Photograph of Douglas Road as dirt road with wagon wheel tracks left in the mud. There are fences along the sides of the road, and trees and brush on both sides of the fences. The photograph includes a caption that reads: "Douglas Road, 1895. Deviation from old road, seen on right, at then, Haszard Hill, now Rayside Ave, looking eastward up the hill." An accompanying note prepared by BVM reads: "Referred to by Colonel R. C. Moody as 'Douglas Street Road' (also known as Douglas Street Wagon Road) when he proposed this link between New Westminster and Burrard Inlet. In Feb. 1861, John Murray and Daniel Kelso took a contract with the government to make a wagon road of four and one half miles. Their road reached the neighbourhood of Deer Lake and used part of the 10 miles of trail by Messrs. Brouse and Ross the year before. Messrs. Sparrow and McDonald also contracted to 'make a trail along an extension of Douglas Street to enable settlers to reach that desirable section of the country around Burnaby Lake.' All these efforts amounted to little more than rough trails. In 1864, however, John Thomas Scott was awarded a contract to put a proper Douglas Street Road from New Westminster to Burrard Inlet, a distance estimated at nine miles. His tender was $1800 a mile. The winter turned out to be severe and the work did not go well. Instead of estimated $14700 total cost of the work amounted to $26574. Scott lost his house in satisfying his creditors. Douglas Road later became Grandview-Douglas Highway. Today, part of it from New Westminster to Douglas Road is known as Canada Way."

Photograph of the house built about 1894 that Louis Claud Hill called "Brookfield." Mr. Hill was married that year to Annie Sara Kendrick, and they took up residence in the house until 1906 when they sold the property and built a new home in the vicinity of Buckingham and Sperling. Brookfield was still on the property when the Burnaby Village Museum was planned in 1971 as Heritage Village, but it was torn down to make room for other buildings on the site. An acquisition record notes that this house stood immediately behind the Elworth House, and Colonel Peers' (the donor) mother was born in this house in 1898. Annotations on the back of the photo read, "1896 'Brookfield'" and "The residence of Mr.+Mrs. LC Hill, the first residence on the site of Heritage Court. It stood immediately behind what is now called the Manor House. Built about 1894."

Photograph of a large stack of wood prepared for a bonfire on a hill. The bonfire stack is towering over a man who stands in front of it with his arms crossed and wearing a hat. There is a house seen in the background to the left of the photograph. The photograph is identified by the acquisition record and inscription on the back as Queen Victoria's Jubilee bonfire. There is a discrepancy in the records as to who the man is. Some have identified him as Bernard Hill, others, as Mr. L.C. Hill. An annotation on th back of the photo reads, "1897/ Queen Victorias Jubilee/ Bonfire prepared by Mr LC Hill/ just above what is now Deer/ Lake Ave and below the/ present Centennial Pavilion."

There are small piles of logs along the road side. An earlier catalogue record identifies this house as the Haszard house that was located across the street from the property of the Sprott Farm. The photograph was taken from Douglas Road (later renamed in part Canada Way). It is also noted that the Sprott family lived in the Haszard house while their home, named "Dovecote" was being completed.

Scope and Content
Photograph of a farm with men, a horse and wagon, and children in a field. An annotation on the back of one of the photos reads, "The foreground farm property stood at the corner of Sperling Avenue (formerly known as the Pole Line Road) and Buckingham. The white house in the left centre was the residence of Miss Woodward, her mother and sister. It was the first post office at 'Burnaby Lake' and the site of the kindergarten school of Miss Harriet Woodward. It later became the United Church. / The open field in the distance above the horse's head and people in the field is the field in front of the 'Manor House' which was built by Mr. Bateman in the 1920's. To the right of and beyond the white house partly hidden by the trees can be seen some of the buildings associated with the Hill farm on Deer Lake Ave. which by the date (1909) of this photo had been sold. The distant tall trees (center) stand on the site of the Municipal Buildings (DesBirsays Woods)." An annotation on the back of the other photograph reads, "Formerly belonging to Malcom Nicolson / App. 1908." Annotations at the bottom front of the photograph read, "L. Claude Hill's Farm, Burnaby, BC."
