Description: Part of the 1912 C.W. Parker Carousel. Carousel horse No. 3, "Champion." 3. "Hunter's Pride" style, roached mane jumper, upright neck, head forward, mouth open, ears back. Colour: Brown black. Trappings: Red brown stippled saddle, bronze trim. English Setter dog's head on back of the cantle. Hare and rifle hanging under the side edge of saddle. Red and white blankets with amethyst cabochons and emerald facetted jewels and gold trim and fringe. Gold bridle with emerald jewel in concho. Neck collar is red with gold trim set with amber, emerald and clear jewels. Red breast collar with stylized gold flowers and trim, emerald jewels and red-gold fringe. Clear jewel in bronze breast plate.

Object History: Carousel horse. Part of the C.W. Parker Carousel on display at the Burnaby Village Museum. Name: "Our horse's name, Champion, reflects his "Hunter" design as well as commemorating VanCity's early role as a champion of the campaign to save the PNE Carousel." Sponsors: Vancouver City Savings Credit Union.

"Jumper" (semi-stargazer), back legs extended, front legs bent, erect neck, head and nose up and out, ears facing back, mouth open. Colour: Light Palomino, white blaze and socks. Trappings: Medium green stippled saddle edged in gold. Fish back of the cantle. Royal purple blanket with four yellow stars, edged in green and gold fringe. Royal purple breast collar edged in green, with gold breast plate shield medallion with yellow star on purple background. Green bridle with gold concho.

Object History: Carousel horse. Part of the C.W. Parker Carousel on display at the Burnaby Village Museum, sponsored by Dorothy E. Wrigley and Cice Brown. Dorothy Wrigley explains "The arrival of our first grandchild was a joyful occasion for the Wrigley family but it was some time before the tiny baby girl received her name, Saralyn. In the meantime, she was referred to with much love as the little Guppy." (Dorothy Wrigley decided to sponsor a horse to commemorate the birth of her grandchild, and fellow-volunteer Cice Brown asked to be a co-sponsor for her grandchildren too.) "When I was thinking about sponsoring a horse to commemorate the birth of our granddaughter, Cice Brown expressed the wish to co-sponsor a horse for her several grandchildren and a wonderful idea sprang to mind...we decided to jointly sponsor this gentle "stargazer" and name it guppy for the joy of all grandchildren." "Prior to the miracle of birth, we are all like little 'guppies,' small fishes swimming around, growing and waiting to enter the merry-go-round of this complex world. Each one of us is someone's grandchild...may many guppies experience the joy of riding this carousel."

History: The Heritage Village Museum was originally created as a British Columbia Centennial Project in 1971 through funding from the Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments. A sub-committee of the Burnaby Centennial '71 Committee was responsible for the creation of a permanent commemorative project. The concept for an open-air museum was developed with the location to be in Burnaby on lots 8,9, 10 and 11 of District Lot 79 and Lots 2 and 5, Block "R" of Districts Lots 79 and 85. The official sod turning for Heritage Village took place on April 11, 1971. In the spring of 1971, a museum director and curator were hired to oversee the development of the project and the acquisition of artifacts with funding from the Parks and Recreation Commission. The Century Park Museum Association (CPMA) was founded under the auspices of the Burnaby Centennial '71 Committee to govern Burnaby's Centennial '71 Commemorative Project, Heritage Village. The CPMA Board of directors were elected on October 26, 1971 with Donald (Don) Copan as the founding president (Don continued to serve on the Board until 1989). The Board of Directors reported directly to the Municipal Council. The association had an overall objective of providing a museum that was a historical resource for Burnaby and the region. The museum mandate was to collect, preserve, research, document and interpret artifacts and historical buildings that illustrated the history and lifestyle of the Lower Mainland in B.C. and Burnaby. The Museum focused on the period between 1890 and 1925 depicting a village lifestyle of a small community. This was achieved through the use of exhibits and displays within historic buildings and built reconstructions along with costumed museum interpreters. Many people contributed to the construction and design of the village. Architect, Rudy Kovach created the initial concept drawings and architecture designs were created by architectural design consultants Hopping, Kovach and Grinnell. Many carpenters and tradespeople worked on the construction of the buildings including Mr. Angelo Giacometti who was respsonible for much of the final decorative elements. The official opening of Heritage Village took place on November 19, 1971 with Burnaby Mayor Bob Prittie and Canada’s Governor General Roland Michener. Heritage Village was opened up to the public for a few days between November 19 and 21 with approximately 15,000 visitors. On July 1st, 1972 Heritage Village re-opened for the summer season with CPMA president, Don Copan and Mayor Bob Prittie officiating. This opening showcased further development of the site with more buildings and exhibits added. In 1984, Heritage Village Museum changed its name to “Burnaby Village Museum” and in turn, the Century Park Museum Association changed its name to the “Burnaby Village Museum Association”. Burnaby Village Museum continued to be governed by the Burnaby Village Museum Association until the end of 1989. In 1990, the Corporation of the District of Burnaby assumed the operation and management of Burnaby Village Museum under the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department and the Burnaby Village Museum Association was dissolved.

Scope and Content: Series contains records created by the Mayor’s Office during the Mayor’s participation in civic ceremonies, awards presentations, or other special events undertaken in or for the City of Burnaby. Records include: photographs, correspondence, memoranda, speeches, reports, newspaper clippings, programmes, agendas, proclamations, plaques, itineraries, invitations, and ceremonial certificates and memorabilia. As the official representative for the citizens of Burnaby, the Mayor hosts and attends numerous ceremonies and special events throughout his/her term in office. Included in this series are records from events such as the 1984 and 1997 B. C. Summer Games, the 1992 Burnaby Centennial celebrations, and the 1971 Royal Visit from Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. During the course of these events, the City of Burnaby often is presented with ceremonial plaques, letters, or certificates that commemorate the special occasions and this material is included in the series. The Mayor is also responsible for seeing that awards are bestowed upon other deserving parties and ensures that achievements and special occasions are formally recognized by the City of Burnaby. Each year the Mayor presents the Kushiro Cup Award – which is named after Burnaby’s Sister City Kushiro, Japan – to an outstanding Burnaby resident and hosts such functions as municipal appreciation dinners. The records that are produced while carrying out these activities include criteria lists, resumes, correspondence, proclamations, and certificates.

Description: Commemorative coin; gold 4cm coin with British Columbia Centennial '71 logo with 3 C's and a dogwood flower in the middle. "Centenary of Confederation with Canada. British Columbia / 1971" Reverse "Canada/ July 20, 1871" with a map of Canada with 6 provinces filled in at time of BC confederation. Coin is inside a plastic pouch attached to a card with yellowing tape. Card of heavy cardstock with a coin window cut in the middle with "British Columbia Centennial '71 Commemorative Medallion" "1971 marks the 100th anniversary of the entry of Britsih Columbia into Canadian Confederation on July 20, 1871..." Card inside white envelope with blue triangle and centennial logo in yellow. Some yellowing and tape adhesive transfer, and wear on corners.

Object History: Produced as part of British Columbia Centennial '71. The offical emblem is a stylized grouping of the three "C's" representing Canada, Confederation, Centennial, with the provincial floral emblem, the dogwood, in the centre."
