- Uniform dress – long-sleeve blue cotton uniform dress, four (4) black buttons with GGC & trefoil logo down front of dress, two breast flap pockets with brown button closures, two hip flap pockets with black button closures, two tab epaulets at shoulders with black button closures, tag inside collar reads: “OFFICIAL UNIFORM / GIRL GUIDES / ASSOCIATION / STORES DEPARTMENT / TORONTO, CANADA”. Wings (Brownie) sewn above left pocket. 2 year star with brown felt backing pinned to left pocket flap. Salvation Army Badge sewn on left pocket front. Three white stripes of adhesive cloth tape applied vertically to the front of the left breast pocket. Two B.C. Provincial Hat badges are pinned to the left collar point (these would not normally be worn on the uniform itself). Religion in Life badge (yellow alpha & omega symbols) sewn above right breast pocket. Gold Cord worn threaded through the right tab epaulet of the uniform dress and then hooked behind the button of the right breast pocket flap. - Salvation Army Guide uniform dress belonging to Virginia Blake, early 1960s. From the 6th Vancouver Salvation Army Guides on Hastings Street. Salvation Army was affiliated with Girl Guides (1937) of Canada until 1998. Worn with brown leather belt, beret, folded triangular company tie. The three white stripes on the right breast pocket indicate that wearer was a company leader. The more stripes you had, the higher your rank. A single white stripe, sewn down the center of the pocket, would have indicated that she was a patrol seconder. Two stripes would indicate that she was a patrol leader. White adhesive tape was used so that the Guider didn’t have to unstitch and re-sew the stripes as they gained rank.

- Pump organ, also known as a reed organ made by the Thomas Organ and Piano Company of Woodstock, Ontario.
- The organ is similar in style to an upright piano. It is a ten (10) stop organ with 73 keys. The stops would have been labeled but only three stops retained the labels: Forte, Echo, and Melodia.
- The top front panel has three ornamental panels with cut out filigree, backed with red fabric. The same style of cut out and fabric appears below the keyboard. There is a key cover that pulls out from the top panel and the two move in conjunction with each other.
- The organ includes two knee levers below the keyboard and two foot pedals. The foot pedals are stamped "Thomas Organ Co" at the bottom. The pedals appear to have been recovered with a rubber material with vertical grooves, potentially a floor mat.
- There are carved details in various locations on the organ, and the wood is stained a dark brown.
- The back panel of the organ is a different wood and colour than the rest. It could be a replacement panel. The panel is easily removed.
- Stamped in ink inside the organ is a model number "A 20404". Stamped into the wood on the back left side is "11/20"

- The toombi is made of a wooden stick mounted to a round resonator. The string is attached to a tuning key at the top of the stick at one end and the bottom of the resonator across a wooden bridge.

Neck erect, semi-tucked in head, mouth open, erect ears facing back. Colour: Light bay with white stocking and blaze. Trappings: Off-white stipple saddle bordered in gold. Yellow roses behind cantle. Two blankets in two shades of light and dark green, bordered and striped in gold. Rose in back corner of darker blanket. Two brown-eyed susans and a sunflower hanging from saddle. Green and gold inverted acanthus leaf design on shoulder. Light green breast collar, trimmed in darker green. Iridescent white shell-shaped breast plate medallion. - Songbook belonged to Dorothy Pitman who was a Girl Guide in the 1st Burnaby Company. She was known to be involved with guiding from 1919 to 1931. Textual records and photographs of the Pitman family, including one of Dorothy and her sister Gwen, are held by the City of Burnaby Archives. Dorothy and Gwen's parents, Ernest and Jean Pitman, owned McKay Dry Goods and Jubilee Dry Goods.

- The Burnaby Centennial '71 Committee was formed in accordance with the British Columbia Centennial '71 Act and was directed by the Provincial Centennial '71 Committee. In April 1970, a representative group of Burnaby citizens were appointed to the committee. Members of the committee included: Ex-Officio Mayor Robert W. Prittie; Chairman, James A. Barrrington; Vice Chairman, Gordon H. Skene; Secretary-Treasurer, Charles B. Brown; Alderman, John D. Drummond; Mrs. Joan Johnston; Mrs. Martin Dunsmuir; Miss Rose Bancroft; Msgr. J.E. Brown; Messrs. Elmer Buckingham; A.B. "Sandy" Stewart; Vic Stusiak; Fraser Wilson; Don Copan and Richard Smith. The purpose of the committee was to ensure that all Burnaby citizens as individuals, family groups or members of community organizations had an opportunity to participate and contribute to celebrations marking the 100th Anniversary of the entry of British Columbia into Confederation and further to make written suggestions of a permanent Centennial project of lasting value and significance to the community. Programs and special events sponsored by the committee included; Flag raising ceremony on January 1, 1971, New Year's Day Ceremony, parades, plays (including "Barkerville '71"), musical events, Burnaby pioneer award presentations, a horse show, lacrosse jamboree, minor baseball, volleyball, tennis, football, soccer, judo and field hockey tournaments, a swim meet, an antique car rally, Easter egg hunt, Rocketry meet, Boy Scouts outdoor action show, Girl Guides "camporee", Midsummer Festival at Burnaby Arts Centre, Rhododendrun Festival at Century Gardens, Variety show, Centennial Ball, Burnaby Rhodendrun Flower show, a Miss Burnaby Pageant, Sports Day, Burnaby Amateur Radio Club party, Centennial '71 Caravan, Centennial High School Art Contest, Sod Turning Ceremony at Heritage park Museum and opening of Heritage Village Museum in November. A sub-committee of the Centennial Committee was responsible for the development of a City of Burnaby permanent commemorative project which became Heritage Village. Sandy Stewart was the sub-committee chair who worked with Richie Smith and Vic Stusiak to develop the concept for an open- air museum reflective of a tram stop community. Architect Rudy Kovacs was hired to come up with a design for the project. Official sod-turning of Heritage Village took place on April 11, 1971. Mayor Bob Prittie officially turned the sod in front of the Elworth house before a crowd of 500. In the spring of 1971, a Heritage Village Director and Curator were hired to oversee the development of the project and acquire artifacts. Salaries were paid through the Parks Commission. The sub-committee continued to assist in overseeing the project to completion. Vic Stusiak set up an administrative structure to govern the new museum. The building of the museum was contracted by Ballarin Bros. Construction at a cost of $121,000 and work began in mid July. Trevi Construction Co. was contracted to do the finished carpentry on the project. The Century Park Museum Association was formed to govern Heritage Village with directors elected on October 26, 1971. Heritage Village officially opened on November 19, 1971 with Mayor Bob Prittie and Governor General Roland Michener in attendance. On January 27, 1972 the committee turned over the Heritage Village Project to the Corporation of the District of Burnaby. After this, the committee was dissolved and all remaining funds were transferred to the Century Park Museum Association which took over the governance of Heritage Village, later known as Burnaby Village Museum.

Carved wood text reading: "BATHURST / WELCOMES BURNABY/ SENIOR CITIZENS" is sewn to the backing board with red wool. Two illustrated colour stickers are adhered to the front, one reading "SAINT JOHN / REVERSING FALLS" and the other reading "FREDERICTON, N.B.". Adhered in the centre is a painted wood carving of two clasping hands. The center photograph is dated "1971-1981" on the front in blue ink.

- From Burnaby North Secondary School, Burnaby in the early 1970s. Handmade dollar bills were props in Burnaby North's production of Guys and Dolls. They were drawn by the art students for the musical. Darleane Hewstan was in the concert band, and she remembers the bills been thrown around the stage by the gamblers. One of the student actors in the production, Gerry Martin, played Nathan Detroit, said that the dollar bills were used in the floating crap game.

- Item consists of a video recording of a live Zoom webinar hosted by Burnaby Village Museum Community Engagement Coordinator Christina Froschauer. The webinar is titled "Ups and Downs of Conserving the C.W. Parker Carousel". The webinar is the fifth in a series of six webinars presented in partnership by Burnaby Village Museum and Burnaby Public Library. The live webinar was also made available on the Burnaby Village Museum's facebook page. Community members were invited to participate by bringing questions during the interactive online sessions. With thousands of people riding the Carousel every year, it is a wonder this 110-year-old fairground favourite keeps on turning. In the off-season, many dedicated hours go into the careful repair and maintenance of the Carousel. From cogs and gears to paints and jewels, this session covers the ups and downs of Carousel conservation. The first speaker is BVM conservator “Liz” Czerwinski. Liz’s presentation is titled “119 Parker Carousel at the Burnaby Village Museum”. Liz speaks about her role and responsibility at BVM as the conservator and her many responsibilities including the carousel. Liz provides an overview of how BVM preserves the carousel as a museum artifact and how it needs to meet current safety standards as a mechanical amusement ride. Liz provides historical background regarding the C.W. Parker no. 119 carousel and the establishment of the Lower Mainland Association of the Friends of the Vancouver Carousel “The Friends of the Carousel” to save the carousel in the 1990s and the installation of the carousel at Burnaby Village Museum. She describes the intense maintenance and mechanics of the carousel to keep it in operation and the preservation and ongoing conservation of the hand carved and painted horses and wooden carousel flooring. The second speaker is Carly Bouwman. Carly works in the area of artistic conservation as an exhibit preparator at Burnaby Village Museum and works with the Conservation Department team to restore the carousel bi annually. Carly’s talk is supported with a slide show detailing the process and many aspects of conservation work that is done on the hand carved and painted carousel horses. Conservation painting techniques are based on a manual created by volunteer Dorothy Seton Clarke. The third speaker is Michael DesMazes. Michael supports his talk with film footage documenting the mechanics and maintenance of the C.W. Parker no. 119 Carousel. Michael provides a commentary explaining some of the regular weekly, monthly and yearly mechanical maintenance and inspection that is done to the maintain the carousel. Film footage provides a detailed view of the working components of the carousel. Following the presentations Elizabeth Czerwinski, Michael DeMazes and Carly Bouwman answer questions from the attendees and comment further on the information. Some of the subjects covered include: significance of design details on the carousel horses, how the Wurtlitzer band organ works, painting and stripping techniques, running speed of the carousel, favourite carousel horses, significance of the rotational direction of the carousel, publication “A Carousel is Magic: the Saving of Parker #119 by the Friends of the Carousel ", accessibility design components on the carousel, safety specifications and guidelines, naming of the carousel horses and what the future holds for the next 50 years of operation of the carousel.
- History
- Christina Froschauer has worked in various museums and art galleries across Canada over the past two decades and since January 2021, has worked as the Museum Community Engagement Coordinator at the Burnaby Village Museum. Her educational background includes a Masters in Art History and two Bachelor of Arts – one in Visual Arts and the other in Archaeology. Her research focus has been centered around artists whose work challenges and Indigenizes the Western Canons of Art History. In addition to her work at the museum, Christina is a sessional professor of Canadian Studies at Langara College. Elizabeth "Liz" Czerwinski is the Conservator for the Burnaby Village Museum. She has a Master of Art Conservation from Queens University, internship experience in the conservation of paintings and archaeological collections, and has been engaged with the smallest (hat pins) and largest (tram and carousel) preservation activities at the museum since 1992. Carly Bouwman is a freelance visual artist and designer, living in Southwestern British Columbia. Her professional projects include digital illustrations and graphics, residential interior design contracts, and 2-D and 3-D custom designed and fabricated works of art for private and public display. She also holds a position at the Burnaby Village Museum as an exhibit preparator and works with the conservation department to restore the carousel bi-annually. Michael DesMazes was born and raised in Abbotsford. Michael’s childhood home is a heritage landmark now called the Trethewey House Museum. His Mother was the past President of the Abbotsford Heritage society and Michael himself first volunteered for the Abbotsford Museum when he was 14. Michael has also worked at the Langley Centennial Museum and for three years headed up the Fraser Valley Military Museum and Archives, a by-product of his Museum studies at SFU in 1987. That same year Michael first joined the Burnaby Village as the Blacksmith for the museums first school programs. By 1990 Michael had become a relief interpreter covering every zone in the Village and was one of the researchers for Burnaby’s 100th anniversary project. Michael is the Official RCAF Historian for Boundary Bay and Abbotsford airports and has established and maintained Facebook pages on both for the last five years. He is a long-time member of the Organization of Military Museums of Canada (OMMC). Leaving the Burnaby Village Museum in January 1990, Michael enrolled in the Canadian Forces Primary reserves as a Medical Assistant with the 12th Vancouver Medical Company. It was during this time that Michael was also contracted to research and assembly a historical collection for Nabob’s 100th anniversary. In 1996 after leaving the Reserves, Michael returned to the Burnaby Village Museum as a new carousel operator. Today, 26 years later, Michael is still at the carousel as the senior operator responsible for general maintenance, minor repairs and training of new operators.
