- Object History
- Florena (or Floriana) Bird was born in Toronto in 1882 to Joseph Bird and Alice Pill. She married Orval Elsworth Butler, a cabinet maker and carpenter in 1928. She worked as a clerk until her marriage at age 44. The couple moved to Burnaby in the 1930s. Orval died at age 79 in 1941. Florena died in 1973 at age 90. The Orval Butler and his first wife, Catherine, likely built the house at 8006 Government Rd. Catherine (spelling unknown) died and left Orval a widower before his marriage to Florena. Florena later lived in the house. The contents of the house were donated to the Burnaby Village Museum upon her death as part of her estate.

- Walnut chest, lap desk, portable writing cabinet and desk; sides are plain; sloping lid has brass cut-out designs at corners and centre, each with a marble set in the centre; centre design is large petal either side, smaller up and down, with four smallest between; stemmed flower inside larger petals, smallest have leaf; corner designs are one large petal and two half-petals, each with stemmed flower, small flower between petals; brass settings for inkwell, square, one either side of flat part of lid; between these is box with curved lid, plain sides and back, front has brass cut-out designs; at centre, with keyhole, is petal either side, stemmed flower inside; either side is flower in triangle, with marble; lid has similar brass and marble designs to desk lid, but smaller; writing surface of desk is purple fuzzy fabric with border and flourishes; leather-lined compartment under upper part of writing surface, extends under inkwell part with shelves; upper box has vertical compartments, two larger, three smaller, lined with white fabric; pen compartment either side of smaller ones with purple velvet lids and brass knobs; desk and upper box have locks; with key

- The donor's family were early settlers to Burnaby, and he worked for the BCER as an electrician. Donor was the original owner of the property that the Burnaby Village Museum now occupies. The writing slope was used widely in the 1800s. It was mainly used in the late 1700s during colonial expeditions, and military travel. It became very popular in Victorian times for lay people and used in many homes. It provided a portable desk, complete with a soft writing surface (felt or leather), compartments for ink, pens, and paper. It was considered to be a personal item, rather than a household one.

- Cow bell made of rivetted sheet steel. It has a paper label with the word "SARGENT" and a plowing scene printed on it, glued to one lone side. The metal has been painted a gold colour. On the opposite long side is a scratched in inscription indicating the bell was donated by Claude Hill

- Object History
- The scale was used by the Hill family. The family farm stood on Douglas Road at Deer Lake - where Burnaby Village Museum is today. The homestead was built in 1892, and as enlarged in 1905. The family grew strawberries on the farm. Bernard Hill worked as a surveyor for the municipality of Burnaby. He and his brother Claude were Alderman for the municipality of Burnaby.

- Object History
- This item belonged to a family who moved to Burnaby in 1916 and the moved to 3813 Deer Lake Avenue in 1925. The house was called 'Brookfield' when it was formerly owned by Claude Hill. The family raised three children, and the eldest daughter purchsed the family home in 1958. The house and property was sold to the Municipality of Burnaby in 1959 and the site became part of Burnaby Village Museum.

- Whitechurch Hardware - Receipt -- [1968]. Handbill for Whitechurch Hardware Store at 7665 6th Street in Burnaby. The receipt was for January 11th, 1968. The total owing was $4.71 and it was paid in cash. The receipt was number 30 within the series.
- Object History
- William and Flora Bell built this dry goods store on Sixth Street in East Burnaby circa 1918. This street was a small commercial district that served residents located along the streetcar line between New Westminster and Edmonds. This store also served as the location of East Burnaby Post Office, one of many subpost offices located throughout the municipality during its early days. This building remains as one of South Burnaby's few surviving early commercial buildings and features a "false front" and recessed main entrance. The building was later sold to Maurice and Mildred Whitechurch, who ran it for many years as a hardware store named Whitechurch Hardware Store. In 1974 the building was moved to the Burnaby Village Museum.

- This is a Wurlitzer Military Band Organ, Style 146B. Built by the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company, ca 1925. The organ is supposed to recreate the sound of a 20-piece military band, with percussion instruments that include bass drum, snare drums, cymbals, and xylophones, as well as pipes to reproduce the sounds of trumpets, trombones, flutes, and violins. This band organ is operated by paper rolls based on Wurlitzer's unique, 46 note roll scale, "Style 150". Our Model 146B has duplex roll frames, allowing continuous playing, one roll rewinds as the other is playing. An electric motor mounted on the top uses a belt to drive a crankshaft that powers both the air bellows that feed the various music pipes as well as the roll mechanism. The band organ was originally intended to be used with a carousel out of doors. A perferated sheet of plexie glass has been placed over the front opening to reduce the volume of the instrument inside the carousel building. - The band organ was purchased and restored by the Friends of the Carousel to replace the original organ that had been sold before the carousel was acquired for the Burnaby Village Museum. The Friends of the Carousel bought this machine from a collector in Spokane, Washington. He had obtained it from a closed down travelling carnival company in Reno, Nevada. They had used it with a carousel in the American mid-west.

- Passport to Burnaby - Leaflet -- [1992]. A commemorative leaflet as part of the Burnaby Centennial Celebration. The goal was to promote travel to host centres to receive a stamp as part of a passport. When all stamps were collected the page could be entered into a draw. Participating Host Centres were C.G. Brown Memorial Swimming Pool, Cameron Recreation Centre, Confederation Centre, Burnaby Mountain Golf Course, Burnaby Municipal Hall, Burnaby Village Museum, Bob Prittie Metrotown Branch, The Burnaby Arts Centre, Still Creek Recycling Depot, and Bonsor Recreation Complex. The passport has been stamped for Burnaby Municipal Hall. The leaflet was produced by the Finance Department and the Centennial Committee. The leaflet measures 28cm x 21.5cm.

- 1929 Nash Roadster, two door convertible with rumble seat. Body colour is two-tone, tan and brown. Wheels are wire spoke, mounting 29 in. X 5.5 in. tube tires. There are spare tires mounted on rims. These are located forward of the side doors. All the wheels have hubcaps. There are no side curtains. The engine is six cylinder with a "Twin Ignition" system. There are two sparkplugs per cylinder.
- Object History
- The Nash roadster was purchased by a private owner in British Columbia after it came out in 1929. In the late 1950s or 1960s the car was purchased from the first owner by William "Graham" Kidd (1922-1984) of Burnaby. The well loved vehicle was nicknamed "Agnes" by it's second owner Graham Kidd. Graham Kidd was the son of William Kidd Sr. (1882-1970) and Helen Kelly Kidd (1894-1977). Graham Kidd was born in Burnaby in 1922 and lived in Burnaby his whole life. Graham's father William Kidd and his mother Helen White Kelly married in North Burnaby in 1917 and moved into a home on Oxford Street. William Kidd opened a hardware store on East Hastings Street Burnaby in 1913 and operated it for twenty years before working for Burrard Brokerage in the 1930s. William and Helen had three children; William Graham Kidd, Margaret Graham "Peggy" (McLaughlin) and Ann (Mercier). In the late 1940s, Graham joined his father William Kidd working for Burrard Brokerage eventually becoming the proprietor of the business in the 1950s. Graham Kidd married Gweneth "Gwen" Anderson and lived in North Burnaby with their three children until he died in 1984. Graham Kidd loved his Nash automobile often going for Sunday drives with the convertible top down with children riding in the rumble seat. Parts for the automobile were hard to come by and the family recalls a neighbour Oscar Johnson helped to keep it in good condition. In the 1970s the Nash roadster was also refurbished and repainted with help from Graham Kidd's neighbour John Prestas. In 1984, after William Kidd died, Gwen Kidd donated the automobile to the Transportation Museum of British Columbia, Cloverdale who in turn donated it to Burnaby Village Museum in 1993.

- Object History
- The plaque commemorates the history of the British Columbia Electric Railway in Burnaby, and the preservation of tram #1223 by the Burnaby Historical Society in 1958. Interurban tram No. 1223 has been restored by the joint efforts of the Friends of 1223 and Burnaby Village Museum. In March 2007 the tram was officially returned to Burnaby Village Museum and is currently on display, in a replica of a Tram Car Barn, at the Museum.

- Part of C.W. Parker Carousel, no. 119. Carousel horse No. 1, "Captain Julius." "Jumper" style, back legs extended, erect neck, tucked-in head, mouth open, mane swept across neck, erect ears facing out to the side. This horse may not be a true Parker. It has been considered to be a Stein and Goldstein type. It may also be a "hybrid" with the larger and different style head usually found on Stein and Goldstein horses, although the nostrils are different. Some of the body carving (mane, forelock and trappings) are in the Parker style. Colour: Percheron type dapple grey, cream mane and tail. Trappings: Black-toned stippled saddle and breast shield, with gold trim. Sea monster on the back of the cantle. Two blankets under the saddle in shades of blue turquoise, trimmed with gold and burgundy, gold fringes. Blue breast collar, burgundy trim. Steel colour armour on shoulder and lower blanket. Blue turquoise bridle with gold concho and amber jewel. Clear and amber, round or square facetted jewel.

- Carousel horse. Part of the C.W. Parker no. 119 Carousel on display at the Burnaby Village Museum. Name: Originally named Julius Caesar, this was the lead horse on the PNE Carousel. It was one of the horses transported in the Wrigley station wagon to all the fundraising events, and the Wrigleys sponsored this horse that they had become so attached to. The name comes from Chief Fund Raiser Don Wrigley's nickname among the volunteers as The Captain, and Julius because of Wrigley's penchant for quoting from Shakespeare. Red and white blankets with amethyst cabochons and emerald facetted jewels and gold trim and fringe. Gold bridle with emerald jewel in concho. Colour: This horse is painted like the original Australian race horse, "Pharlap," from the 1930's. Red chestnut, white socks on back legs, white star on forehead. Trappings: - Buckskin or "new leather," toned stippled saddle and fender, with dark brown trim. Coiled lariat hanging from front of saddle, tri-colour English Setter dog head on back of cantle. Revolver hanging from back of saddle on horse's hip. Two saddle blankets in shades of muted turquoise and sea-green, with gold trim and white fringes. Clear and peridot (light green) jewels on blanket, amethyst cabochon jewels on saddle fender. Deep pink roses on back of cantle. Red tint and gold toned drape, sprays of pink wild roses and green leaves ahead of and behind the drape, ruby and emerald jewels as centres of wild roses. Yellow breast collar with bow, all bordered with red with amethyst jewels. Clear jewel in gold bridle concho and breast plate. Wild roses with ruby jewel centres and green leaves on neck.

- Part of the 1912 C.W. Parker Carousel. Carousel horse No. 7, "Vanessa." "Jumper" style, stretched out, neck arched, head tucked in, mouth slightly open, ears upright and facing back. Colour: Palomino. Trappings: Dark reddish brown stippled saddle and skirt, bordered in gold. Deep pink roses on back of cantle. Fuschia purple drape and hangings, gold trim and fringe. Two wild roses with amber jewel centres and green leaves forward of the drape. Rose-fuschia breast collar, banded with gold, amber facetted jewel in breast plate. Fuschia purple bridle with gold concho.

- Part of the 1912 C.W. Parker Carousel. Carousel horse No. 8, "Treasure." "Stargazer" style stretched out jumper. Mouth open, head tossed up, ears back. Colour: Dark bay, with white socks. Trappings: Black toned stippled saddle, bordered with red. Fish on back of cantle. Pale blue and silver saddle fender, shield with wild rose in centre and sapphire jewels. Green leaves forward of shield. Pale blue saddle blanket with white fringe, trillium flower in centre, clear jewels. Pale blue breast collar, diamond and round sapphire jewels in silver breast plate. Red bridle with silver concho.

- Part of the 1912 C.W. Parker Carousel. Carousel horse No. 9, "Mignonette." "American Beauty Rose" style horse, stretched out jumper, arched neck, head tucked in, ears upright, facing back. Colour: Grey-white. Trappings: Red brown stippled saddle, gold bordered. Pink roses on back of cantle. Rose saddle skirt, yellow drape with gold border inset with emerald jewels, and sprays of wild pink roses with ruby facetted jewel centres, surrounded by green leaves. More rose sprays fore and aft of the drape, with emerald cabochon stones between. Rose breast collar with yellow bow with rose spray, centred with ruby jewels, breast plate with clear centre jewel. Rose bridle, with emerald green jewel in gold concho. Another wild rose spray on neck, as above.
