Scope and Content: Christmas card to the Adolf family featuring a photograph of the Mawhinney family home at 908 Burris Avenue (later 6011 Buckingham). The home is pictured at the end of a long driveway. House number "908" is nailed to a tree. Large evergreens line one side of the driveway. There are lot of leaves on the ground but still some leaves on the trees.

History: Local farmers William Alexander Mawhinney (1870-1953) and Annie Josephine Mawhinney (née Sutcliff, 1871-1956) built this residence as their retirement home. It was the last of several houses built in the immediate vicinity by members of the Mawhinney family between 1909 and 1930. Born in Ireland, William Mawhinney first came to Burnaby to help his brother Isaiah establish his fruit farm. Due to his farm management experience, in 1908 William became foreman of the Avalon estate at Deer Lake that was owned by F.J. Hart. When he retired in 1930, William had fifty years of experience as a fruit and grain farmer.This house is situated on its lot at an angle, rather than parallel to the street, to take advantage of the view of wooded Buckingham Creek that runs through the northeast section of the property.

An earlier catalogue record conjectures it is probably a Burnaby school, possibly Gilmore Avenue School. The inscription in pencil of the date 1920 is of unknown origin, but the clothing styles of the students indicate this date is probably close to being correct. There are 10 girls and 22 boys in the class, unsegregated in seating arrangement. The boys are wearing dark turtle neck sweaters, some with a dark sports jacket over the sweater. The boys' hair is moppish, some parted, most not. The girls are wearing dresses (little detail visible) and long hair, some with a ribbon on top and pulled back. A black board on the right side of the students has a large map of South America drawn on it. A Red Cross Nurse's picture is above this board. The alphabet is written in large block capitals in chalk across the top of the rear blackboard. Queen Mary's picture is above this board. A female teacher is standing beneath Queen Mary. The dangling lights have conical shades. Inscribed on the negative, lower left of the print: "267." History: George Vincent Martin was born in 1892 in England. He married Matilda Florence Reed in 1916. He purchased a property in North Burnaby in the 1920s on Trinity Street. There was a main house and a "shack" on the property split up onto two lots.

There is a freight wagon loaded with lumber, pulled by two horses on Douglas Road. An annotation on the back of the photo reads, "March 19th 1929 / The first load of lumber taken for the construction of St St [sic] Therese [sic] Church on the Grandview Highway / Burnaby BC."

Scope and Content: Photograph of four of five cottages inside the New Haven Correctional Centre. The cottages were numbered one through five and were built in 1939.

History: In 1937 New Haven Correctional Centre was established as the British Columbia Training School on the southeast side of Marine Drive in Burnaby (4250 Marine Drive). Sections of Sussex and Patterson Avenues bordered the estate. Originally, the facility housed nineteen inmates with two staff and was one of the first initiatives in Canada to segregate young adult inmates into a separate institution apart from adults. This was part of the Borstal system that started in England whereby young male offenders between the ages of sixteen and twenty one were trained to earn an honest living. Alterations and additions to the estate took place between December 1937 and October 1939 so that more inmates could be accomodated. Five new cottages were built that could hold up to forty people. Except for the plastering and lighting, all work on the new cottages was done by the inmates. On October 29, 1939, the Lieutenant-Governor Eric Hamber formally opened the New Haven Borstal School. World War II interrupted full development of the intstitution and it was closed in 1941 when the inmates were were conscripted into the army. Between 1941 and 1947 the Deaf and Blind Institute were housed at New Haven. In 1947, the New Haven Borstal School returned to the estate. New additions were added to old buildings and new additional buildings were erected on the site over the years including a warden's house on the east grounds and a barn and gymnasium. In the 1970s an equipment shed was added along with another dormitory and a variety of small sheds and storage buildings. The correctional centre officially closed in March 2001.
