- After a lull in construction during the World War I period, East Burnaby Neighbourhood's growth resumed during the 1920s when many homes and businesses were constructed. The post-World War Two period also saw rapid construction and the creation of new housing developments in response to a population boom. - 00:00-2:58: Ella describes the area around Kingsway and Edmonds as she remembers it from her childhood. She names the businesses on the four corners of the intersection, which included a small house which was turned into a business. 2:58-7:18: Ella mentions some of the organized activities of the time, and discusses household responsibilities of girls. Ella describes jobs she had as a teenager, such as a brief time working at the B.C. Electric Café at Carrall St. She talks about her allowance, and describes how she spent the money as well as her earnings from her jobs. XXX 7:18–13:55: Although Ella doesn’t recall being involved in many organized activities, she does mention Sunday school and a girl’s group. She talks about having A.R.P. and First Aid training during the Second World War. Ella notes that children made their own fun, and discusses the games she played, parks she went to, and how she got there. She describes how parents kept an eye on children without strictly supervising them. Ella also talks about neighborhood and school friends, describes her recreation, which was mainly informal, and where she played. XXX 13:55–15:30: Ella can’t choose any one memory of her childhood as being the most joyful, but she recalls the announcement of the declaration of war (of World War II) as her worst childhood memory. XXX 15:30–16:31: Ella describes the families in the neighborhood and her schoolmates as having similar cultural backgrounds. The very few immigrant families she remembers came from Europe. XXX 16:31–18:13: Ella describes her household living arrangements and her toys. XXX 18:13–20:25: Ella comments on the changes which have occurred in Burnaby since her childhood as the city has become built up. She notes that much of it began after the war as veterans returned home. XXX 20:25-21:41: Ella explains why she is still a Burnaby resident and remarks on the self-reliance that children acquired in the earlier days of the city.

- Brothers Herbert, Walter, James and G. Emerson Gilley began operating the Gilley Brothers Logging Company in 1887 and in 1903 took over the logging business of L. T. Dundas, setting up camp on Burnaby Mountain. Gilley logged over 2.5 million board feet of timber and cut 20,000 cords of shingle bolts here. The Gilley Brothers also logged areas of South Burnaby.

- The Kelly Douglas Company was founded in 1896 as a wholesale grocery business. It enjoyed rapid success during the Klondike Goldrush of 1898 when it became a primary supplier for prospectors. In 1946, its headquarters moved from Vancouver to Burnaby and a manufacturing plant and warehouse was built on the site.

- In the 1931 "Burnaby Year Book" the Lochdale neighbourhood is described as follows: "Lochdale…is situated at the intersection of the Hastings-Barnet road at the point where Sperling Avenue crosses…Situated at the intersection…there are an up to date service station and a general store, at which the Lochdale Post Office is situated. Immediately north of this is the seventy acres on which the Shell Oil Co. are to build an up-to-date refinery...On going south on Sperling Avenue can be found some lovely homes of the residents, all of which possess the most beautiful flower gardens, some of which are hobbies, and some being in the nature of a business. Others are engaged in chicken farming...while others find employment at the Barnet Mill about two miles east on the Hastings-Barnet Road."

It is located within the Deer Lake Park Heritage Precinct, and is adjacent to a related house, the Rosalie (Moore) Barrett Residence, built the following year.
- Heritage Value
- The Moore House is significant for its relationship to first owner, Ethel Hutchings Moore (1884-1948), who purchased the property from Maud and Harriet Woodward, two of Deer Lake's first residents. Moore purchased the property with the hopes of introducing her children into the house construction business. This house, built in 1941, borrows its design from a 'California Desert House' built in Carmel a few years earlier. Rendered in traditional materials, this modern style merges comfortably with the rustic British Arts and Crafts tradition of most Deer Lake houses. Unusual for being built during wartime date, it was built at a time when domestic construction was severely curtailed due to shortages of labour and material. It is now owned by the City of Burnaby and is part of the Deer Lake Park Heritage Precinct. The Moore House is significant as a testament to Deer Lake's continued popularity as a residential neighbourhood in the 1940s. Although Burnaby was serviced by a number of transportation links at the time, the increasing availability of automobiles provided improved access to outlying suburbs. Rising real estate prices in Vancouver and New Westminster attracted residents to this neighbourhood because of its relative affordability, central location and beautiful scenery.

- History
- Elmer Wilson Martin (1909-1973) was a professional engineer who lived most of his life in Burnaby. He was born in Treesbank Manitoba to William Henry Martin and Bethia “Bertie” Snell. Elmer married Ellen "Reta" Renetta Boyd (1908-1984) in approx. 1930. The couple moved to Burnaby in 1931 and Elmer graduated from UBC. Following his graduation from UBC, he spent two years at the University of Saskatchewan doing research. From 1936-1937 he worked at the Port Alice mill of the B.C. Pulp and paper Co and later worked for the Boeing aircraft plant at Vancouver. He joined the RCAF in September 1939, serving as chief engineering officer at various Canadian and overseas stations during WWII, until being discharged as a pilot and wing commander in November 1945. He served as NHA assistant regional engineer for a year after his discharge before becoming the owner and operator of Martin Auto Villa at 6574 East Hastings Street in North Burnaby. He was a director of the Burnaby Board of Trade from 1951 and chairman of the Burnaby Industrial Development Board and a member of the Professional Engineers' Association. He ran for Reeve under the Non-Partisan Association in Burnaby's municipal election in 1959 and donated land on Burnaby Mountain for Simon Fraser University. He had many businesses throughout his life including Paneloc Marketing Ltd. and his last one was as Director with the construction company Webb & Knapp Canada Ltd. The couple lived at various locations in Burnaby including, 6574 East Hastings Street eventually settling at 7231 Sutliff Street in North Burnaby in 1957. Elmer's brother, Wilbert Maurice Martin (1907-1980) was also born in Treesbank, Manitoba. Wilbert "Bert" was married to Eva (nee Erhart) Martin (1911-1993). Wilbert and Eva Martin lived on Winch Street in Burnaby. They first lived at 6776 Winch Street before relocating their house to 6656 Winch Street, Burnaby. Wilbert worked in construction as a building contractor and Eva worked as a hostess in the hotel industry. Paneloc buildings were developed by Elmer W. Martin, president of Paneloc Manufacturing Ltd. beginning in 1957 and were based on a design by A.B. Wenaus and Sons Ltd. In 1964, Martin held patents for his design of paneloc buildings in thirty six countries. Since Martin trained as a mechanical engineer, he developed a plan for his home model over a six year period in series of experiments with materials, styles, methods and sizes. Paneloc homes were prefabricated, using specially built bevelled wall panels cut-pie segments to form both the roof and the floor. The wall panels were designed to squeeze together by two metal straps on a turn-buckle basis. The roof and floor were held in place with factory-installed tap block bolts and a long wooden spine which fit in a keyway between the sections. The prefabricated parts were insulated and built with door and window allowances at Harrigan Industries Ltd. in Vancouver where Martin was part owner. Epoxy resin allowed the panels to be assembled without nails using weather-proofed five ply plywood. Sizes of homes varied using four by eight foot wall panels and increasing the span of the floor and roof sections. Harrigan Industries Ltd. continued to sell the prefabricated paneloc buildings until it went into receivership in late 1974.

- History
- Burnaby’s first municipal archive officially opened on November 10, 2001, and is located in the McGill Branch Public Library at 4595 Albert Street. The City Archives functions as a branch of the Office of the City Clerk and operates as the official repository of Burnaby’s municipal records, containing records dating back to Burnaby’s incorporation in 1892. In 2007, the City of Burnaby Archives expanded its collection mandate to include private as well as public records. Types of records held at the Archives include City Records (Council minutes and reports, bylaws, departmental records and photographs) and records from private individuals and community organizations (correspondence, reports, minutes, photographs, moving images and sound recordings). The Archives storage area is equipped with the sophisticated environmental controls necessary to preserve Burnaby’s unique archival material into the future. The mandate of the City of Burnaby Archives is to identify, acquire, preserve and make accessible archival material in the form of civic and private records documenting the history of the City of Burnaby.

- Douglas Stewart (1886-1976) was born in Kirkintilloch, Scotland and began working as a butcher at age twelve years. In 1905, at age nineteen years, Douglas immigrated to Canada, first settling in Calgary, Alberta. While in Alberta, John was employed with Burns Meat abattoir, feeding cattle on cattle cars which helped pay his way to Vancouver. Douglas married Jessie Reekie (1888-1975) who was also born in Scotland and the couple had three children, Annie Stewart Shore, Douglas William and Robert Malcolm who were all born in Vancouver. After arriving in Vancouver around 1913, Douglas worked at various meat markets as a butcher. In January 1925, Douglas opened a meat market which he named Thistle Meat Market (also known as Thistle Meats) located near the corner of Kingsway and Cassie Street in Burnaby. The family continued to live in South Vancouver until 1926 when they moved to Burnaby, first residing at 4022 Kingsway with the shop located at 4020 Kingsway. Over the years, Douglas owned buildings with addresses located between 4018 and 4032 Kingsway in Burnaby renting them out as businesses with some residences above. Between 1927 and 1935, Thistle Meats relocated to 4018 Kingsway and between 1927 and 1935 the family relocated their residence to 4020 Kingsway, above a business that was located next door to the shop. Between 1936 and 1953 Thistle Meats relocated to 4028 Kingsway and between 1936 and 1951, Douglas and Jessie relocated their residence to 4030 Kingsway. In 1951, Douglas retired, sold the buildings that he owned along Kingsway and moved to Grafton Street, Burnaby with his wife Jessie. Thistle meats continued to operate at 4028 Kingsway until 1958 and from 1959-1960, it operated at 4534 Kingsway. After Douglas Stewart retired in 1951, H.W. Silzer managed Thistle Meat Market until 1960. Douglas Stewart was a Mason with St. James Lodge No 80 and lifetime member of Kilwinning Lodge No. 29, Kirkintilloch, Scotland. Douglas Stewart died in Burnaby at the age of 91 years and his wife, Jessie died at the age of 87 years.

All were staff members of the store, which was one of the earliest businesses in Burnaby. This store burned down in 1913, and a second one was built on Keefer Road (now McKay Avenue).

- Track 2: This portion of the recording pertains to the earning and spending of money, household living arrangements, friends, and recreational activities. Bob describes his small businesses, and how he spent the money he earned. He shares his perspective that the self-sufficiency and practicality of the people he knew at the time had their origin in the community’s experiences of the First World War. Bob discusses his family’s living arrangements, and how they moved as circumstances required, although they always remained in the same area. Bob recalls his school sporting activities, and the Army Cadets organized in his high school during World War II. He talks of his friends and how they played in the bush, at the millponds, and on Still Creek, and how they could skate on the frozen creek to Burnaby Lake. He describes the hunting and fishing, and the field and water trials for retrievers in the marsh.

He and Cice had two children in 1948 and 1950, and three more in the later nineteen-fifties. By this time, Dennis had retrained as an accountant and worked in several large businesses in Vancouver. In their later years, both Dennis and Cice were active in the restoration of the Parker Carousel and Interurban 1223 (now on display at the Burnaby Village Museum) and both were honoured independently with “Citizen of the Year” awards. Cice (Chandler) Brown was, additionally, Honourary Reeve of the Burnaby Village Museum.
