History
Margaret “Margie” Norton (nee Knight) (1912-2010) is a daughter of Ernest Richard Knight (born 1877 in Burstow, Surrey, England) and Louise Augusta Knight (nee Ellis) (born in 1882 in South Horsham, England). Ernest Knight and Louise Ellis married in Vancouver in May 1908 at Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver. Ernest and Louise had five children; Naida (Hansen), Margaret (Norton), Frederick "Fred", Lila (McKinley) and Dolly (Walker-Kirkwood). Margaret and Frederick were twins. Sometime in the 1920s, Ernest Knight left his wife and family and moved to Australia. After Ernest left, Louise Knight lived common law with her partner Charles Roberts. Louise and Charles had one son, Charles Thomas "Bob" Roberts. The Knight-Roberts family home was located at 931 Gilmore Avenue in Burnaby. The house was relocated to this address from the forty hundred block of Georgia Street sometime in the mid 1920s. Louise Knight-Roberts (nee Ellis) lived at 931 Gilmore Avenue in Burnaby until her death in 1950. Charles Roberts died in 1956. Margaret and her siblings attended Gilmore Avenue School until Kitchener School was completed. She was the first May Queen at Kitchener School. Margaret Knight and her twin brother Fred were among the first graduating class of Kitchener School in 1925. Margaret married John Leonard “Jack” Norton in 1947 at Vancouver Heights United Church. Margaret worked at a factory making bags for Bonar and Bemis until she married Jack. Jack worked as a stationery engineer for Nelson's Laundry. Margaret and Jack lived at the former Knight-Roberts home at 931 Gilmore Avenue. Margaret and Jack had two children, Darlene and Rey. Margaret Knight was a lifetime Burnaby resident residing at 931 Gilmore Avenue until her death at 98 yrs in 2010. Her husband Jack died in 1990.

Scope and Content
Photograph of a class sitting at their desks. The desks are attached to the backs of the chairs. The name of the class and school is unknown. An earlier catalogue record conjectures it is probably a Burnaby school, possibly Gilmore Avenue School. The inscription in pencil of the date 1920 is of unknown origin, but the clothing styles of the students indicate this date is probably close to being correct. There are 10 girls and 22 boys in the class, unsegregated in seating arrangement. The boys are wearing dark turtle neck sweaters, some with a dark sports jacket over the sweater. The boys' hair is moppish, some parted, most not. The girls are wearing dresses (little detail visible) and long hair, some with a ribbon on top and pulled back. A black board on the right side of the students has a large map of South America drawn on it. A Red Cross Nurse's picture is above this board. The alphabet is written in large block capitals in chalk across the top of the rear blackboard. Queen Mary's picture is above this board. A female teacher is standing beneath Queen Mary. The dangling lights have conical shades. Inscribed on the negative, lower left of the print: "267." Annotations in pencil read, "1920" (front of photo, upper right) and "Mr. Tom Browning" (back of photo).

History
Valley Bakery was started in Burnaby in 1957 by Gerardus "George" Jacobus Kuyer. George started as an apprentice baker in Holland at age 13 and came from the Netherlands to Canada in 1954. He originally opened Valley Bakery at 4059 Hastings Street, near Gilmore Avenue. The bakery later moved to four other premises over the years, before opening at the present location at 4058 East Hastings Street. Valley Bakery brought European baking to the Burnaby area. Son Jack Kuyer bought the bakery from his father in 1979. Jack was an early adopter of using computers to track inventory in the bakery. As a strong community advocate, Jack was one of a few business owners that worked to halt a Department of Highways plan to rid Hastings Street of all street level parking. He was also integral in launching Hats Off Day, a festival designed for local merchants to show their appreciation for their customers. As of 2019, Hats Off Day is Burnaby's largest street festival. In 2015, the Burnaby Board of Trade inducted Valley Bakery into the Burnaby Business Excellence Awards Hall of Fame. The bakery has been in business for over 60 years as of 2019.
