Description
belt, Girl Guides; brown leather belt with silver metal G.C.G. trefoil buckle; size 30; buckle is adjustable; one strap with silver metal leash hook holding a small, blue Girl Guide branded pencil. Handwritten text in ink is illegible.
Object History
Salvation Army Guide uniform dress belonging to Virginia Blake, early 1960s. From the 6th Vancouver Salvation Army Guides on Hastings Street. Salvation Army was affiliated with Girl Guides (1937) of Canada until 1998. Worn with brown leather belt, beret, folded triangular company tie. The three white stripes on the right breast pocket indicate that wearer was a company leader. The more stripes you had, the higher your rank. A single white stripe, sewn down the center of the pocket, would have indicated that she was a patrol seconder. Two stripes would indicate that she was a patrol leader. White adhesive tape was used so that the guider didn’t have to unstitch and re-sew the stripes as they gained rank.

Description
Bodice, c.1870s. Pink and brown shot satin silk brocade with all over pattern of small flower buds in darker shade. Three quarter length sleeves, standing collar, buttoned front, pleated and flared at waist. The standing collar is about four centimetres tall, and closes at centre front with a hook and eye. The centre front of the bodice closes with buttons two centimetres apart the whole way down. The first thirteen are the original metal ball buttons, but the last eleven are flat brown plastic replacement buttons. There is also a small pocket in the left side front. The sleeves are gathered somewhat at the caps, and are left un-fitted on the arm. The front of the bodice is shaped with two darts on each side, each with a whale bone inserted into them. The front of the bodice points down in a deep V shape. The back has three panels for each side, with a bone in each of the two seams closest to the sides and one at centre back. At the bottom centre back, there is a heavily pleated piece meant to fan out over a bustle. Inside the bodice, it is lined with beige cotton twill, with a green cotton facing along the inside of the neckline and centre fronts. The twill tape binding over the back bottom pleated addition and the seams are whip-stitch finished.

Description
Bodice, c.1890s. Brown silk and cotton bengaline. Long fitted sleeves with small shoulder puff, burnt out brown velvet cuffs, basque cut, tails in back. This bodice has a very closely fitting neck, but no collar. The sleeves are close fitting except for a small puff on the shoulders: a shadow of the gargantuan puffed sleeves that dominated the 1890s. The cuffs are made with a burnt out silk, a velvet paisley pattern on a gold silk background. The front of the bodice is undecorated, but there are loose threads from decoration that was once tacked on either side of the centre front opening. At the back, the four back panels extend independently from the end of the bodice to form tails with square ends. Inside, the bodice is lined with beige patterned cotton: white tulips under a pattern of squares formed with alternating blue and red dotted lines. There are seven bones and a blue and white striped belt at the waist that closes with a hook and eye. The centre front of the bodice used to close with buttons, but they have been removed.

Description
Bodice and skirt, c.1900. Brown cotton, black lace trim. High collar, low curved yoke, pouter pigeon front. Skirt has two bands and lace at the bottom, flounced in back. The high stand collar is covered in black lace, which extends in a wide curved yoke on the bodice. Beneath that there is a flounced band that splits at centre front and back, with a lace trimmed bow at centre front. The main bodice section has gathering at the centre front beneath the yoke and along the bottom, creating a puffed pouter pigeon front as the bottom front dips down as well. The back lies flat with pin tucks that fan out from the centre bottom. The sleeves have pin tucks coming from the shoulder on the outside edge, that end at the forearms. They are gathered to the cuffs as bishop sleeves. The lace trimmed cuffs have placket openings, and close with a hook and eye. The skirt has five gores extending from a small waistband, with two darts for shaping. At calf level, there is a band of black lace trim over two tiers of the skirt fabric, the bottom of which extends to the hem. They are flounced at the centre back. Under the bottom of the hem there is a band of black braided cord with a frayed bottom that protects and adds shape to the hem. Inside, the skirt is lined with black cotton. It closes with hooks and eyes at the centre back. The bodice is lined with brown cotton, and has nine bones. The lining closes separately with hooks and eyes at the centre front, and the main fabric of the bodice closes with hooks and eyes at the left seam and shoulder, and centre back of the collar.
