- Object History
- This is a Branston Violet Ray Generator. Branston’s claims were similar to those of other Violet Ray makers. Treatments are given for over a hundred ailments, ranging from abscess through appendicitis, colitis, diabetes, glaucoma, gonorrhoea, haemmorrhoids, impotence, laryngitis, mumps, pyorrhea, tuberculosis, ulcers, wrinkles and even writer’s cramp. Electrical medical devices like this one were popular for decades among physicians, irregular practitioners, and home users, who could purchase them through catalogs and drugstores. The machine plugs into an electrical wall outlet. A glass electrode plugs into the wand, produces a violet glow, and delivers a spark when touched to the skin. The strength of the spark, controlled by the voltage selector, ranges from mild to quite intense. Attachments could stimulate many body parts.

player piano

- Description
- Coin operated automatic player piano. Made by the J. P. Seeburg Piano Co. of Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. The serial number on the sound board is 62547. The number 5917 is stamped inside the piano body on the keyboard frame. This is an upright grand piano in seven octaves. The body is wood with a metal sound board. The main flywheel and bellows is driven by an electric motor in the base. The piano roll and the "harmonica" are also located in the base. The original coin slot and the rotating "On/Off" switch are on the right side. The slide lever to adjust the speed of the roll is on the left just above the key board. This lever moves a friction clutch against the flywheel to adjust the speed of the roll. There are three foot pedals to add colour to the sound. The piano has been refurbished and a new electric motor installed. The rubber tubing is new, as is the controlling circuitry.
- Object History
- Based on the serial number, it is likely that this piano was made in 1915 by an off shoot of the J. P. Seeburg Piano Company, Haddorff. Haddorf was located in Rockford, IL.
- Marks/Labels
- "/ CHICAGO", embossed on the right side of the sound board. "62547", stamped into the sound board near the top centre "J.P. Seeburg / ELECTRIC / Upright Grand", stylized gothic script printed in gold on the underside of the key cover (shows when key board exposed)
