In 1912, he built the Deerholme house designed by his architect son, Fred Laughton Townley.

A man beside him is holding up a broom and pretending to play the guitar with it. The man standing on the right side of the photograph is holding a shovel with one hand. An annotation on the back of the photograph reads: "Ed Johnson / Toronto" suggesting the location is Toronto and perhaps one of the men depicted is named Ed Johnson.
