Description
The item would be used to package a small amount of a bulk product stocked by a pharmacy. Up until the 1950s, pharmacists provided most prescription medications by creating compounds of bulk products that were given to customers as pills, salves, or tonics. Cardboard box composed of two pieces where the lid slids over top of the bottom. Contains two brown gelatin capsules along with wax paper packing material. Commercial paper label on lid identifying original contents as "Soluble Elastic Capsules" which would have been empty. Capsules were likely compounded by pharmacist to contain as labeled in handwritten script "Quin. Sulph. / Ergotamine aa 2 gr / Strychnine 1/50 gr". Additional paper tape label that would have secured lid to bottom of box running from the edge of the lid label on each side and across the bottom of the box. The tape is marked with "B.C. PHARMACAL CO., / VANCOUVER, B. C." "REB for 50" written in pencil on bottom of box.
