- History
- Kapoor Singh Siddoo was born in 1885 in the Punjab village of Kharaudi, India. Kapoor was one of the pioneer South Asian Canadian Sikhs who immigrated to America in 1906 and onto Canada in 1912. Kapoor first arrived in San Francisco in 1906, along with twenty uneducated men from the Province of Punjab, India. Kapoor was the only one among these men who was educated so acted as their interpreter, manager and accountant. They worked along the Southern Pacific Railway line near Marysville, California, toward Reno and Nevada. Kapoor heard about the beauty of British Columbia and decided to travel to the west coast but times were tough with discrimination against all South Asians in British Columbia. With this information, Kapoor traveled east to Northern Ontario where he tried homesteading for a year but the extreme winter conditions didn’t appeal to him. Kapoor returned to British Columbia after receiving word from South Asian Canadians that they were in need of an educated accountant/manager for a sawmill. In 1923, with the change in immigration laws, Kapoor arranged for his wife, Besant Kaur to emigrate from India. Besant came to Canada accompanied by Kapoor’s older brother. Kapoor and Besant had two daughters, both born in Duncan B.C. Jagdis Kaur Siddoo was born in 1925 and Sarjit Kaur Siddoo was born in 1926. Both of their daughters graduated as doctors from University of Toronto medical school. His career in B.C. began as a lumberman for a large lumber mill on Vancouver Island until 1935. Following this, Kapoor established the Kapoor Lumber Company Limited and operated a mill at Shawnigan Lake before eventually purchasing 45 acres in 1939 of the eastern section of the former Barnet Mill site in Burnaby. He purchased the site from the Municipality of Burnaby under the name of Modern Sawmills Limited since there was a restriction on selling this piece of a property to a non-white person. Eventually the name was changed to Kapoor Sawmills Limited. Kapoor’s company was a financial success but was tragically razed on January 14, 1947 due to a devastating fire. A smaller mill was rebuilt on the site and Kapoor maintained a successful financial operation until 1959. In 1959, Kapoor Siddoo was considered one of Vancouver’s most influential men in the South Asian Community. In this same year, the family set up the Kapoor Singh Siddoo Foundation and with help from his wife and daughters opened a hospital in the Punjab village of Aur. In 1964, Kapoor died in India at the age of 79 years. Kapoor’s younger brother, Tara Singh Siddoo came to Canada from India in 1906 but after suffering discrimination, he returned to India in 1912. Several years later Tara returned to Canada joining Kapoor at a logging mill on Vancouver Island. Lesser shares of the mill were held by Tara and other family members. Tara and his wife, Beant Siddoo lived at Barnet between 1943 and 1945, with their family of five sons, Lakhbeer, Gurdeb, Gurcharn, Baldev, Hardev and three daughters, Harjeet (Sangha), Runjeet (Basi) and Buckshish (Sarai). One of Tara’s responsibilities was to oversee the logging camp and ensure that the logs arrived regularly from Cowichan Bay near Duncan to the Barnet logging mill. Gurdial Singh Teja (1909-1972) and Harbans Kour Teja (1912-1972) were born in India and emigrated to British Columbia in the early 1930s. Gurdial and Harbans had three daughters, Diljeet, Gurmeet and Harjeet and one son, Hardev. Gurdial worked in sawmills on Vancouver Island until he moved the family to Barnet in 1938 to work at the Kapoor Sawmills Limited. The family lived on the site of the mill and the children attended Barnet school. While living at the mill, the Teja children took lessons in the teachings of Punjabi from Besant Kaur Siddoo. Following the fire in 1947, the Teja family moved to North Vancouver.

The book contains genealogical history on both the McQeen and Standen families. The Standens emigrated from England to Ontario in 1856, starting a farm in Minesing in 1862. Dale’s grandfather homesteaded in Kindersley, Saskatchewan, in 1911 and his father moved his family west to Burnaby in 1942. The McQueens emigrated to Yorkon in 1913, and moved to Burnaby in 1941. The book includes a brief history of Burnaby including photographs from the City of Burnaby Archives (Chapter 28). The McQueen family settled on York Avenue, followed by the Standen family on Miller Avenue. The last few chapters in the book (Chapters 28 - 33) share the stories of both families and their involvement in the community of Burnaby.

- Heritage Value
- 'Avalon' and its estate grounds are important as an illustration of the cultural, aesthetic, and lifestyle values of the wealthy families that settled in the Deer Lake area early in the twentieth century. These values were predominantly those of elegant country living and leisure pursuits. The estate is important for its connection with wealthy land developer Frederick John Hart (1868-1945), who was not only instrumental in the creation of subdivisions which promoted Deer Lake as an exclusive residential development for successful families in the New Westminster and Vancouver area, but was also an influential member of this new suburban community and of the emerging municipality of Burnaby. Hart had a wide range of business, civic, and political interests: his real-estate company managed many of the land sales in the area and numerous other large developments throughout the region; he was an entrepreneurial businessman associated with a number of companies important to the economic development of the area and British Columbia; and he was a 'public spirited citizen' and an alderman for the City of New Westminster. The architectural style of ‘Avalon’ set the tone for many of the grand mansions in the adjacent residential development - British Arts and Crafts in derivation, with eclectic details, particularly Tudor precedents. Designed for Hart and his wife Alice Chapman Hart (1867-1935) by Burnaby architect Frank William Macey (1863-1935), the use of references to Tudor England illustrates the relevance and importance to the residents of the area of a strong and visible connection with Britain. The first resident architect in Burnaby, Macey was born and trained in England where he was well-respected for having published two standard texts for the architectural profession. He settled in Burnaby in the first decade of the twentieth century and obtained a number of commissions from prominent businessmen who were building grand homes in the new community of Deer Lake. He designed mostly in the British Arts and Crafts style and introduced the use of rough-cast stucco for building exteriors, a characteristic for which he was renowned, and of which ‘Avalon’ is an excellent example.

- Burnaby's fourth school was originally called Dundonald school and was opened in 1905. The building cost $600.00 to erect and was built on a small clearing of land in the middle of what was described as a dense forest. The attendance in the first year consisted of 13 children from three families: the Byrne, Woolard and Thrussell families. The school was later renamed Riverway East School and was replaced in 1953 by Glenwood Elementary School.

- The North Pacific Lumber Company in Barnet was one of Burnaby's first industrial developments and one of the largest in the British Empire. Partners James MacLaren and Frank Ross built the mill in 1889 (activated in 1899) as a requirement for obtaining 84,000 acres of timber rights in northern BC. Due to the mill's isolation, the firm built homes for its employees with families and bunkhouses for the bachelors which separated Caucasian workers from Chinese and Sikh workers. Barnet became a distinct company town with its own general store, school, post office, community hall and telephone exchange.

- Between 1905 and 1924, the Broadview neighbourhood in Burnaby was settled by almost 100 families who saw the advantage of living in an area that was served by two railway lines - the B.C. Electric Railway and the Great Northern Railway. Touted as being only a 20 minute car ride to the city centre, this neighbourhood expanded during the early 1920s with the promise of a new direct access road to the city being built by the Great Northern Railway company and new blocks being opened up on two government reserves adjoining it.

- This memorial is important for its spiritual, symbolic, and cultural associations for the former students of Burnaby South High School, and for all youth in the community. The cenotaph is of personal significance to the families of those who lost their lives. The unusual combination of cenotaph and living memorial - the tennis courts - represents a rare statement of a community's commitment to not allow the sacrifice of its youth to be forgotten by providing an active facility which draw people to the place on a regular basis rather than just on occasions of remembrance. As such it is an important symbol of a humanitarian ethic. In combination with the Kingsway East School, now rehabilitated as the Alan Emmott Centre, this memorial represents a valuable haven of green-space and recreation in the high-density urban development that now surrounds it.

- Skating on Deer Lake and Burnaby Lake was the inspiration to form the Burnaby Winter Club in the 1950s. In 1958, the volunteer group opened an indoor ice facility, still operating today at 4990 Canada Way. Originally, the facility boasted 8 sheets of curling ice, that were used to capacity by the more than 500 family and individual members in the heyday of the Club. The Winter Club was a social centre: in addition to curling, it was a popular place for banquets and dances, and a place for families to spend time together. In the 1960s, the eight sheets of curling ice were reduced to five, to make room for a sheet of hockey ice for the members’ children. Volunteer coaches were committed to excellence, and the Club produced many professional hockey players. By 1964, the Club’s first future NHL player was playing: Pee Wee player Jack McIlhargey.

- The importance of the Chinese-Canadian market gardens in the Big Bend area of Burnaby was described in 1912 by The British Columbian as such: "The Chinese farmers have been for years developing and reaping the benefits of the rich soil. By draining the land with a series of ditches, the [growers] have reduced what was once little better than a cranberry marsh into a richly productive farming area which is one of the most valuable assets to...Burnaby." Many Chinese-Canadian families who had for years leased their farms began to purchase land in the 1950s and cultivated small parcels of up to 10 acres for growing assorted Canadian and Chinese vegetables for sale - either wholesale or in the market's roadside stands on Marine Drive, frequented by many loyal Burnaby customers.
