- Item consists of a video recording of a live Zoom webinar hosted by Burnaby Village Museum curator, Jane Lemke. The webinar is titled "Turning 50: The History of the Burnaby Village Museum". The webinar is the first in a series of six webinars presented in partnership by Burnaby Village Museum and Burnaby Public Library. The live webinar was also made available on the Burnaby Village Museum's facebook page. Community members were invited to participate by bringing questions during the interactive online sessions. In this webinar, Jane Lemke shares photographs and stories about the history of the Burnaby Village Museum as it turns 50 years old. Lemke and past staff talk about the early development of the Museum, large restoration projects throughout the years and recent initiatives to highlight histories of Burnaby's marginalized communities. In a pre-recorded interview, Richard and Deirdre Lott share their experiences as the first director and curator of Heritage Village (now Burnaby Village Museum) when it opened in the 1970s. The interview is supported with photographs of the early days of the museum including original presentation drawings by Rudy Kovach, construction of the village, buildings and exhibits. The couple speak to the challenges of the time period including the acquisition of artifacts to create exhibits within the buildings. John Adams, former curator and executive director of Burnaby Village Museum between 1974 and 1979 shares his story and experiences over the years. John supports his talk with photographs of collections, exhibits, special events and programs during his time at Heritage Village. John talks about the acquisition of buildings and artifacts that were added to the site during his time as curator. Buildings mentioned include, the Village Church and Ofuro that were built on site and Bell’s Dry Goods, Tom Irvine’s house, the Royal Bank that were moved to the site. Artifacts mentioned include, contents purchased from the Way Sang Yuen Wat Kee & Co. Chinese Herbalist shop in Victoria to support a new exhibit inside Heritage Village, a steam donkey and saw mill equipment from the Anderson Sawmill in Powell River and the appraisal of the Lubbock farm house and buildings considered for acquistion. Jim Wolf shares a slide show of his personal experiences of being involved with the museum in the eighties and nineties. Jim begins his story with first being recruited as a teen volunteer in 1980. He speaks about the mandate that was introduced in 1980 to have a living “outdoor museum” of the lower mainland with a special emphasis on Burnaby with a static portion of the museum supported by collections of genuine Burnaby artifacts. Jim talks about his experiences as a staff member working with collections and exhibits, working as an education assistant helping to facilitate public programs and as a curatorial assistant to help catalogue artifacts. Jim also talks about his involvement with the Burnaby Historical Society, his contribution as a historic researcher in publishing local books on the history of Burnaby as well as his involvement in the Heritage Inventory of Burnaby in 1985 which help lead to the eventual acquisition and restoration of the Love farm house by the Burnaby Village Museum. In the last part of the presentation Jane Lemke speaks about the history of the museum over the last twenty years. Jane highlights some of the changes to the museum including the restoration of the Interurban Tram 1223, free admission to the site that was introduced for the 40th anniversary in 2011 and the renovation of the Chinese Herbalist shop exhibit. Following the presentation, Jane Lemke chats with the presenters about the evolution of the museum over the last 50 years and the group answers questions from the attendees.

- Biographical Notes
- Blythe's paternal grandparents, Charles and Maude Eagles immigrated to New Westminster in 1887. Their son Jack married Amelia Jane Johnston, and Blythe Eagles was born in New Westminster in 1902. In 1918 Blythe enrolled at the University of British Columbia, and took a Physiology class with eight other top students - his future wife, Violet Dunbar was the lone woman in the class. Blythe graduated in 1922, winning the Governor General's Gold Medal as top student. He received his MA in 1924 and his PhD in 1926 from the University of Toronto. He then completed his post-doctoral study at the National Institute for Medical Research in London, England. In 1933 Dr. Eagles became head of the Department of Dairying (1936-1955), Chairman of the Division of Animal Science (1955-1967), and Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture (in 1949 until his retirement in 1967). In 1968 he received an Honourary Doctor of Science Award from UBC Blythe was also one of the first appointments to the Burnaby Town Planning Commission. Violet Evelyn Dunbar was born September 29, 1899 in Ontario, the eldest child of John and Mary (Tompson) Dunbar. Violet attained her BA in 1921 and MA in 1922 from the University of British Columbia. In 1922 she attended the Provincial Normal School and within six months had a teaching certificate and taught at Lord Hudson School in 1923. In September 1923 she was awarded a two-year scholarship to the University of Toronto, where she joined Blythe in the Bio-Chemistry Department. She received a second MA and a PhD in 1929. Her graduate studies entailed research in pure proteins and enzymes related to the commercial production of cheese. Through this work she was recognized as one of the leading enzyme chemists in the country, being a senior lab instructor of biochemistry. Violet was one of the founders of the Burnaby Council of Women and active member of the International Council of Women. Blythe and Violet Eagles purchased property at Deer Lake in 1929 and began construction of their home shortly before their marriage on June 25, 1930. The Drs. Blythe and Violet Eagles Estate is a unique expression of the talents and tastes of both the Eagles and Frank Ebenezer Buck (1875-1970) who was head of the Horticultural Department and the Campus Landscape Architect at U.B.C. and established the plan for the Eagles garden while Blythe selected many of the plantings. The Eagles themselves designed the house as a romantic cottage inspired by the British Arts and Crafts style. Violet was an enthusiastic amateur gardener, maintaining and continually developing the garden. The Eagles were active volunteers in the local community as well as at UBC. When Simon Fraser University opened in Burnaby, they became well-known for entertaining dignitaries and special guests of the university in their lavish garden. After Violet's death in 1993, the estate was sold to the City of Burnaby. The funds were used to establish a Chair in Agriculture at the University of British Columbia in their memory.

- Florence Strachan was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1899. She met and married her husband in Scotland before coming to Atlantic Canada by ship in 1922, then from Quebec to Vancouver by train. When Florence’s husband got a job at Barnet Mills in 1924, the couple moved to Burnaby and rented a house at 2551 East Hastings Street. In 1926, the Strachans bought a house at 290 Ellesmere Avenue and concentrated on paying it off as quickly as possible. By 1931 the Mill had shut down, leaving Florence’s husband out of work, and forced to go on Relief. By this time the couple had two children, one born in 1928, and the other in 1930. In 1919 they adopted their second child, John Sheldon Jones whose birth parents had died of influenza. - History
- George Jeffery was a well-respected Burnaby police constable, having served first as a solider. Upon joining the police force in 1912, he was appointed to patrol the Central Park district, a position he held for 22 years. From his experiences confronting young shoplifters, he determined the reason groups of boys were getting into trouble was due to a lack of recreational activities on offer. He established the Burnaby Athletics Association in an old barn behind the Royal Oak Hotel to combat this, turning it into a competitive boxing ring and gym. George and his wife Harriet lived most of their married life in Central Park district with their three daughters: Patricia, a teacher in Burnaby prior to her marriage; Winnifred, Burnaby's 1929 May Queen; and Elsie who excelled at badminton. Patricia married William Poole; Winnifred married Fred Shaughnessy; and Elsie married Art Winteford. In 1935, when the BC Provincial police replaced the Burnaby Police, George quit the force in order to stay in Burnaby and worked at Oakalla Prison farm. He retired in 1945.
