- History
- The Community Heritage Commission was established in 1988 by Burnaby City Council under the provisions of the B.C. Heritage Conservation Act. The role of the Commission has been to advise Council on various heritage matters referred to it by Council. The Commission has evolved to oversee programs and projects that support heritage conservation in Burnaby as guided by the Official Community Plan. One of the goals of the plan is to provide opportunities for increased awareness and the conservation of the City's unique natural, cultural, archaeological and built heritage. In 2017, the Community Heritage Commission received funding from Burnaby City Council and the BC/Canada 150 project to launch a Heritage Interpretive Plaque Program to celebrate and mark Burnaby's 125 anniversary. The project was launched by the Planning and Building Department in partnership with the Burnaby Village Museum which included the development of online video vignettes to accompany the markers in a new expanded interpretive program.

- History
- Burnaby Village Museum is an open air museum that represents a typical tram-stop community. Museum interpreters welcome visitors, provide demonstrations and on site programming. The museum’s collection consists of thousands of artifacts, community records as well as several original Burnaby heritage buildings, a 1912 carousel, 1912 B.C. Electric Railway interurban tram, a Chinese Market Garden and Indigenous Learning House and Matriarch's Garden. In 1990, the Corporation of the District of Burnaby assumed the operation and management of Burnaby Village Museum from the Burnaby Village Museum Association. Burnaby Village Museum (formerly named Heritage Village) was originally created by the Burnaby Centennial '71 Committee in 1971 as a commemorative project for British Columbia's Centennial. A concept for an open-air museum was developed near Deer Lake on Districts Lots 79/ 85. The official sod turning for Heritage Village took place on the site on April 11, 1971. In the spring of 1971, a museum director and curator were hired to oversee the development of the project and the acquisition of artifacts with funding from the Parks and Recreation Commission. The Century Park Museum Association (later named Burnaby Village Museum Association) was formed on October 26, 1971 as a governing body for Heritage Village Museum. The museum opened on November 19, 1971 with Mayor Bob Pritte and Canada's Governor General Roland Michener. IN July 1972, the museum opened for it's first public season. The Village was described as depictive of the 1890 to 1920 era of the lower mainland. Since 1990, the site expanded from it’s original four acre size to it's current ten acres. In the 1990s and early 2000s staff and volunteers created exhibits and programs about Burnaby with an emphasis on the 1920s. Since it's 40th anniversary in 2011, the museum has implemented changes to make the museum more interactive and inclusive in telling the story of Burnaby's history.

- The field hockey stick is made of ash. It has a fairly flat curve on the blade. It is round at the handle and gradually flattens and curves towards the blade of the stick. The blade is flat on one side and rounded at the back. The handle is leather wrapped for 27 cm. and then it is string wrapped for 31 cm. Overall length is 90 cm. The end of the handle is 4 cm diameter "JAQUES LONDON / MAKERS", printed on back of blade "BEST ENGLISH ASH" printed on back of blade "M Thomson" written in ink on back of blade. "20 oz" stamped in back edge of blade just below string wrapping. - Salvation Army Guide uniform dress belonging to Virginia Blake, early 1960s. From the 6th Vancouver Salvation Army Guides on Hastings Street. Salvation Army was affiliated with Girl Guides (1937) of Canada until 1998. Worn with brown leather belt, beret, folded triangular company tie. The three white stripes on the right breast pocket indicate that wearer was a company leader. The more stripes you had, the higher your rank. A single white stripe, sewn down the center of the pocket, would have indicated that she was a patrol seconder. Two stripes would indicate that she was a patrol leader. White adhesive tape was used so that the guider didn’t have to unstitch and re-sew the stripes as they gained rank.

- Burnaby's Centennial Project was conceived to re-create a permanent memorial to "founders of our west coast society", how they lived, how they worked, played and created the basic pattern of our present city. The project was patterned after "Barkerville" and "Upper Canada Village". The Municipality of Burnaby assembled components of a park on a five acre site located on the east side of Century Gardens and just north of Deer Lake. The site was named "Heritage Village" which would be compirised of an 1890s townsite with a Main Street bordered by workshops, businesses and offices and a village square with a bandstand, a maple tree and boardwalks. The commemorative project was initiated by The Burnaby Centennial '71 Committee in close co-operation with the Burnaby Historical Society, Burnaby Parks and Recreation Commission and Project Consultants: Hopping, Kovach, Grinnell, Design Consultants Ltd.; General Contractor : Ballarin Bros. Ltd; Finish Contractor: Franco Pozzollo - Trevi Construction; Architects: Donald Erb and Associates; Landscape: Burnaby Parks & Recreation; Mechanical: Slinn S.P. and Co. Ltd. and Electrical: Arnold Nemetz Engineering. Student Labour from Douglas College and Simon Fraser University provided by "Operation Ahoy" (in conjunction with the Opportunities for Youth programme). The first installation of "Heritage Village" was funded by a combination of Federal, Provincial and Municipal grants with work beginning on April 10, 1971. The Century Park Museum Association held it's founding meeting on October 26, 1971 in the Council Chambers of the Burnaby Municipal Hall. The Association was founded under the auspices of the Burnaby Centennial '71 Committee, to adminster Burnaby's Centennial '71 Commemorative project, "Heritage Village" located at Canada Way and Deer Lake Avenue. The first phase of the Heritage Village (Park) was officially opened on November 19, 1971. The project included the following buildings; a blacksmith shop, buggy and bicycle shop, general store, land registry office, schoolhouse, print shop, apothecary shop, Barber - dentist, Chinese shop window display, ice cream parlour, Interurban tram and station, restored country home (E.W. Bateman house).

- The Memorial fountain is made of British Columbia granite. The fountain is currently three courses of rough stone, leading up to the smooth water bowl. Two side pillars carry the memorial stone and the peaked cap stone at the top. The memorial stone's face is smooth, to present the cut text of the memorial. There is a maple leaf cut into the face of the cap stone. The text and the maple leaf are highlighted with black paint. There is a small block at the rear of the fountain to allow children easy access and there is a smooth stone drinking bowl for animals at the proper right of the base of the fountain. The fountain on its original site was four courses high. In its current site the bottom course is set level with the ground. The main bowl is supplied with running water but the animal bowl is dry.

- The fountain was erected by the Burnaby Civic Employees Union (now CUPE Local 23) and is dedicated to Union members who died in the Great War. Local stonemason, William Williamson, constructed the fountain in 1923 and it was unveiled on June 17, 1923. In 1977, the fountain was moved and rededicated from the old Burnaby Municipal Hall site to its current site at Burnaby Village Museum. On November 23, 1992, the fountain was given official Heritage Designation by Bylaw # 9807, Municipality of Burnaby
- Marks/Labels
- "IN MEMEORY / OF OUR FELLOW WORKERS WHO FELL IN THE WAR / 1914 - 1918 / ERECTED BY / THE CIVIC EMPLOYEES UNION - BURNABY - 1923", cut into the smoothed face of the memorial stone on the fountain. There is a maple leaf cut into the face of the cap stone on the top of the fountain. The maple leaf motif is also used on veteran grave stones.

- The Dead Horse Corner Gazette - Newsletter -- [1916]. The Official Journal of the First Canadian Infantry Brigade called "The Dead Horse Corner Gazette". The journal markets itself as "A Trench Journal of Breezy Comment...". This edition of the journal is Number 3, for June 1916. The journal was published with permission from the General Officer Commanding First Infantry Brigade, B.E.F., on Active Service. There are 12 pages and the journal was priced at one Franc. The journal was printed by John Heywood Limited by Trade Union Labour in Manchester and London. The journal measures 22cm x 27.5cm.

- This footage was originally shot in 16 mm, on Sunday, April 11, 1971, and broadcast on CBC television. The original footage was silent: when it was broadcast, a news announcer read from a script to describe the events. In 2011, the footage was digitized. The booklet provides information about shipping facilities, distance saved, cost saving of the canal, tolls, traffic routes, and the Navy's use of the canal. The cover of the booklet is light green with a photograph of a ship passing through the calan. The title of the booklet is printed in red. The cover has been stamped by The Panama Canal Exhibit in San Francisco.

- Burnaby Municipal Hall - Pamphlet -- [1956]. Pamphlet for the Official Opening of the Burnaby Municipal Hall on June 22nd, 1956 at 2pm. The front cover of the pamphlet has a black and white photograph of the new municipal hall building. The pamphlet includes a brief history of the municipal halls in Burnaby, a program of events for the day, photographs of various spaces in the new hall and a floor plan. On the back cover is the District of Burnaby seal logo with the cornucopia. The pamphlet was printed by Printcarft of B.C. Limited and Allied Printing in New Westminster.

- Plaque. Badge shaped, made of ply-wooden, the background is painted yellow/tan and the lettering is black.
- Object History
- The plaque commemorates the history of the British Columbia Electric Railway in Burnaby, and the preservation of tram #1223 by the Burnaby Historical Society in 1958. Interurban tram No. 1223 has been restored by the joint efforts of the Friends of 1223 and Burnaby Village Museum. In March 2007 the tram was officially returned to Burnaby Village Museum and is currently on display, in a replica of a Tram Car Barn, at the Museum.

- "This Interurban Tram Car was built in 1913 by the St. Louis Car Co. for the British Columbia Electric Railway Co. and operated over that company's three lines in Burnaby until abandonment, November 1956. Throughout the nearly fifty years of its existence this tram and seventy similar cars carried many thousands of settlers and commuters and helped to build Burnaby into a thriving community of over 80,000"; "Dedicated and placed here by Burnaby Historical Society.
