- This school was the fifth to open in Burnaby and was initially known as Lake View School. In 1913, names of Burnaby Schools were changed to reflect their location and thus Lake View became Douglas Road. The first building on the site was torn down in the 1950s but the main building, which was constructed in 1928, remains although it had additions and renovations done in 1950, 1954, 1960, 1961, 1967 and 1973.

- During the height of the real estate boom between 1909 and 1913, Vancouver developer Frederick Munson plotted the subdivision of more than 150 acres of land on Curtis Street east of Sperling Avenue, on the newly logged slopes of remote Burnaby Mountain. Burnaby opened up Curtis Street to facilitate access to Hastings Grove and Munson agreed to pay one-third of the cost but never did. He also paid only $1000.00 down on the agreed price of the land. When he failed to make further payments, the mortgage holders foreclosed and re-sold the properties. People who had bought lots from Munson lost not only the land they though they owned, but also the money they had paid for it. Hastings Grove was a disaster. The converted automobile - which served as the bus - stopped running. The few houses and most of the lots reverted to the Municipality because of non-payment of taxes and are now part of Burnaby Mountain Park. The only remaining building is the old Hastings Grove Store which still stands as an apartment building.

- The original resident of this house was John Houston, listed in the 1909 City Directory as a ‘rancher’, but is known as the long-time home of barrister Wrathman Sheridan Turner (1889-1974) and his wife Gertrude Helena (née Whealhouse) Turner. Stucco now covers the original exterior siding, though the house maintains its wide, overhanging eaves with exposed rafter tails and triangular eave brackets, indicative of the influence of the newly-emerging Arts and Crafts style.

- After considering several sites in the Greater Vancouver area, the Shell Oil Company chose 70 acres in North Burnaby with frontage of one third of a mile on Burrard Inlet. Shell proposed to build a four-million dollar plant that would employ up to 2000 - providing some relief in the middle of Burnaby's economic crisis of the Depression years. The site became known as the Shellburn Refinery and was in operation until 1993.

- The Sandersons were pioneer settlers in the Central Park area, arriving in Burnaby in 1904. Thomas Sanderson (1878-1936) was born in Morningside, Scotland and immigrated to British Columbia in 1899. In Vancouver in 1903, he married Ellen Jane Garvin (1883-1965), a native of Sherbrooke, Quebec. Thomas was chief of the Accounting Department at Hastings Mill, and served as Reeve of Burnaby in 1919 and 1920. One of his sons, Thomas, was a long-time teacher in Burnaby. The Sandersons’ house was built in 1905 as a small Edwardian bungalow but was extensively remodelled in the 1920s and is a fine example of the Craftsman style and today remains in good condition. Typical of the Late Craftsman style, the house has a front gabled roof, triangular eave brackets, tapered window surrounds and a mix of textural finishes, including shingles and lapped siding.

- Built circa 1909 for Central Park farmer Joseph Clarke (1851-1936) and his wife, Ellen (1864-1938), this Edwardian-era farm house is valued for its vernacular design, which demonstrates the utilitarian nature of working-class housing during the boom years prior to the First World War. The Joseph Clarke House is additionally valued for its link with the development of the Central Park neighbourhood during the Edwardian era. The advent of the Central Park interurban rail line in 1892, operated by the B.C. Electric Company, connected the area to Vancouver and led to its suburban development. This is one of the oldest surviving houses in the Central Park neighbourhood. It was designated as a municipal heritage site in 2005 and rehabilitated as part of the adjacent multi-family townhouse and apartment redevelopment.

- In 1950, the Burnaby School Inspector reported: "the recent development of a number of large housing projects and the continuing growth of new homes in settled areas are compelling the Board to consider a building program of major proportions...now under construction, including McPherson Park with 21 classrooms." Enrolment in its first year was 686 students. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, junior high schools were replaced with expanded secondary schools encompassing grades 7 through 12; as a result, McPherson Park Junior High was closed and Burnaby South Secondary School opened.

North Pacific Lumber Company Ruins

- Located on the shore of Burrard Inlet, these poured concrete piers of the smokestack burner and the former boiler and plant of the North Pacific Lumber Company are among the only remains of the once-thriving industrial site located on the waterfront on the south shore of Burrard Inlet. The sawmill and the Village of Barnet were initiated by David MacLaren, a wealthy lumberman from Buckingham, Quebec, who had previously established the Fraser Mills in Coquitlam in 1889. McLaren gambled that a sawmill on the main line of the C.P.R near Vancouver would serve the Canadian domestic market and be a profitable venture. The North Pacific Lumber Company established itself on this peninsula on Burrard Inlet and was fully operational in 1900. In 1909, the mill was completely burned out by a fire starting in the boiler room. Immediately the plant was rebuilt, modern in every respect and absolutely fireproof, as the entire power plant and boiler room was built of reinforced concrete and steel, of which these ruins are the last remains. The plant closed during the First World War and reopened as the Barnet Lumber Company in 1925 only to close forever in 1931 after a strike during the Great Depression.

- Burnaby's fourth school was originally called Dundonald school and was opened in 1905. The building cost $600.00 to erect and was built on a small clearing of land in the middle of what was described as a dense forest. The attendance in the first year consisted of 13 children from three families: the Byrne, Woolard and Thrussell families. The school was later renamed Riverway East School and was replaced in 1953 by Glenwood Elementary School.

The area lying to the south of Byrne Creek Ravine Park was used as a municipal garbage dump until the 1960s and as a landfill site for yard waste disposal until the early 1990s at which point the area was incorporated into the Edmonds Town Centre Plan and the land was made into park and open space.

- The Windsor Neighbourhood comprises a number of different districts with different characteristics. To the north, stretching to the border of the Deer Lake Park, is the primarily residential area that was developed after the building boom of the 1950s and now consists of a mix of single-family and multi-family housing. To the south, from Kingsway to the Skytrain line, an industrial area was maintained along with a significant commercial corridor along Kingsway. In recent years, the growth and development of this area has been guided by the Royal Oak Community Plan adopted by Council in 1999.

- The W.J. Walker House is a rustic cottage at the eastern end of Deer Lake and is now located within Deer Lake Park. It is a one-and-a-half-storey wood-frame shingle-clad vernacular structure.
- Heritage Value
- The W.J. Walker House is important as it references the economic activities in the Deer Lake area prior to the development of grand mansions in Deer Lake Park. It is typical of the cottages built by workers in the market gardening and lumber-milling industries that operated around the lake primarily from 1904-1925. This is the only cottage on the shores of Deer Lake remaining from the era when these industries were the focus of the area's development. The house demonstrates the aesthetic values of Olive Walker and her husband William J. Walker, a ‘rancher’ (market gardener, poultry farmer) who built the house as a retirement home, in the quality of its construction and interior finishing. The Craftsman styling of the house was a popular design vocabulary of the time and reflected the modern taste and values of the owner. The construction of the house also illustrates the use of locally milled lumber. The extant cold safe at the side of house is indicative of food storage methods in the early twentieth century and provides insight to the everyday domestic lives of people at this time.
