- From The British Columbian, March 19, 1912: "On the fringe of New Westminster there is…a suburban townsite in Edmonds. During the past eighteen months it has grown and prospered quite phenomenally. It is ideally situated, is in easy communication with New Westminster by two car lines. Its climate is clear and bracing, being exceptionally free from the fogs that are more or less prevalent along the river section and gulf shore...Edmonds, in fact, is one of the finest residential parts of the province. This is fast becoming known and appreciated beyond its borders. Elegant and substantial residences are being erected in various parts, and stores are being put up in convenient localities. The new municipal building is one of the finest in British Columbia for so young a municipality."

- "Picturesquely situated on the south-westerly slope of the highest hill on the Burrard Peninsula is a district that in many ways resembles the early pioneer settlements…its centre is at the intersection of east Hastings Street and Sperling Avenue. Only a few years ago a dense forest covered this area and the settlers were few and some distance apart. After the war working men began to enter the Lochdale woods in quest of cheap home-sites. Today there are more than 400 residents in the district who combine to make a happy contented industrious community living on the edge of a big city yet enjoying the life offered by the country...The Community Hall is the centre of all social activities. Dances, concerts and other forms of entertainment are all there...Curtis Street runs from Sperling Avenue up to the hill, locally known as Hastings Grove. - St. Albans Anglican Church is one of the landmarks of the historic Edmonds district, and has many ties to its neighbourhood history and prominent families of Burnaby. The site was purchased in June 1907 and presented to the congregation by Mr. Walter James Walker that August. Walker, a real estate developer and former Surrey Reeve, donated money for the construction of a number of Anglican churches, including three in North Surrey in 1910. Construction on St. Albans began in November 1908 by contractors Wright & Tucker, and was completed in March 1909. The first vicar was Rev. D. Dunlop, who was also the rector of St. Mary’s in Sapperton. Pre-eminent Vancouver architects Dalton & Eveleigh provided the design. William Dalton (1854-1931) and Sydney Eveleigh (1879-1947) formed their partnership circa 1902, and the firm was highly regarded for the high quality of its commercial and institutional buildings.

- On March 21, 1951 the Parliament of Canada granted the Trans Mountain Oil Pipe Line Company a charter. By May of the following year, the Corporation of Burnaby gave final reading to Bylaw No. 3203, which resulted in the conveyance of land in DL 142, 143 and 144 (Burnaby Mountain site) to the Trans Mountain Oil Pipe Line Company. Construction of the Burnaby Mountain tank farm was completed in October of 1953 and the site became operational as the first shipment of oil reached Trans Mountain’s Burnaby Terminal.

William Holmes House

- William Holmes is considered to be the first non-Native resident of Burnaby. In March, 1860, Holmes acquired the first land title in the area that would become the Municipality of Burnaby. Legally known as Lot One, Block One, this parcel was located on North Road and the Brunette River. The eight-member Holmes family built a log cabin on the lot on a bluff above the river in which they lived for many years until a bigger home was built. The log cabin remained and in 1892 was used as an isolation hospital when a smallpox epidemic hit the lower mainland. Afterwards, local health officials burned the cabin to prevent the spread of disease.

- Catherine Bertha “Cathy” Rees was born in Greenwood, British Columbia on March 30, 1903. Her mother died when she was four years old and her younger brother Lloyd was only a few months old. Catherine’s family moved regularly because her dad was continually transferred. She attended a two room school in Greenwood until grade four, then to school in Kamloops until grade 8, graduating from Duke of Connaught High School in New Westminster in 1919. One of her brothers won a lacrosse championship while at Nelson Avenue School. Catherine started at the University of British Columbia in 1919 and went to Normal School in 1923 (she belonged to the first teacher-training class). Upon graduating, Catherine was offered a position at Revelstoke High School for Physics, French and Latin which she took for a brief period of time. She then taught for one year in Victoria, traveling from one school to the other in a one ton truck to teach languages. For the next two years, she worked at Cloverdale High School. By 1929 Catherine began working in Burnaby where her father and two brothers were living. She taught at Burnaby South for her entire career in Burnaby, from 1929 to 1964. Catherine taught French and Latin as well as physical education to the girls (in the basement with two other teachers) and lived at the corner of Nelson and Victory (she still lives there at the time of this interview).
