It is the root and rhizoma of Sophora tonkinensis Gapnep. It has a bean-like smell and extremely bitter taste. It is bitter, cold, and toxic, and enters the lung and stomach meridians. The root of the perennial herbaceous plant Panax quinquefolium L. of the family Araliaceae. Mainly produced in U. S. A. and Canada.
