Autograph Book - Booklet -- [1915]. Autograph book produced by Rose & Co at 44 Above Bar, Southhampton. The book was a gift to Mrs. Orman from the Teachers and Children of All Saints Sunday School, Eastleigh, Southhampton, upon her departure to Canada. The first four pages lists all the teachers and children's names. The front cover of the book is green with two painted purple flowers and "Autographs" embossed in white on the bottom right.
Object History
This accession appears to be connected to the Orman family. Ada Leila Orman was born June 2, 1901 in Eastleigh, Hampshire, England. According to the 1915 Census, the Orman family came to Canada in 1911 and settled in Calgary. Father Willoughby Henry Orman is listed there as working as a C.P.R. foreman, while mother Daisy Marie (Harklett) Orman worked at home. Older sister Daisy Hilda (Targett) Orman, worked as a stenographer. At five years old Leila began a long fight with a crippling type of rheumatoid arthritis. By the time she was thirteen, she experienced completely ankylosed joints. Her family travelled all over hoping to find a cure, but to no avail. While living in Calgary, Leila developed an interest in painting, knitting, and composing her own poems. She began writing news articles for the Calgary Daily Herald in the 1930s, and her first sonnet published was in that paper on August 28, 1934. She had a strong interest in the arts, often writing about music and the visual arts. While living in Calgary, she became a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club as well as a member of the Canadian Author’s Association. Three members of the family moved to B.C. when Willoughby retired, ca. 1938. In the 1940 BC Directory, the family are listed as living at 407 Campbell Street, Burnaby. Willoughby died in Burnaby in 1945. Daisy Marie died in 1955 after living 15 years in Burnaby. Her address at the time of her death is listed as 407 Rosewood Avenue, Burnaby. Leila was living with her at that time. Older sister Daisy Hilda married Edgar Harold Targett in 1922. They moved to B.C. from Alberta some years after the other three members of the family (ca. 1962). Daisy Hilda died in 1972. Her address at the time of her death was 7969 Rosewood Avenue, Burnaby. Leila wrote on a typewriter with two sticks to type out the letters. She was an avid reader and was able to turn the pages with a special stick with elastic bands wound around the ends. Canadian novelist Maida Parlow French became her lifelong friend and encouraged her to write her own autobiography - unfortunately it was never finished. Leila wrote “The Giving Heart” in October of 1948. By 1952, she was writing a column for the British Columbia Saturday Magazine entitled “Across the Board” with the intention of inspiring other “incapacitated folk” to live up to their full potential, “If [she] could reach a few people, and encourage them to reach up and out, [she] should feel the effort well worthwhile.” A member of the St. Alban’s Prayer Healing Fellowship group, Leila wrote the “Christian Manifesto for World Peace” in 1963. The Prayer Group met twice monthly at one of the members’ homes and undertook to pray daily for the sick and for world peace. After Leila’s mother died in 1955, Leila’s friend Jeanie Brown kept house for her and was her constant companion. Jeanie Brown and Leila lived together for over thirteen years until an accident sent Leila to hospital and later to nursing home where she died on February 16, 1976.

Object History
Rhoda Maie Jeffers (middle name also spelled Mae) was born in July 1, 1904 in River Hebert, Nova Scotia to Albert Clifford Jeffers (1877 - 1967) and Eldora McAloney (1879 - 1978). The family moved to British Columbia in 1912, living in Vancouver at various addresses before moving to Burnaby around 1950 residing at 4254 Charles Street. Albert and Eldora Jeffers had three children; Rhoda Maie (Mae), Sarah Etta "Muriel" (later Webster) and Charles Kenneth Leroy (1906-1970). Rhoda began teaching in Grand Forks in 1922 and one of her early teaching posts included Eriksdale, Manitoba. Rhoda divided her teaching career between Alberta, Lake Cowichan, Agassiz and North Delta. In 1952, Rhoda worked as an exchange teacher in England and in 1957, Rhoda graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Education (secondary specialization). Due to a severe injury in 1969, Rhoda was forced to retire and sometime after, she moved in with her parents at 4254 Charles Street. Description
British Columbia Provincial Police badge (# 678). It is silver-coloured and has geometic line shapes bordering a circle with engraving. An engraved banner crosses the circle. The obverse pattern is visible on the reverse.
Object History
This item was a gift to Donald Brown. In 1947, Don left the army to join the ranks of the British Columbia Provincial Police force – embarking on a three-decade long career. His first assignment brought him to the city that he would eventually adopt as home – Burnaby – and he served here from 1947-1954, first as a member of the BC Police Department and then as a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman after the Provincial force was absorbed by their federal counterparts, the RCMP. In 1954, Don was transferred to Regina, Saskatchewan and then on to Ottawa, Ontario to serve in the Crime Detection Laboratories. After a year and a half spent in training, he became qualified as an Examiner of Questioned Documents and travelled extensively throughout Ontario and Quebec, providing expert testimony in such matters as handwriting, counterfeiting, graphic arts, alterations, etc. During this time, he also attained the rank of first Corporal, and then Sergeant in the RCMP. In total, Don spent over nine years in Ottawa, and while working, managed to add to his education by taking courses from Carleton University, the RCAF and the Ottawa Teacher’s College at night. In July, 1963, Don made his way back to the West Coast when he was transferred to Vancouver to be the Second in Charge of a new laboratory and head of the Document Section. He was soon promoted to Staff Sergeant. Once again, his experience and expertise was called upon and he devoted a great deal of time to providing expert testimony in BC and the Yukon. In May of 1970, he was promoted to Sub-Inspector and was transferred to Edmonton to take command of the new Crime Detection Laboratory built to serve Alberta and the Northwest Territories. By 1972, he was promoted to full Inspector. Under his direction, the new Edmonton lab became one of the most utilised in the RCMP. Transferred back to Vancouver in 1975, Don became the Officer-in-Charge of a new Crime Laboratory and took over the National Police Services pilot project for British Columbia – overseeing work in the areas of computer sciences, laboratory, communications, records, and identification sections. He was rewarded for this work with a promotion to Superintendent in September, 1975. In 1976, after a distinguished 35 years combined service to the armed forces and the police (and a list of awards and citations including the Meritorious Service Award BCPP-1950, the Commissioner’s Commendation RCMP-1951, Chief of Police Commendation-1951, and the Canadian Centennial Medal-1967), Don retired and founded his own laboratory to carry on his work in the field of questioned documents. He supplied his services as an expert witness throughout the western provinces and added to his list of associations and awards. He became a Fellow (Emeritus) of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, a Life Member (Emeritus) and Past Director of the Canadian Society of Forensic Sciences, a Member of the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Document Examiners. It was at this point in his life, after his retirement, that Don decided to become involved in local politics and with the blessing of his wife and six children, he joined the Burnaby Voters’ Association as their Secretary and in 1978 was elected to a two-year term as a Burnaby School Trustee. After his two successful years as Trustee, he chose to run as a candidate for alderman during the next municipal election held in November of 1979. Not only did he win his seat for that election, but he was also successful in defending his position on Council during the next two elections as well, serving Burnaby as Alderman from 1979 to 1985. During this time, Don also became a member of the Community College for the Retired, the Horsemen’s Society and the Burnaby Historical Society. He has also given his support to Arts Council programs and numerous other community functions over the years. In 1991, Don was appointed as Chair of the Burnaby Centennial Committee, dedicating himself to making Burnaby’s Centennial celebration a memorable success. Throughout part of 1991 and all of 1992, Don gave his time unstintingly, often attending several meetings and/or functions a day. His contributions were always supported by his wife Helen, and their work during the Centennial Year was just one example of the strength of their 66-year partnership. They were both formally recognized for their efforts when they were chosen to receive the Kushiro Cup and named the Citizens of the Year in 1992. Also that year, Don was a recipient of the Canadian 125 Medal and one year later, in March 1993, Donald Brown was awarded Burnaby’s highest honour and was made a Freeman of the City of Burnaby.

Description
Wedding dress, c.1907. Converted to day dress. Cream and white pouter pigeon bodice with lace and high collar. Full skirt and separate cumberbund. The shape of this dress is exemplary of the Edwardian pouter pigeon front, with a tiny waist to match. In museum records, there is a copy of the original wedding photo; on the back is written "shows dress before alteration to current state as day dress." The only readily noticeable differences are the absences of lace trim in the cuff and on the china silk bodice rosettes.
Object History
Made by Pattie Adelina Pearson, for her marriage to Charles James Mitchell in Gravesend, Kent, England on September 26, 1907. After, they travelled immediately to Canada, living in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta, her daughter and son being born in the latter province. Pattie moved to Vancouver in 1918, where with the exception of the period when she lived in Victoria, she lived until her death in October 1981 at the age of 101 years. She would have been 27 years old when she wore the dress.
