Scope and Content: Recording is a taped interview with Alfred Bingham by SFU graduate student Bettina Bradbury June 10, 1975. Major themes discussed are: the Depression, Pioneers, and the Co-operative Movement. To view "Narrow By" terms for each track expand this description and see "Notes".

Biographical Notes: Alfred "Alf" Bingham was born in England in 1892 and moved to Canada in 1912. His first job in Canada was laying track for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (GTPR) from Edmonton to McBride in 1912. His second was in Vancouver at the Rat Portage Mill on False Creek, working on the Resaw machine. He quit after one week due to poor working conditions. After taking part in the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike as a delegate of the Retail and Mailorder Union (A.F.L.) on the Winnipeg Trades and Labour Council, Alfred moved to Burnaby where he and fellow Burnaby residents Angus McLean and Percy Little worked ten hour days to build a Shingle Mill on the edge of Burnaby Lake for Simpson & Giberson. George Green, carpenter and millwright (author of “The History of Burnaby”) also helped in the construction of the mill. Alfred built his own home from lumber cut from the mill in the Lochdale area on Sherlock Street between Curtis Street and Kitchener Street. On April 10, 1920 Alfred married Mary Jane “Ada” Reynolds. Alfred and Ada often took in foster children during their marriage. Due to her nursing experience, Ada was often called upon to deliver babies in the Burnaby area. Alfred and Ada Bingham were instrumental members of the Army of the Common Good, collecting vegetables and grains from growers in the area and even producing over 125 tons of vegetables from its own gardens to feed children and youth suffering from the lack of resources during the Depression years. The army was in operation for ten years and during that time the members organised the Credit Union movement of British Columbia and drew up the Credit Union act thorough the Vancouver Co-operative Council. They also started Co-Op stores and the Co-Op Wholesale Society. Alfred was also Secretary of the Burnaby Housing committee and in 1946 he became the Secretary of the North Burnaby Labour Progressive Party (LPP). Mary Jane “Ada” (Reynolds) Bingham died on August 9, 1969. Her husband Alfred died on April 29, 1979.

Scope and Content: Photograph of a group of people in front of Maude and Harriet Woodward's cottage. This house was a prefabricated cottage erected in 1904. The cottages were designed by J.J. Mahoney and architect Joseph Bowman and were manufactured in Vancouver by the B.C. Mills Timber and Trading Company. Maude Woodward established a post-office here which was operated by her sister, Harriet. Harriet also began a small private school here, the first in Burnaby Lake. The cottage was enlarged with several additions until 1912 when the Woodwards built a new house. Scope and Content: Composite photograph of the employees of the Westminster Branch of the British Columbia Electric Railway Company. A name has been written in pen under many of the photographs: starting at the top left; Neelands, McNel, Wilson, Stuart, Blair, unidentified, Healy, Innes, Rawlison. One row down, five together to the left are; Marsh, Grimmison, Huston, Gregory, Stewart. Four in the center are; Shiles, unidentified, Whitmore, McQuarrie. Five together to the right are; Dickinson, Routley, Thorburn, Monterth, unidentified. Second row down, five together on the left are; Butterfield, Rainey, Alcock, WIlliams, Feeney. Three together in the center are; Glover, Buntzen, Sperling. Four together on the right are; Dunlop and three unidentified.Three rows down, four together on the left are; Reid, Grimmer, McArthur, Brown. Center is unidentified except for Wilson, who is three from the right. Four together on the right are; unidentified, Harris, Ellis, unidentified. Four rows down, three together on the left are; Miller, Featherstone, Williams. The rest of the center are unidentified, and the last three on the right are; McAurthur, Holland, and Hudson. Also included in the composite are two photographs of electric railroad cars, one of the New Westminster shoreline and one of a train station.

Scope and Content: Photograph of a large gathering of people who are in costumes varying from a clown to a swedish maid to a beggar to a drunk. Scope and Content: Photograph of two women in bathing suits, standing in a large body of water at a point where the water is up to their knees. Their bathing suits appear like sailor shirts with skirts and stockings, with caps over their heads. The inscription identifies the girl on the left as Jean Dyson, and the girl on the right is identified as Gloriana Bird (or Birdie). They are at a beach in Winnipeg. The inscription dates the photograph circa 1906 or 1907. However, other prints of the same image are dated circa 1905. Annotations on the back of the postcard read: "Taken 1906 or 1907 [erased and corrected dates. Previously written 1905 or 1906]" and "Jean & Birdie / in Lake Wpeg."

Scope and Content: Photograph of five women dressed in wet bathing suits. They have their arms over each others' shoulders and have a leg raised as in a chorus line. An older lady, in a long dark skirt and light coloured waist with leg-o-mutton sleeves holding a dark coloured parasol is standing on the right side of the photograph. According to a 1974 catalogue record, the small girl who is on the left side of the chorus line with her leg raised is Catherine Rees. The girl is wearing a ribbon in her hair, and dress-like bathing suit, and has bare feet. The women are all wearing dark coloured stockings and have on what look like loose-fitting dresses which fasten down the front and come to just below the knee. Four of them are wearing bandanas on their heads. The Sears, Roebuck 1908 catalogue p. 1112 shows bathing suits and bathing or dust caps similar to those worn by the women in the photograph. The location of the photograph is unidentified.
