- This is a Wurlitzer Military Band Organ, Style 146B. Built by the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company, ca 1925. The organ is supposed to recreate the sound of a 20-piece military band, with percussion instruments that include bass drum, snare drums, cymbals, and xylophones, as well as pipes to reproduce the sounds of trumpets, trombones, flutes, and violins. This band organ is operated by paper rolls based on Wurlitzer's unique, 46 note roll scale, "Style 150". Our Model 146B has duplex roll frames, allowing continuous playing, one roll rewinds as the other is playing. An electric motor mounted on the top uses a belt to drive a crankshaft that powers both the air bellows that feed the various music pipes as well as the roll mechanism. The band organ was originally intended to be used with a carousel out of doors. A perferated sheet of plexie glass has been placed over the front opening to reduce the volume of the instrument inside the carousel building. - Object History
- The band organ was purchased and restored by the Friends of the Carousel to replace the original organ that had been sold before the carousel was acquired for the Burnaby Village Museum. The Friends of the Carousel bought this machine from a collector in Spokane, Washington. He had obtained it from a closed down travelling carnival company in Reno, Nevada. They had used it with a carousel in the American mid-west.

- Historical film excerpts of B.C. Electric Lower Mainland trams on their various routes as well as an excursion train shot by Ken Hodgson in 1948/1949 and in 1950. Film footage is part of the B.C. Transit Centennial and includes a voice over commentary by Frank Horne and Vic Sharman. Frank and Vic worked as motormen on the BC Electric Railway. The trams are shown travelling through Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, Surrey, North Delta, Langley, Abbotsford, and Chilliwack. The excursion train was filmed in Washington State, U.S.A. The narrators give commentary, describing the routes, landmarks of the past and present, the various kinds of trams and buses seen, drivers’ protocols, and historical information. - Salvation Army Guide uniform dress belonging to Virginia Blake, early 1960s. From the 6th Vancouver Salvation Army Guides on Hastings Street. Salvation Army was affiliated with Girl Guides (1937) of Canada until 1998. Worn with brown leather belt, beret, folded triangular company tie. The three white stripes on the right breast pocket indicate that wearer was a company leader. The more stripes you had, the higher your rank. A single white stripe, sewn down the center of the pocket, would have indicated that she was a patrol seconder. Two stripes would indicate that she was a patrol leader. White adhesive tape was used so that the guider didn’t have to unstitch and re-sew the stripes as they gained rank.

- Belt belonged to Dorothy Pitman who was a Girl Guide in the 1st Burnaby Company. She was known to be involved with guiding from 1919 to 1931. Textual records and photographs of the Pitman family, including one of Dorothy and her sister Gwen, are held by the City of Burnaby Archives. Dorothy and Gwen's parents, Ernest and Jean Pitman, owned McKay Dry Goods and Jubilee Dry Goods.

- Note from donor: Grace Young (married name Dawkins) was patrol leader for the 1st Vancouver Girl Guide Co. from Christ Church Cathedral. Phyllis Mortimer was her second. Phyllis Mortimer later joint the Vancouver Police Department, where she served with Graces' husband, Albert Clayton Dawkins. Grace and Albert married in 1936 at St. Nicholas Church in Burnaby. Grace was the person who suggested the name Burnaby Royal Area when the Girl Guides were looking for a new name for that area.
