- Object History
- This is a Branston Violet Ray Generator. Branston’s claims were similar to those of other Violet Ray makers. Treatments are given for over a hundred ailments, ranging from abscess through appendicitis, colitis, diabetes, glaucoma, gonorrhoea, haemmorrhoids, impotence, laryngitis, mumps, pyorrhea, tuberculosis, ulcers, wrinkles and even writer’s cramp. Electrical medical devices like this one were popular for decades among physicians, irregular practitioners, and home users, who could purchase them through catalogs and drugstores. The machine plugs into an electrical wall outlet. A glass electrode plugs into the wand, produces a violet glow, and delivers a spark when touched to the skin. The strength of the spark, controlled by the voltage selector, ranges from mild to quite intense. Attachments could stimulate many body parts.

Osecki-? which entitled her to a year of dentistry work including teeth cleaning and polishing three times a year, extraction of bad teeth, free examination and diagnosis. The certificate cost $2.50. The Dental Office was in Calgary, Alberta.

- Provincial Teachers' Institute - Notepad -- [1904]. Notepad for the Provincial Teacher's Institute for a meeting in 1904 from April 5th to 7th at Pender Hall, Vancouver. The notepad was created by Clarke & Stuart, Booksellers and Stationers on Hastings St Vancouver. The back of the notebook lists the officers of the meeting and the general schedule of events.

- Lapel pin and card. Pin is round, gold-plated sterling silver. Wide white enamel border has gold "WOMENS WAR WORK" in upper part, "C.R.C.S." at bottom, and thin gold inner and outer borders. Centre of pin is pebbled gold ground with red enamelled cross, gold border. Reverse of pin has locking pin back, and raised lettering "STERLING", 'S' in oval beside it. Back is tarnished, gold-coloured. Front has some soiling and wear.

- Lapel pin, button type, round. White ground with blue border and blue "SUBSCRIBER" at top, "1918 / VICTORY LOAN" at bottom. Red-bordered flag is at centre of image, flying from pole, rope visible. Five blue diagonal stripes are at upper left of flag, blue-bordered shield is at lower right, divided into three columns by thin blue lines. Shield also has horizontal red and yellow marks. Flag is shaded and edges curved to suggest movement. "TRADE MARK REG." in white in blue border at bottom. Pin front is formed over a metal back and held by pressure. Spring clasp back doesn't lock closed as pin extends .6 cm beyond edge of button and there is no clasp. Reverse of pin is silver-coloured metal with stamping, "B CO / UNION / -H N Y" ?, symbols ? in circle. Metal of back is tarnished, white on front is yellowing. Image is poorly stamped, making border wider at right and colours in shield are blurred and extend outside its border.

- Victorian Order of Nurses (V.O.N.) seal is the tabletop stamping type which imprints the words "VICTORIAN ORDER OF NURSES" and "BURNABY BRANCH"; official; stamper is black metal, lever at top; "MADE IN CANADA" at side of base; seal disc is brass; label at front transcribes the words on the seal.

- The Victorian Order of Nurses for Canada is a non-profit charitable organization created for the purposes of home care and social services established in 1898 to perpetuate the memory of Victoria the Good. The Burnaby Branch of the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) was established in 1912 with Miss Colhoun as its first nurse. Florence Hart was born in 1898 in New Westminster, and moved to Burnaby when she was 13. Her family lived in what is now known as Hart House. Both Florence and her husband Harold Godwin were awarded life memberships from the VON (Victorian Order of Nurses) for more than half a century of service. - Edmonds Favourite Teacher - Leaflet -- [1988]. Pink leaflet entry form for Edmonds favourite teacher over the decades. The contest was part of Edmonds Junior Secondary 94 anniversary and closing celebrations in 1988. On the top half of the leaflet has a large cartoon of students on a slant pushing a teacher along. Below the first cartoon is another a man lying flat on his back with a lump on his head with another man standing above him. The bottom half of the leaflet is the entry form for the favourite teacher and principal contest. The leaflet measures 21.5cm x 35.5cm.

- Button pin, round, buff ground with wide brownish red border and green print. Around edge from left, "JULY / AUG / SEPT". Logo below 'AUG', illegible, "LI--HA" ?, then "1920". At bottom is brownish red dot at centre of "U.B.M.W.E.R.S.L." in circle. Pin is paper formed over a metal back and held in place by pressure. Clear coating over front. Back is dark metal with remains of pin clasp closure ?, coil of wire one side, lighter-coloured patch of metal around opening other side. Back is hollow. Manufacturer's stamp, mostly illegible, "--- CO" "--H.N.Y." and hallmark ?. Metal of back is tarnished, some scratches and wear on front.

- Union dues button for the United Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees and Railroad Shop Laborers which was affiliated with the American Federation of Labour. - The South Burnaby Merchants Challenge Cup was awarded to the person who won the most points at Horticultural fair. (Vancouver Sun - 16 Nov 1940). 1937 and 1938 winner "T.L. Heads" was likely Burnaby resident Thomas Laing Heads (1891-1944). At the time of his death, Thomas was residing at 2754 Sussex Avenue. He was elected president of the South Burnaby Horticultural Association & Farmers' Institute in 1940. Nothing further is known about 1939 winner "A. Shannon" as of August 2019. 1940 winner "E.A.S. Carpenter" was Ernest Albert S. Carpenter (1960). At the time of his death, Ernest was residing at 2531 Neville Street, Burnaby (later re-numbered 6407 Neville Street).He was elected a director of the South Burnaby Horticultural Association & Farmers' Institute in 1940. 1941 and 1950 winner "Mrs. W.T. Willson" was Clare (Jenkins) Willson. She was married to William Tate Willson (1883-1967), Reeve of Burnaby from 1943 to 1944. The couple were frequent entrants and winners in flower shows around the Lower Mainland. Clare was elected a director of the South Burnaby Horticultural Association & Farmers' Institute in 1940. 1942 winner "Mrs. J.A. Siggers" was Nancy Evelyn (Duckett) (Smith) Siggers (1912-2006). She was married to John Arthur Siggers (1905-1968) in Burnaby in 1938. The couple resided at 6890 Gray Avenue, Burnaby (formerly 2343 Gray Avenue). John's death certificate lists his occupation as "Gardner - Nursery Man". Nancy also worked in the gardening business and the couple were frequent entrants and winners in flower shows around the Lower Mainland. 1949 and 1951 winner "W.S. Shannon" was John Wesley "Wes" Shannon. In 1951, Wes was living at 2325 Waverley Avenue, Burnaby. He was elected a director of the South Burnaby Horticultural Association & Farmers' Institute in 1940 and was president in 1942. He was also chairman of the PNE horitcultural show for 13 years. He worked as a buyer for Kelly Douglas for 47 years before retiring in 1971.

- Trophy with a turned wood base. The trophy is electro-plated britannia metal, style number 3406 (?), made by the W. M. A. Rogers Co., as marked on the underside of the trophy. The cup is engraved: ANNUAL CHALLENGE CUP PRESENTED TO THE SOUTH BURNABY HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION CHRYSANTHEMUM BRANCH BY THE JAPANESE & CANADIAN CHRYSANTHEMUM SOCIETY 1940 The wood base has a dark brown finish and has two shields mounted on it, engraved: J.A. SIGGERS 1940 and H. L. KAY 1941

- The 1940 winner was John Arthur Siggers (1905-1968). He was married to Nancy Evelyn (Duckett) (Smith) Siggers (1912-2006) in Burnaby in 1938. The couple resided at 6890 Gray Avenue, Burnaby (formerly 2343 Gray Avenue). John's death certificate lists his occupation as "Gardner - Nursery Man". Nancy also worked in the gardening business and the couple were frequent entrants and winners in flower shows around the Lower Mainland. The 1941 winner was likely Herman Ludwig Kay (1890-1967). He was married to Dorothy Harriet Mary (Jackson) Kay (1890-1965). An H.L. Kay was appointed Burnaby's municipal assessor 1946 and Herman's death certificate lists his occupation as "Retired Assessor - Municipal Employee". The 1955 B.C. Directory gives the couple's address as 2067 Jubilee Avenue, Burnaby (later 7267 Jubilee Avenue). In addition to flowers, Herman also cultivated award winning raspberries, apples, scarlet runner beans, and other vegetables.

- Captain fire helmet from the Burnaby Fire Department. The helmet is red with yellow reflective strips around the the base. Also in reflective material is "CAPTAIN" printed in an arch on both sides. At the front of the helmet there is a patch of velcro that holds a reflective patch "B.F.D / E I". At the back of the helmet is "158". The helmet has a plexiglass visor at the front that is hinged to go up and down. Inside the helmet there is a piece of heavy fabric that would drape down the back of the neck. The helmet was made by Bullard and is a Firedome Model FX/FXA and PX/ PXA.

- This equipment was used by Mr. Whitehurst during his career with the Burnaby Fire Department beginning in the mid 1970's to his recent retirement. He was Lieutenant, a Captain and an Assistant Fire Chief.
