued.

Medical case, doctor's; with saws, knives, blades, cutters, needles, string, tourniquet, screw, packaging paper and wire (24 items in all).
Object History
Doctors on battlefields carried with them medical kits containing various instruments for amputation. These often included surgical scalpel, straight forceps for extracting bullets, a large amputation saw, curved scissors for cutting tissue, tourniquet to compress the arteries above the cut during amputations, a double-edged knife called the catlin and bone brush to dust off bone dust from the site. This combination Medical/Amputation Kit was originally owned by well known Vancouver physician and surgeon, Dr. Arthur Isaac Brown. In 1925, he began focusing most of his time and attention on Speaking Tours, pioneering the combination of Science and Religion that became known as Creationism. He authored numerous articles and several books on the subject. The donor's grandmother, Amanda Brown, was involved in setting up the Amputations Club in Vancouver (predecessor of the War Amps Association) and a well-known 1920s social worker.
