History: The inception of Scouting was the accomplishment of Lord Baden-Powell of Great Britain. His idea of training boys in the art of self-preservation, honesty, loyalty and good conduct has spread to most countries of the world. Scouting in Burnaby was originally a section of the Vancouver-Coast Region starting in 1910, called the Central Park Division. This was later divided in 1948 into North Burnaby, consisting of 26 groups and South Burnaby with 30 groups. It had grown to such an extent by 1957 that it became, although the smallest in area in Canada, an independent Region consisting of eight Districts of a total of 71 groups. By 1994, the decline in membership resulted in a reduction to three Districts.

Heritage Value: In 1908, construction began on the British Columbia Electric Railway Eburne tramline which was to connect Eburne (now known as Marpole) with New Westminster. It opened on September 15, 1909 and its tracks were built across the bog of the Fraser Arm district with little regard to the fact that virtually no one lived there. However, within one year an hourly passenger service, a milk train and three-times weekly freight service used this level fast-running connector. With the completion of the Chilliwack interurban line and various other steam railroads which were funnelled onto this line it became one of the most important industrial freight lines in the Lower Mainland.

Scope and Content: Recording is of an interview with Maureen Olofson conducted by Kathy Bossort. Maureen Olofson was one of 23 participants interviewed as part of the Community Heritage Commission’s Burnaby Mountain Oral History Project. The interview is mainly about Maureen Olofson’s memories of growing up on her parent’s Burnaby Mountain mink ranch between 1942 and 1950 and about the operation of the farm. She also talks about her parents’ history, her teaching career, and her thoughts about the beauty and value of Burnaby Mountain’s natural area.

Biographical Notes: Maureen Olofson was born 1938 in Glote, Harjedalen, Sweden, to Axel (1906-1998) and Kerstin Margareta (1906-1980). Axel and Kerstin Olofson, who had separately immigrated to Canada in 1928 and 1913 respectively, married in Canada and then returned to Sweden where Maureen was born. They moved to Burnaby in 1942 with their daughters Maureen and Anita Lea, and bought land and a mink ranch on Burnaby Mountain with their partners Gus Skofteby and Karin Ericksson (Kerstin’s sister). The GAK Fur Farm, located in the old Hastings Grove subdivision on 4th Avenue near Curtis Street, was one of the largest mink ranches in BC, an award winning operation with over 1200 mink animals. In 1950 the partners sold the land and the Olofson family moved to rented homes on Sperling Avenue. In 1952 Axel sold the last of his minks and opened a sporting goods store on Hastings Street. In 1954 the family moved to North Vancouver where Axel Olofson reestablished his sports business. Maureen attended Sperling Avenue School from Gr. 1 to Gr. 8 and Burnaby North High School to Gr. 11, completing school in North Vancouver, before going to UBC where she trained as a teacher. She returned to Burnaby in 1977 to teach, retiring in 1997. She is a volunteer with the Swedish Canadian Rest Home Association and the Dania Homes Society. Maureen continues to enjoy activities on Burnaby Mountain and works toward preserving the natural beauty of the mountain.

Scope and Content: Collection consists of photographs of train locomotive "Old Curly" along with photographs of other locomotives. Photographs of "Old Curly" were taken during it's early logging days and when it was moved back to Vancouver. Photographs were maintained and collected by William F. Surgenor and later by his grandson Bill Robinson.

History: William F. Surgenor was born in Ireland in 1877 and in 1905 William Surgenor immigrated to British Columbia. In 1912, William Surgenor married Bessie Duncan in Vancouver. William worked as a railway locomotive engineer and was toted in the Vancouver Sun as a legend among railroaders in British Columbia. His first railway job as train engineer in British Columbia was aboard the locomotive named "Old Curly". William Surgenor worked on the engine during it's logging service up Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast and before it was moved back to Vancouver around 1927. William and Bessie Surgenor had four children; William George "Tyke", Earl Almer, Alice Margrete (Robinson) and Robert. William and Bessie Surgenor's eldest son William "Tyke" Surgenor also worked on the railway as a fireman and brakeman. William William F. Surgenor died in 1965. The locomotive engine "Old Curly" was built in San Francisco in 1879 and was used during the building of the harbour sea wall. It was likley built by Marshutz & Cantrell. It was acquired by Andrew Onderdonk in 1881 to use during construction of the Fraser Canyon section of the Canadian Pacific Railroad (CPR). The locomotive was the first logging locomotive in this area. It was later used on the section from Savona Ferry to Kamloops. The locomotive was layed up in 1887 and not used for several years until it was purchased by the British Columbia Timber and Trading Company (BCTTC) for use on their logging railway in Surrey. In the early 1900s the engine was shifted from Surrey to the company operations north of Powell River and was a familiar sight carrying logs from Hastings Mill. It was brought back to Vancouver, in a damaged condition and stored on BCTTC property around 1927, was acquired by the CPR and restored as a 50th Anniversary Project in 1930. It was displayed at the Pacific National Exhibition grounds until the 1973 when it was brought to Heritage Village (later Burnaby Village Museum) and restored again.

Charles first came to Vancouver and joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) but within a week he was sent to Regina. This is where he met May. May and Charles got married in 1926 and Charles began working as an accountant for the Saskatchewan Wheat Growers, then for the Canadian Wool Growers before being laid off. In October of 1930, Charles and May left Regina for Vancouver Island. Charles drove himself out and May rode the train with her children; twin boys and a daughter, only one year apart. They settled at May’s parent’s second house in Coombs. The Purdons arrived in Burnaby in December of 1932 and rented a house on Edmonds Street. Charles was unable to do road work and instead found work through the Liberal Party and also with the Municipal engineers indoors on a number of projects. In 1938 the Purdons were able to get into a reverted house built by Ernie Winch at Maple Avenue (then Jubilee) and Nelson Avenue that had nine bedrooms. They paid ten dollars a month to the municipality for use of this property. May Eliza Purdon died April 6, 1983 at the age of seventy-six.

Scope and Content: Recording is of an interview with Reidun Seim conducted by Kathy Bossort. Reidun Seim was one of 23 participants interviewed as part of the Community Heritage Commission’s Burnaby Mountain Oral History Project. The interview is mainly about Reidun Seim’s memories about her parent’s farm on Curtis Street, events in her childhood, and the people who lived in or visited her neighborhood. She takes us on a tour of her neighborhood in the 1940s, telling us stories about families who lived on Curtis Street on and east of 7300 block, including people who lived on Burnaby Mountain in the old Hastings Grove subdivision above the end of municipal water service at Philips Avenue. She describes changes to Curtis Street, particularly after it provided access to Simon Fraser University in 1965. She also talks about her teaching career, and about how she values the green space and conservation area on Burnaby Mountain.

Biographical Notes: Reidun Seim was born in 1931 in Vancouver B.C. to Sjur and Martine Seim. Sjur and Martine Seim emigrated to Canada from Norway in 1930, and after settling in Vancouver, moved to an acre of land and a new home at the base of Burnaby Mountain in 1932. Sjur attended UBC to learn about poultry farming and began his own chicken and egg business in 1935. The farm animals and large garden also contributed to the family’s livelihood and self-sufficiency. The Curtis Street neighborhood was a lively place and extended well up Curtis Street on the west slope of Burnaby Mountain, where Reidun would babysit for families. Reidun attended Sperling Avenue Elementary School (Gr. 1-8), Burnaby North High School, and Vancouver Normal School for teacher training in 1950-1951. She began teaching primary grades in Port Coquitlam at James Park School. Most of her career was spent in North Delta, teaching at Kennedy and Annieville schools from 1954-1958, appointed Primary Consultant (1958-1960) and Primary Supervisor (1960-1985), before retiring in 1986. Reidun lived at home with her parents on Curtis Street, commuting to Delta, and continues to live in the original farmhouse.

Biographical Notes: Catherine Bertha “Cathy” Rees was born in Greenwood, British Columbia on March 30, 1903. Her mother died when she was four years old and her younger brother Lloyd was only a few months old. Catherine’s family moved regularly because her dad was continually transferred. She attended a two room school in Greenwood until grade four, then to school in Kamloops until grade 8, graduating from Duke of Connaught High School in New Westminster in 1919. One of her brothers won a lacrosse championship while at Nelson Avenue School. Catherine started at the University of British Columbia in 1919 and went to Normal School in 1923 (she belonged to the first teacher-training class). Upon graduating, Catherine was offered a position at Revelstoke High School for Physics, French and Latin which she took for a brief period of time. She then taught for one year in Victoria, traveling from one school to the other in a one ton truck to teach languages. For the next two years, she worked at Cloverdale High School. By 1929 Catherine began working in Burnaby where her father and two brothers were living. She taught at Burnaby South for her entire career in Burnaby, from 1929 to 1964. Catherine taught French and Latin as well as physical education to the girls (in the basement with two other teachers) and lived at the corner of Nelson and Victory (she still lives there at the time of this interview).

Between them, the Hill brothers owned all the land between Burnaby Lake and Deer Lake where Deer Creek runs, and half way around Deer Lake. Bernard built his family home at Douglas Road near Deer Lake in 1892. After the decline in the strawberry industry, Bernard worked as a surveyor for the municipality. He also served as Burnaby Councillor and School Trustee. Gerry attended Miss Harriet Woodward’s kindergarten class, and went on to Edmonds School with Miss Ellen Lister as his teacher. He later went to Central high school in New Westminster, often on horseback. Gerry served in World War I, signing his recruitment papers November 9, 1914. When he returned home, he worked felling trees, then as an apprentice surveyor and finally as a carpenter. Minard Gerald “Gerry” Hill married Charlotte Elizabeth “Elizabeth” Vidal on September 28, 1920 and single-handedly built a house for him and his wife about a thousand feet from his parents’ home. He also bought property at Yellow Point, Vancouver Island around this time. By the early 1930s Gerry had moved to Yellow Point permanently and begun work building the lodge. Elizabeth and Gerry’s child, Richard Grant McEwan Hill was born at Ladysmith hospital. Charlotte Elizabeth “Elizabeth” (Vidal) Hill died February 11, 1984 at the age of eighty-seven. Minard Gerald “Gerry” Hill died January 30, 1988 at the age of ninety-three.
