- The video depicts the challenges of film maker Alfred Woo’s physical, social, and cultural transformation to a foreign country. Sentimentally prior to departing Hong Kong in 1954, Alfred was presented a fountain pen by some of his grade two classmates, a souvenir that he has cherished all these years despite losing contact with them long ago. In his seniority, he muses poignantly about the symbolism of this writing instrument and shares his wonderment about the destiny of these childhood benefactors.

- Immigrating from Hong Kong to Canada as a child, Alfred Woo easily assimilated into the Canadian way of life at an early age and has enjoyed the best of both worlds. A law graduate, his professional career included service as a Crown Counsel, securities administrator, corporate executive, and as private practitioner. He also served in the Canadian Army (Reserve Force) as a legal officer and an artillery officer before being honorably discharged at the rank of Major. A Burnaby resident for over 30 years, and now retired, he continues to volunteer helping seniors, a community service club, and a veterans group.

Reflections on Reconciliation" and is presented by Brandon Gabriel, visual arts from the Kwantlen First Nation. The Zoom webinar is the sixth in a series of six "Neighbourhood Speaker Series" webinars exploring a range of topics shared by Indigenous speakers and knowledge keepers that were presented and made available to the public between April 27 and May 12, 2021. The live webinar was also made available on the Burnaby Village Museum's facebook page. Community members were invited to participate by bringing questions and comments during the interactive online sessions. In this webinar, Brandon supports his presentation with slides and explores the following questions; If we have not changed the way we introduce ourselves to each other and this land then what are we reconciling?" and "If resource exploitation, racism and colonization continue today, how can we change?" Brandon Gabriel, mixed-media artist and activist, looks back at some highlights of his twenty seven year artistic journey and shares what you can do to tackle reconciliation in your own life. Brandon presents counter narratives speaking to the importance of: Land; Languages; Colonial Annihilation and Indigenous Resurgence. Brandon pauses half way through his presentation to ask and reflect on the question "How far back do you know your ancestors on your mother's side?". While listeners are reflecting, Brandon shares a recording of Dennis Leon of Kwantlen First Nation performing the song “True Love”. Following this, Brandon takes questions from the audience and comments on the importance of matriarchal lineage in indigenous culture. In the second half of the presentation, Brandon talks about his own art and shares examples of Indigenous artists work including: Bill Reid, Zacharias Kunuk, Marianne Nicholson; Brian Jungan and Rebecca Bellmore. Following the presentation, Brandon Gabriel takes questions from the audience that are moderated by the host, Jane Lemke.

- Brandon Gabriel is an award winning, and Internationally recognized visual artist from the Kwantlen First Nation, in unceded Fort Langley B.C. Brandon was educated at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (1999-2003) and at Emily Carr University of Art and Design (2003-2006). Brandon has over twenty seven years of professional experience as a designer, wood carver, mixed media sculptor, graphic designer, illustrator, and educator. He has exhibited works in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, South America, the USA, and across Canada.

- Ten, brown-paper-wrapped bottles from "A.S. Watson & Co." Each has commercially made brown-paper label with Chinese characters. Yellow label sealing one end of package has company name and company logo of dragon and horse. Individual bottles were originally packaged together in brown paper and tied with string.

- This item originates from the Chinese Herbalist Store “Way Sang Yuen Wat Kee & Co.”, Victoria B.C. Watsons is a member of the A.S. Watson Group, which started as the Canton Dispensary and Soda Water Establishment, founded in 1828 as a small dispensary, with the mission to provide free medical services to the poor people of the Southern Chinese province of Guangdong (also known as Canton). It moved to Hong Kong and re-emerged as the Hong Kong Dispensary from 1 January 1843. The company began trading under the name A.S. Watson & Company in 1871. Now, the A.S. Watson Group (or A.S. Watson or ASW) with headquarter located in Hong Kong, is the world's largest health and beauty retail group, with over 13,900 stores in 24 markets worldwide serving over 28 million customers per week, and over 3 billion customers and members throughout.

- box, tin, unpainted, with top; pattern of top is red background with gold circles; label is in Chinese characters. Box contains orchid pseudo-bulbs, or Chinese ground orchid (Bletilla Hyacinthina). The bulbs are crushed and mixed with sesame oil, formed into balls, and then sealed inside a wax coating. The product is used to make an emollient for burns.

Pills manufactured by Chan Li Chai Medical Factory (Hong Kong) Limited. Chan Li Chai was founded by two families Chan and Li in 1600 AD towards the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644). - The digital video tells the story of Gee Lam’s childhood experience of growing up in the Vancouver’s East End neighbourhood known as Strathcona. His story revolved around his father’s friend Harry Con who was a community activist in the Strathcona neighbourhood, as well as a volunteer “spy” for the Canadian Armed forces in World War 2. Gee shares his personal life lessons learned from “uncle Harry” regarding the importance of standing up and fighting for what is right. Harry’s community contribution had embodied Martin Luther King’s social activist principles: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” In the eyes of Gee, Harry Con was an exemplary who modeled an old Chinese proverb: “Each generation will reap what the former generation has sown. To enjoy the benefits of the hard work of one’s predecessors.” Harry’s life of selfless contributions in shaping the Vancouver Chinese community will impact generations to come. This is a story that needs to be told to the next generation to encourage them to respect and remember that the benefits of a thriving community is derived from both past and present continuous collaborations for paving long term beneficial outcomes for everyone.
- History
- Gee Lam immigrated from Hong Kong and grew up in the Strathcona neighbourhood that was adjacent to Vancouver’s Chinatown. He is a long-time resident of Burnaby. He has lived in North Burnaby with his wife since 1985. He attended Simon Fraser University’s (SFU) Burnaby campus and graduated in 1983. He obtained his M.Ed. in 2013 from SFU. He worked as a research assistant and workshop facilitator on the Elders’ Digital Storytelling project. He currently works at SFU’s Teaching and Learning Centre on top of Burnaby Mountain.

- This item originates from the Chinese Herbalist Store "Way Sang Yuen Wat Kee & Co.", Victoria B.C. Watsons is a member of the A.S. Watson Group, which started as the Canton Dispensary and Soda Water Establishment, founded in 1828 as a small dispensary, with the mission to provide free medical services to the poor people of the Southern Chinese province of Guangdong (also known as Canton). It moved to Hong Kong and re-emerged as the Hong Kong Dispensary from 1 January 1843. The company began trading under the name A.S. Watson & Company in 1871. Now, the A.S. Watson Group (or A.S. Watson or ASW) with headquarter located in Hong Kong, is the world's largest health and beauty retail group, with over 13,900 stores in 24 markets worldwide serving over 28 million customers per week, and over 3 billion customers and members throughout.

- Label contains characters that are literally translated to: "Watsons", a brand name; "hurt" or "wound", "wind", "cold", "nose", "smoke", and "snuff". When adjusted for English comprehension, product is "Cold and Sinus snuff". This product will treat symptoms due to cold such as headaches, dizziness, nasal congestion, and others. - Rectangular, wood crate with lid. Hand painted label on one side, with illustrations of plants and some text in Chinese. Original paper label on another side, with text in English. The crate has many scrapes and dents.
- Object History
- This item originates from the Chinese Herbalist Store "Way Sang Yuen Wat Kee & Co.", Victoria, B.C. This could posssibly be the packaging for the tea leaf that were used to prepare Shen Nong tea or it could be the tea that the shop owner/staff prepared for their own consumption. The same shop listed on the label is still operating in Hong Kong (as of 2018) at the same location.

- The label on the front of the box has product informtion in English: "Pang Yu Tai Lung Kee / No. 113 Bonham Street / Victoria. Hong Kong." Below this is more information on the tea. The side of the box has a painted design of flowers with a red box in the middles. The outline is in black, the top is rounded. Inside there are black Chinese characters. Text literally translates to English as: "a surname", "abundant, plentiful", "peaceful, most, safe, grand", "grand, intense, swell, thriving, sweet" and "remember, record". Chinese characters reveal the name of the pharmacist, Peng Yu Tai Long. It is written on the box that the effects of the tea are "removing sunstrokes and fevers and when taken after meals it would increase the power of ingestion".

- Description
- Dress, c.1967. Silver and blue floral lame. Ankle length sleeveless sheath dress. The dress is made with one front panel with french darts for shaping, and two panels for the back. There is a metal zipper from the neckline just past the hips at centre back, and a hook and eye at the top. The skirt is flared slightly from the hips to the hem. There is no other shaping, as the dress is the sheath type. The overall pattern of the fabric is large silver flowers and leaves with a lighter silver and blue background. It is lined with light blue rayon. All seams are hidden between the lining and main fabric, except for the serged edges under the zipper.
- Object History
- Worn by Edith Fountain to RCMP ball in Burnaby 1967. See photograph BV004.17.22-.23. Worn with stole BV004.17.3. Edward and Edith Fountain purchased a home in the Deer Lake area in 1951 at 6661 Russel Avenue, Burnaby. The house was also know as Moorcroft, and was purchased from the builder, Arthur Moore. Edward Fountain was the first City of Burnaby License Inspector in 1949, in 1952 he became the Personnel Director, when he retired in 1970 his position was Assistant Manager. Edward and Edith, who loved to dance, attended many social events, parties and balls due to Edward's positions within the City of Burnaby.
